East Coast Spring Rally – who's goin'?
When I made my KOA reservation, there were no Kabins available and no regular tent sites available, which indicates to me that there will be a good turnout...but there's only a handful of folks signed up on the ECSR Info Page at http://www.fjrally.com/11ESR.html. (http://www.fjrally.com/11ESR.html.)
I've got a tent site with shelter and picnic table reserved from Tuesday through Monday; I should arrive late Tuesday*. In my usual anal-retentive manner, I'm mostly packed and the WeeStrom is rarin'to go...although I need to spend some time on it...I haven't ridden much in the last year.
So, post 'em up so we can see who we can look forward to seeing. Or who we'll need to avoid. :)

*...unless I get a job, which could screw up my Rally plans. I'm still unemployed, but I have a promising interview this Friday. If they make me an offer, I'm gonna try to negotiate the time off as a condition of employment. It figures that something like this would happen right when I have plans, but any job is better than *no* job.
Hey Rock, I've been waiting for someone to break the ice with official "Boone is soon" post!
Unless something unexpected happens I'm shooting for Wed-Sun.
I'LL BE THERE!
kookalOOO!
Im planning on being there Thursday evening untill Sunday am.
Eric M
Still on the fence myself. The AMA team takes up a lot of my time (as does that pesky new job) and most of my free time is spent running my suspension business and trying to get ahead of bills from the 2 year layoff...
I may do a fly-by Jon Cain style but there is no way I can get off work. The company I am working for is doing a major expansion and the rally happens to fall right in the middle of the first stage of the move in on 1 of the 2 new facilities.
Joann told me the other day I have a kabin reserved, so I reckon I will be there... :unknown:

rock,
did you make sure to mention you were with the fj group? if you didn't, there won't be any kabins available, because they're holding them all for us. you gotta either mention the fj group, or me, not sure which.
i'm in, tuesday to sunday.
No, I made the reservation on-line so mentioning the FJ group wasn't gonna do me much good. I really only checked Kabin availability on a whim...I got what I initially wanted anyway, a Dee-Luxe Tent Site with electric and a shelter/picnic table.

My plan is to ride down on the FJR on wednesday and leave sunday.
Anyone meeting up on the parkway wednesday?
First ECSR for me since I think 2005? Woo-hoo!!!!
If all goes to plan I'll be there Weds through Friday. Definitely can't stay for the weekend. :dash2:
Hey Chris, I'll be coming in on the parkway Wed too. I haven't heard of any group meet up yet, but I'm up for it. You pick a time/place and we'll see who shows up. In the past it's been Mabry's Mill about lunch, but I'll catch you earlier if you like. and congrats on the homecoming.. it's been a lot of years and a lot of diapers in the making. :)

I should be in Boone Tuesday...I could head up the Blue Ridge on Wednesday for a meet-up; just name the place. :good2:
BTW...the Adventure Rider rally is the same weekend in Linville Falls. Just off the Parkway about 30-40 miles north of Boone:

Duh.

Andrew and I are currently planning on riding up Friday after his last exam. If he can reschedule and take it earlier in the week, though, we could possibly ride up as early as Wednesday afternoon
Rock, hope the interview went well. Being unemployed *sucks.* I missed last year's ECSR because I wasn't sure I could spend the extra $80 on gas. (Also, frankly there were days I wasn't sure I could get out of bed. Did I mention that being unemployed sucks?)
I look forward to seeing all of you guys - and if I time it right, I'll even get to see Stu!

Mabrys Mill? (just north of 58 at Meadows of Dan, Va) It's about 100 miles by parkway from Boone. There's a restaurant there on the parkway and even if it's closed there's gas/food right at the junction of route 58.
Bill,
Interview's tomorrow. Yeah, it sucks being unemployed. It's been slightly over 2 years, and this is my first interview. We'll see how it goes... I felt like I HAD to make the Rally this year - I've missed the past couple of years, and this may well be the last for a while if I don't find employment.
Danny,
Mabry Mill works for me. I'm familiar with the place...it's where Minivan Mommy shoo'ed her kids away from the big, bad, red-boot-wearin' color-coordinated "biker" on the FJ a few years ago. "No, no, honey, y'all stay right over here." Sheesh.
-Rossi-
Rock, you didn't hear the part where she said to the kids, "Now y'all wait here for awhile, mommy has to go talk to that nice man over there with the red shoes.."

