Title: i cheated death today
Post by: mst3kguy on April 03, 2013, 11:50:45 AM
rode the fjr in to work today.  i was on a 4 lane highway this a.m., and just in the middle of a long, gentle sweeping right hand curve, a semi on my right that i was riding past decided he needed to be not in my lane, but the lane to my left, two lanes over from him. at apprx 65 mph (seriously, was 28 degrees out, too cold to go faster) his trailer came crashing onto my right hand, the bottom corner of the trailer slicing down onto my hand pinning it down. my shoulder was literally leaned against his trailer as bike and i were leaning into the right hand sweeper, as he was changing lanes to the left, the two vehicles battling for a lane i couldn 't win. his trailer continued to pin and push me, me and bike against trailer, probably 500 feet until i could slow down and he passed. i pulled over, saw the damage to my hand inside my glove, and was pretty sure it was going to be a mangled sinewy mess. he pulled over about 3/4ths mile up on i-275, flashers on for about a minute, and pulled away. had i been 5 feet further up, i would have been in the space between the cab and the trailer, and i would have had nothing to lean against, and i'd not likely be here right now. had i been five feet further back he would have clipped my front tire, sending me into a full-on test mode of my gear. so like i said, the Hand of God came to my aid. i cheated death today. ( :

my injuries?  two nasty gashes on my right hand, about 10 stitches.  a tetanus shot.  heated right hand glove torn and bloodied to shite.  right grip with lots of blood and a little gash on it.  today's a great day!  ( :

Dean, holy shit....from that moment on, you are living on bonus time. I'm glad that you are still with us.
I still want to see you and Klavdy in a foot race...(my money is on you)  Are your feet and legs ok?

I hope you get the driver. Heal well amigo!

Whew!!!! Glad you came out of that pretty much unscathed, all things considered. So the truck didn't wait for you? Isn't that kinda a hit and run?

This is one of the reasons I don't commute on the bike anymore.

Glad you are still amongst the walking.

Wow Mate, What were tha chances? Shit woulda been trumps for me! Got me beat how ya stayed upright - but then again I`ve seen pics of you`re amazing skill. (I still go over those photos in awe...regularly). Better buy a lottery ticket. I`ll send over a coupla bucks with Baldy so I can share the winnings and your luck  :mail1:

....Ummm, actually that`s not a bad idea anyway! - for the first lottery after every Aussie attended, U.S.  Rally.

What`s this about a foot race? Does Monkey wear his flying boots? My money would be on Baldy.  (popcorn)

Nice save Dean. Had you been 6 ft back, you would have got his plate number and that can sometimes be like winning the lotto.
Get a go pro on your head case you meet this multi-wheeled moron again.

i can only imagine the situation.... you want to stand the bike up and get away from the trailer but the trailer has pinned your hand (and the bars) so you couldnt.

quite a feat maintaining control under duress that Deano.

I would always rather be lucky than good but in this case it seems you had both (and the good Lord) on your side.

Kookaloo!

I second that... Think of the stories you can tell later, if you think my thumb looks bad you should seen the truck driver after I was done with him...

Deano, sure glad you survived the encounter. I can't imagine being pinned to a trailer at 65 being pushed left across two lanes. Great riding or good luck either way damn glad your still here brother...

Dean so glad it did not turn out worse. After reading this it's clear the LORD is watching over you today. How long before it heals. Did anybody get a plate number for that truck. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

thx for the kind wishes, folks.  hah,  no way did i get the tag on mr. semi.  i was too busy saying a few "thank you God"s.  and i don't think he knew what he did, but rather stopped when another motorist may have seen it and signaled him.

today was a beautiful day, for sure!

Nice save Dean!  Luck was on your side today.  That and a whole lot of riding skill!  Way to keep your head and ride it out.  Most would have been flattened by that truck.

Glad you're still with us.

Thank God you survived Dean.
You ever read "God is my co-pilot"?

God was with you, there is no doubt, but your riding skills were there when you most needed them, too.

I'm just simply amazed....WOW!

Take care, and heal well, friend!

Someone sure was watching over you, but your instincts no doubt took over your fear in the moment...........Your reactions were perfect, and your experience played a part in your ability to tell us all about it............and maybe a little random luck played a part as well.

Sucks the truck driver didn't check on you.
He/She probably looked back, and saw you were upright, and figured no harm done...........

I'm glad you're still here, and look forward to hearing the story at a future rally campfire........Heal fast!

:empathy2: Oh My F###ing God Father Dean you are one lucky SOB and a dam good rider I would've been a statistic!!
That's the trouble all to often people don't bother to look before turning or changing lanes and in cars its bad enough but when some dim witted tool does it in a truck cause their too busy doing their best impersonations of Smokey and the Bandit on their 2way, cell ph it's especially bad!!   :ireful:

Really glad you are still here to tell us about it another story for the camp fire  :good2:

Thx, peeps.

Pat,

See the dr on Monday to have stitches taken out, but I'm assuming no damage internally, as I have good movement of my thumb and no tingling.  Well, maybe just a little bit when I think of your well-coiffed hair.  That kinda gets me tingly all over...
