hi, ive just purchased a 1990 model, it hasnt arrived yet but im reading that the jap home market bikes are restricted to 100 HP, can anyone shed some light on this? im starting to get worried that it will be a disapointing bike with only 100hp, thanks in advance, ken
Hi Ken.
As far as I am aware the restricted bikes have 28mm id on the intake intake boots on the head side as apposed to unrestricted 32mm intake boots which are easily changed.Theres also a speed limiter in the 180km/h speedo.
this thread may help.

I'm sure theres a few fjers here with better 1st hand info.
Hope this helps.

Hi Ken.
found a bit more info. Not sure if it applies to your bike..

info entered by John Walsh in the UK......
Modifications: bought the bike in july 2001, its a japanese home market import and I did not realise it was restricted till after I had purchased and rode it I realised it didnot have the top end rush normally, IVE GOT ANOTHER FJ1200,also registered on this site so I know how they go. In order to make the bike perform uk spec I had to get another igniter unit as the one on it was retricted to 120 mph or 6000 rpm, if you disconect the speed device in the speedo then the rev limiter kicks in @ 6000rpm so theres no way round it fortunately Ilocated an igniter box for50.00. The next thing was jetting mains and pilots aprox half normal 60.00 from yamaha then inlet rubbers resticted so they were replaced with uk spec. airbox intake half blanked so I cut away the blanking plate. finally exhaust, only 20 mm outlet as opposed 23mm 3xw or 26mm 3cv or 1tx so Idrilled 8 mm holes at rear end of pipes and now have the required performance so anyone out there beware jap imports they are severely restricted.
Cheers :drinks:

it seems like a fair bit of work to de-restict it considering i payed top dollar for a low k's bike, at the moment im considering what to do, ive payed for it but isnt to be transported till sometime on tuesday, thanks again , ken
well i read that again, honestly if the bike was restricted to 120 miles an hour, no worries, but only upto 6000 rpm would not cut it at all im afraid.
Those mods don't sound hard to pull off.
There's a <low mileage> tiger in a cage, you just gotta cut the lock and let it out!

Hi Ken
My 89 is a jap import and happily revs past 6000 rpm
and has past 180 on the odd occasion
So you may have nothing to worry about
just one more sleep aah

:hi: Welcome Ken. Maayte I got 3 FJ `s incl a stock import and it literally flies. (ask Darran) Leave it as is for now, just get it on the road and join us for a latte run. Let us know when ya ready. (The FJ will be the best decision you ever made - Trust me)

finally got the bike complianced today and the engineer mentioned that it was delivered to Europe then imported back to japan, he mentioned that it wasn't unusual for that to happen as some japs didn't want the restricted bike,so there you go its not restricted, getting roadworthy and rego Mon morning , it will be good not having to sneak around the back streets testing it.
Nice mate, you can stop checking your mirrors for red & blue lights all the time
yeah it will make it more enjoyable not worrying about the fuzz, but whats worse is my wifes a registra at a court house and she lets me know what she thinks about riding unregestered, a while back i was giving the rd a thrash around the neighbourhood and she said "i thought you were going to take it easy" she reckons she heard me four blocks away.
another thing that went thru my mind was if this is restricted its quick enough for me,

I have been guilty of this all my life, particularly test driving vehicles I had been working on that were unregistered. I once got caught, and let off, in a Formula 3 on the street.
I always thought I was OK as long as I didn't attract attention to myself (with exception of the F3)
Well those days are well and truly over. I was already aware of the on board equipment some police cars have that automatically scan up to 2,000 rego plates an hour but I got done a while back, test driving a car, by cops in a divvy van having a slow shift. I was legally parked in a quiet suburban back street of an upmarket suburb, nothing suspicious. They told me if things are quiet, they randomly punch in a couple of hundred plates over a shift. "I just got unlucky" (his words) - $700
There's no sport in it any more.
Noel
i remember about 25 years ago listening to a scanner and you could here the cops calling out the rego number and the reply "no interest", a couple of hundred an hour i reckon max, your absolutely right, its no fun anymore, i wonder how many accidents are cause by drivers glued to the speedo?

I reckon speedo watching, particularly on the bike, has just about reached that point here. It has become a hazard in itself. We are world leaders in speed detection, both in number of devices and technology.
With such low tolerances and the very high chance of being caught it has become a distraction.
Whenever I cross the border I feel like a load has been lifted and can just enjoy the ride more knowing I would have to do something way outside the limits (by our standards) to get done.
This is what I use the GPS for most, travelling secondary roads, of which there are many more than main roads.