Well this is going to me my second spring fj rally that I won't be able to attend. Michelle and I are buying a new home (here in upstate NY) and I just won't have the extra money to make it down to Boone. Plus I still don't have enough vacation time to take. But next year Michelle and I will have more paid vacation time and want to take a weeks vacation and come to the Spring Rally like we did several years back. That was the year Lee from Colorado came to the rally. So I hope everyone has a safe and fun rally and I look forward to all the great pics on the fjrally site.

a reminder to those of you not familiar, do not use the koa website to book a kabin, it will show them all booked up. why? because we have reserved them all, for you to call and mention the fj motorcycle club (or my name), which obviously you can't do when going online. just a suggestion if you're looking for a kabin to rent.
this topic needs to be moved out of general category and into the rally category

I was going to try to make ALL of them this summer, but I'll have to make do with just the weekend at Boone for starters. Work requires(*) me to be in California the two weeks before the ECSR. I'm taking the redeye home Friday morning, Andrew finishes his last exam Friday around lunchtime, and we're riding to Boone with expected ETA around dinner time-ish.
(*)"Too much work" is not a complaint, believe me. Speaking of, Rock, how did the interview go?
New rear tire going on the bike today! I probably could have gotten more miles out of the one that is on it, but why push it and have to change a tire in the middle of the week. AND the dually will have 6 new tires on it as well for this trip. Can next Saturday come quick enough?

Only a week out.. where's the enthusiam? :dance2: I had a rally drought last year, 0-2, really looking forward to seeing everybody.
I was going to try and make it through the ecsr on my current front tire. Looking at it this morning I figure it's probably 80% shot.. Decided milking the last 20% from a $100 tire not worth worrying over on vacation. Also there's the penalty for guessing wrong - half a day wasted at a bike shop and paying full retail + mounting for a new whatever they have in stock that will fit. god forbid - a Harley tire.
New bt-020 supposedly here by Wed. Pack my snorkel, mask, fins then ready to rumble. Can't wait to make a big ass fire and drink some beers in the rain!

Called last week, reportedly got the last cabin of fj availability. Meeting Smola at his place on Wed. Riding in Thurs. MD could not make this trip but I may be bringing a substitute and no MD and I are not separated, contemplating divorce or anything like that (at least I'm not have to check with her though to confirm) the substitute is just a friend of ours that MD mentioned the rally trip to and she was interested so she was invited to join us and then MD found out she couldn't take the time off due to a planned Mexico trip in June but Tamara (the substitute) is still contemplating joining me on the trip. I Just figured I'd put this out there so I will have explain less when I show up with the different lady.

Regardless of whether I can make it, Norton will be staying at home.
He (and his forthcoming brother!) might be coming to Tellico, but that's a long ways off.
Looks like the weather may require a slight change of plans. The original agenda was to depart the Chicago area early Sunday, meander south to Paducah and then head across Kentucky/Tennessee, arriving in Boone on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the weatherman's calling for 80% chance of rain with high winds on Sunday. Now, I have no qualms about riding in the rain...hell, I've ridden through torrential downpours and hailstorms on the way back from Boone, and Barb and I got absolutely nailed on the way back a couple of years ago...but I absolutely *HATE STARTING OUT* in the rain. So I may delay departure until Monday, which could delay my arrival in Boone by a corresponding 24 hours.
Unless I slab it and really haul ass (always an option).
Anyway, I'll see you FFs when I get there. I'm really looking forward to this.

I've totally broken the pre-rally cardinal rule of "don't screw with it".. In the past couple nights I've changed oil, adjusted valves, and mounted new front tire.. Just got back from short shakedown to make sure nothing falls off, leaks, rattles, etc..

I wouldn't dream of it, Klavdy, I know how jealous you get....
The problem would be getting the time off work that week and weekend. (Nice problem to have.) There's a bit of a deadline, and I can hopefully make a case for taking off Friday for the ECSR and avoid doing it as a one-nighter, but I think the first couple weekdays of June are right out. Could ya'll bring sunshine to dry these roads out! Wood is here....2 bundles of firewood and as cold as it is here, we'll need that and more!

Nancy - please tell everyone that I say HI and that I send at least one firework hidden in the campfire! I hope you all stay warm and dry! Ride safe and make the fires BIG!!!

i wonder if people really grasp the context of what a "bundle" of our firewood is. i know that if i didn't know better, i'm picturing a quantity one might stick under their arm and carry to the campsite. you know, a bundle of firewood. ( :

Well, as an example, here's the 2007 ECSR firewood order...
IIRC, we had almost no firewood left to burn on Sunday night.

In 2006, we actually ran out of wood by Sunday night. Feeling bad, I bought a few of the pre-packaged wood from the KOA and had them sent down as I checked out.
They burn some big fires down there. Seriously.
Dan
Maybe we can set something of Klavdy's on fire and rival the ECR fires? If he had kept is old FJ the excess pinecones alone would have alerted the FAA, NASA flight control, and and plenty of covert (Kick ass) anti-terrorists groups. How about a flaming Fez.....? A Fez cannon? The flaming tracer effect could be seen for miles.......Then kick-ass might shut us down........never mind.....Big fire, Koookaloooo.
Dan is here for the night and we will be heading out whenever we get on the bikes. See you all for dinner on Thursday. So happy you are bringing the bike Calvin.     Burn baby Burn :diablo:
made it home. only had one flat tire on the way home. man i need to go to tubeless.
Andrew & I made it home. 105 south to Linville, BRP to 25, we saw an FJ and a Vstrom headed north. Got off the BRP and had lunch near Hendersonville, then superslab all the way home. (25 to I-85 to 400.) Hot - 93 today.
I unloaded the bikes, he's asleep already.
It was great to see all of you again, and thanks for sharing cabins, coffee, cold drinks, and mountain pies.

