I try to buffer away from oncoming traffic because of just this sort of thing. On a typical multi lane road my default position is the right hand wheel track of the left lane (considering we drive on the left hand side here), that would be like you defaulting to the left wheel track of the right lane?... but still, we can only do so much. Once your time is up then it's up.
I think a big airborne car landing right on top of you like that would be a relatively quick and painless end.... at least I hope so.
wow, nothing you can do.
reminds me of riding along and seeing a plastic shopping bag in the road floating around , no matter which way you go it finds you and melts to your header pipes.

Or wraps around your helmet (blocking your view) while you are breaking for traffic that is stopping at a traffic light. One hand on the clutch lever, the other on teh brake lever controlling 80% of my ability to stop, I think my seat still has a razor sharp crease in it. I lost it by flailing my head side to side, I was a Spastic, Break Dancing, Red Power Ranger for a few seconds, must have been a sight for the other drivers.

Something similar happened here in Québec years ago, in that case the victim was riding his bike and got hit by a wheel lost by a truck.
Well, if it's just sheer size, this is the biggest thing I've ever seen on the highway...

It's amazing that in spite of Ll the cultural and language difficulties, differences in sense of humour and everything, there is one universal 'leveller' the ubiquitous dissing of the mother in law!!!

I was riding next to a tractor trailer on the interstate and one of the rear tires blew out like a bomb. I was about 6 feet away from it. It scared the shit out of me....had to pull over and collect the few thoughts left in my head.

I was riding a bicycle south out of Cloverdale CA (Hwy 101 in those days) one time and same thing happened... retread blew off with a huge POW about 10 feet after he passed me and shot across the shoulder right in front of me (~8' of 1" thick rubber and heavy!). I also had to stop and reflect as I was sizing up that big chunk of rubber... one of those times when you realize the Grim Reaper has a pretty big arsenal if he's out to collect you.
BTW - IMHO retreads should be illegal. An Aunt of mine had one blow off a truck as it passed her, smash her front window into the car (and her face, chest. lap... blinding her temporarily), and cause her to run off the roadside into a big drainage and total the car. They're also a huge source of debris on the freeways (big dangerous chunks that will really fuck up your ride if you hit one). At the very least people should stay away from the side of trucks at freeway speeds and pass them quickly when you need to.

And these stupid things. I used this for the first time this week, on the front of a front wheel drive car. I'm sure it would have handled better if I'd duct taped the FJ wheel to it.

Personally, I would have swapped your rear wheel with the flat one on the front and used the doughnut tire on the rear.
...and *STILL* only driven at 10 mph! :shok:

The Police would not allow you to continue driving if pulled over with a bald tyre, you would not get a Roadworthy Certificate if the tread patterns were mismatched but you can legally drive around on one of these things. It is not only skinny but a much smaller diameter and has the grip of wheel barrow tyre and they are called "space saver spares". They are seriously dangerous, especially in the wet.
A standard option on most new cars, at an extra cost, is a normal spare.

Dave, I thought if I discreetly snuck them into the corner of the photo, living outside in the weather, your love of all things Victa might prompt you to rescue them from a life of neglect and offer them a better home, away from the cruelty of the elements.
Come on Dave, make me an offer!
Noel
yeah , they look about as safe wire rope barriers, , think id pay the extra and get a real tyre and wheel, not that i like cars past about 1976
well the spare is an emergency tire just to get you to the tire shop . never intended for sustained use.
it is a 50/50 tire , you can only go 50 mph for 50 miles.
the auto thieves like to use them to put on your car after they strip it and leave it abandoned .
like they did on a z28 I used to have.
