I know this conversion is covered in great depth and detail, but my problem is different and can not be solved in backlogs or archives. I have everything I need for this conversion except for the few little parts that are not from an FJ or GSXR. I need the brake stay bolt that goes through the lower foot peg. It's a 70mm long 8X1.25mm Grade 8 bolt. I also need the associated nuts and washers. I also need the 2 stainless steel 4mm thick washers for spacers.
Here's the EXCITING part. After 4 hours of searching (and years searching for similar things) I can not find these parts in Brooklyn, NY. Hardware stores don't have them, auto parts stores don't have them, motorcycle shops don't have them, auto shops don't have them, Indian Larry motorcycles doesn't have them.
Can anyone help me? Please think NYC, I DO NOT HAVE A CAR AND CAN NOT GET ACCESS TO ONE! That means I need a place that is less then an hour walk from the subway.
If you think you know a place stop and consider, do they sell to the public? Do they sell in small quantities? Do they have a minimum charge? Because to tell you the truth I did find a place here that has the bolt, but I have to buy a $50 box of 100. And Home Depot has a lot on their web page but doesn't stock jack here in NYC.
My GSXR wheel has a good tire, my FJ tire has a lag bolt in it. I have to do this conversion to ride my bike at all.
Thanks for any help.
Hi David,
Readily available at Ace hardware here is SoCal. Do they have Ace up in NYC?
If not, ping me back with what you need, I'll round the parts up for you and send them on.
Regards,
CraigO
PS: just did a search for Ace Hardware up your way and the place is filthy with them:

Oh, and David,
That bolt does not have to be grade 8, you can go to a higher number grade. I have a grade 10 in my bike.

I just bought one from a nut and bolt store, odd they don't have a bolt somewhere close

You kinda got to remember it's New York City with mayor Bloomberg. That nut will keep you from buying things like a Slurpee, a 32oz soda or a fag for less than $8 US Dollars. It's crazy nuts up in that neck of the woods.... :diablo:

Ohh sounds like a fun place to live :scratch_one-s_head:
I was born there and, no, NYC is no place to raise a kid. Upstate, not so bad, but better in the New England states. Except Connecticut because they are just as crazy there. :wacko2:

All is good :flag_of_truce: But this guy lives in the land of George Castanza, Ralph Kramden, and Archie Bunker. :wacko2:
As soon as he gets back to me, I'll more than happily help him out. :good:

I bought the bolt from boltdepot.com when I did the conversion.

I might have his phone number in my PM box if you don't already have it.
Wow, thanks for all the replies! As Craig-o said he emailed me and even phoned me! I just returned to the US from teaching in Taiwan and have been running around busy a lot. Usually when I post a question on the forum it doesn't get such quick attention so I didn't check back until now!
Thanks for having my back Monkey! You've helped me out lots of times in the past too!
About Ace. There is a very good Ace hardware near me and it's a local institution even hosting hardware related art shows. The ancient hardware wizards in that store were some of the only people I talked to who knew what a grade 8 bolt is but they said they don't carry them and didn't know where I could find them. Supply and demand, if nobody wants them they won't stock them, especially in a place where property is so expensive that a rat infested studio apartment rents for $2,000 a month.
Irony prize for the Year. That bolt in my FJ back tire is in fact a grade 8 bolt. Unfortunately it's not the right size.
Update on the bolt search. I have a friend in New Jersey who has something I need to pick up. He says we can go around to find the bolts and washers and such. I can take a bus out to him. He's a retired industrial engineer so I think we'll be able to work it out. I'm planning to visit him this Friday. If it doesn't work out I'll be back on here to beg you generous souls who offered to ship the parts to me! Thank you for your offers of help! These motorcycle forums can be really amazing! Especially Craig-o who found my contact information with the help of Randy at RPM who is another kind soul who also has constantly had my back since I bought this broken down bike for $500!
Update on the GSXR conversion. I got a really good deal on the parts from a MC wrecker on Ebay and all the parts were shipped a few months ago but I was teaching english in Taiwan so I couldn't inspect them. After looking through everything I find that the caliper was abused. One of the pads was worn so far that only the metal plate was left and even that was worn through and the piston behind was damaged. I've never seen a caliper in such bad shape. I had to break it in half to get the fluid channels clear. So that caliper needs a complete rebuild. Does anyone know a good place for a 1990 GSXR 750 rear caliper rebuild kit? Does anyone know those pistons well enough to help me figure out if mine can be reused? Does anyone know the torque I need to use when I put that caliper back together? Also I found that the caliper arm (that attaches to the foot peg bolt) was omitted from my shipping parcels so I still need one of those.
So all told I'm further away from riding my bike then I thought. Shame because the weather in NY is amazing right now. Such is life.
Oh, and yea, don't move to NYC. It's a playground for the rich and their children. The rest of us grease the gears.
Ebay is usually a good place for rebuild kits, I just bought a 92 gsxr caliper for $10, ok pads but missing the locating pin, only have about 20 spares  myself. Ill post up the item # he may have others
ok ebay item 310683278872
Great to hear your OK, David. Wow, life sure is an adventure.
Here is a brake caliper that will work and no doubt save you some coin trying to rebuild what you got. Source some cheapo pads on ebay as well and that'll get you through.

I am surprised, nay, shocked that you can't get the hardware you need in the city that never sleeps. I was raised to believe that NYC has the best and worst of everything, including hardware...

David,
Craigo,
Phone directories should have a separate heading for "Nuts and Bolts."
WWW.anywho.com (http://www.anywho.com)
can find people, businesses, and has a reverse look-up feature that can give an address for any published land-line.
In the "Nuts and Bolts" heading for NYC, Anywho says there are a coupla dozen such businesses. Near the engineer's place, there may be more. Click the link below:
http://anywhoyp.yellowpages.com/new-york-ny/nuts-and-bolts?g=New+York%2C+NY&q=Nuts+And+Bolts (http://anywhoyp.yellowpages.com/new-york-ny/nuts-and-bolts?g=New+York%2C+NY&q=Nuts+And+Bolts)
Hope that helps.

+1 on www.boltdepot.com (http://www.boltdepot.com), I've ordered from them before, very hassle free experience.
Are the 4mm thick spacers M20's?
I found these after a quick eBay scan:

or these:

Don't know if they are good enough for the purpose?

I think that is where I bought the SS bolt I used for this same application. I had to buy a hex head bolt. I couldn't find a nice Allen head cap screw bolt that long. If I remember correctly, I think the one I ordered was 90mm long. I've got about a half inch of bolt extra +/-. that's about 12 mm. I think 70 would be cutting it close but if others have done it with a 70 mm then that's All good, just want to let you know that a 90mm will not be too long.
The bolt I used was 75mm long, with a little left over once everything was bolted down
I bought a set of 4mm washers for my GSXR mod; I got fifteen but only need two.
So if any one has problems sourcing 4mm washers, shoot me a PM and you can have them for the cost of shipping.
I live in Sweden, but a parcel to the States is usually not more than $3 in shipping costs.

Oh, and David,
That bolt does not have to be grade 8, you can go to a higher number grade. I have a grade 10 in my bike.
CraigO
I don't think there is a Grade 10 bolt. Unless you mean a Metric 10.9, which is about a US Grade 8.