Got in about an hour ago. No ride home drama.
Great Rally! good seeing everybody.
Just got home. The rehab-d water pump held fine and I had no problems. :yahoo:
Thanks again to Carey, Calvin and Frank for the picnic bench overhaul on the pump.
Battery got a bit wonky at one stop and had to bump start it.
Dan and I rode the parkway up to Mabry Mill and then some really nice back roads in VA. Hit traffic on 95 north of Richmond but was fine as I got off the slab in about ten miles.
It was great to finally get back to a rally and had a blast. Hope its not another five years until I get back down again.
Jeff and I and the rally dawg is still on the road. We just crossed into FL so we are about 2-3 hrs from home still. The truck's overdrive light is flashing on the gear shift knob so that will have to be checked out and fixed pronto!
It was GREAT seeing everyone after the long winter. Thank goodness for my FJ brothers who knows when I ain't "happy" and my FJ ain't happy! Frank, Calvin and Jeff H took the carbs apart and cleaned them. Now my FJ is much happier once again! Which makes me happy too.

Got into Indy an hour ago... bike offloaded, stuff all carried in, trailer dropped off, dog picked up.
Thanks to all for another (very!) successful ECSR!

Definitely an "interesting" evolution.
Just got parts on order from Zanotti's. The mechanical seal is $19. (Woody's wanted $29). Also ordered o-rings, as well as cam chain tensioner, rear pads, crush washers, etc.
Thanks again!

Called and got the damage.
Fine: $10
Court Cost: $175.50
Fact that Tennessee is not a member of the Driver's License Pact: Priceless
Chris,
What were you doing that netted a $10 fine? Doesn't sound very bad.
19E, is that the road running west to southweat out of Shady Valley? Like when headed down to Roan Mountain, the infamous site where the dog backed the truck over Andy's FJ?
Please provide more details.

The infraction was crossing the double yellow while passing cars that were pulling over on the side of the road, with signals on, and kicking out rocks, etc.

hornets nest got kicked and Chris ran right into it.
There was a somewhat dicey double yellow pass on that same car in front of the ranger. Ranger couldn't get to the front man so he had to settle for Chris. kind of a bum rap. Under normal circumstances doubt he would have pulled anyone for the move Chris made.
Well I got back from the ECSR only to be laid off from my one part-time job. oh well gives me more time to devote to my other part-time job and to the horse and FJ.

Without checking a map, for some reason I remember the directions out of Shady Valley as; "91 to 19 to 194"
What's that incredible downhill road where Chris and I got accidently mixed in with the fast group? I want to say 181?
Awesome road! I miss the rallies. :-(
Hopefully the freakin tornadoes will go away and I'll get a few quality miles in Arkansas next week.

it was my stick that rattled the hornets nest. i was in front in a double yellow straightaway, there was a slow car in front, i went to pass, and as soon as i got out into the uncoming traffic lane to pass, the park ranger was coming the opposite direction. of course i was on full throttle to make the pass so i continued around, it wasn't close or anything, but obviously i was observed making a pass on a double yellow. i assumed he saw me do it and kept an eye on my mirrors for the flashing lights but never saw them. i figured he'd have clicked them on right away, which the rest of the group would have then seen and become model citizens, but he didn't. i truly figured he'd swung around and i was just waiting to see the lights to pull over, but didn't, so figured he didn't think it was worth it...
Ah, the master of understatement: "it wasn't close or anything,"
Just enough to piss off a Park Ranger.
I love you Deano, you 'splain things real good.
How come Park Rangers can give you tickets, it doesnt look like a park where the photo is?
Or can they give traffic stuff out wherever?
It's confusing for a visitor, the law enforcement deal in the U.S, bloody hell, even the RSPCA and Postal workers have black & white patrol cars and are armed.
Be a bit embarrassing getting pulled over by a dog catcher,,,

A few new pix up on the photo site.
The trip home absolutely sucked. Monday was windy as hell and no fun, downright dangerous. I gave up mid-afternoon and stopped in Harriman, TN. Stayed over another day because the weather forecasts did not look good. Wednesday, made it back to Southern Illinois and stopped in Marion, IL...where we caught the edge of a tornado (a mile away). Pretty impressive - naturally, me and the other idiots in the motel were standing ouside watching it. Luckily, I had the foresight to prop up/brace the off-kickstand side of the bike. With a tree limb (sorry, no pix). Thursday, proceeded north in the rain and stopped in my home town to see the folks (and get a free meal, and have a short trip home).
All in all, though, a great Rally!
Rossi
How many miles.
