Has anyone had any experience in getting a bike shipped from the UK to US. I would like to get a XJR, but don't have a clue whats envolved with haveing one shipped. My dad had a VW brought back from Germany but that was many moons ago, there were a lot of hoops to jump thru back then.
TIA

you meant to say 2, didn't you!
Until Yamaha certifies the XJR to Federal EPA/DOT standards, USCBP will not let the bike in (i.e. you will not clear customs)
You could ship it to Canada, register it in Canada, insure it in Canada, then drive it across.....for a visit :good:
If you were to collect various parts of a XJR in the UK and import them (as bike parts) I think that would be ok...
I thought I read something recently in my bike mags about Yamaha bringing the XJR to America.
Why would you want to spend $13k on a newer version of your FJ? I would rather spend the money updating my bike to something like Pat has over buying new and pocket some coin to boot. I suspect that Pat's FJ could tear the XJR a new one in all aspects of performance. The FJ looks alot better than the XJR as well.

is a new version of an FJ..
i have had a xjr 1200 1999 then sold it for a xjr 1300 2007 then for a project i brought a fj 1100 .
the fj was a much better bike over all ,so i sold the 2007 and kept the fj1100.
the fj has brought me a better biking experience the both the xjr every did.
don't get me wrong but the xjr are a nice bike but not that great.

that looks a little more expensive than an FJ
At least they put some aftermarket cans on it - here's the factory effort.

I meant in comparison to the XJR. Craigo threw out a $13k number for the XJR plus and a lot of headache to get if even possible at all. Ninja msrp is $10.9k and more in the spirit of the FJ..
Bang for buck, virtually impossible beat a good condition FJ for the prices they go for.
Would the Suzuki GSX1250 be the nearest thing to an FJ currently on the market?

That was Auzzie dollars, not US. I don't know what the exchange rate is right now, but I don't think the US Dollar is that strong to the Australian. Above is the link where I pulled that price from.

Craigo,
The Aussie $ has been at +/- parity with the US $ for about 3 months or so. Today's exchange rate is 1.0015 (pretty close). However, the US prices for other bikes are much lower than the RRP Australian prices. :-(
Cheers,

Craigo....just to illustrate Arnie's point.
A brand new R1 on "special" here in Aus is $17,490. I picked a random Yamaha dealer in the US (Yamaha of Warren OH).....they have the R1 listed at $13,590.
As you can see, even with the Aus$ at parity with the US$, our prices are way over the top.
Harvy
Should we now tell him how expensive tires (tyres) and helmets and gas (petrol) is here? Even after you add the taxes in the US or remove the GST here, the better deal is in the US. (I'd still rather live here, though)

OK then, just to illustrate even more, I paid $140 delivered, for a brand new 170/60-17 Dunlop Roadsmart. What do you guys have to pay for the same tire?

I got a "deal" for a Michelin Pilot Road II 160/60x17 for "only" $250 mounted and balanced with me bringing them my wheel. I think the Dunlop Roadsmart is a bit less expensive.

OK, I think we have got away from the question.
No one has shipped a bike over seas? no one?
I don't want a new bike just a nice used one, don't really care if anyone likes the bike. (this is a fickle crowd)
I like the look of the radian, fazer 700, and the XJR, they all look similar.
And seeing they don't make the FJ anymore. And that I have 3 running FJs and 2 in parts right now, something a little different would be nice.
I also would like a RZ500 but they don't bring that to the states either. I guess I'm old school.

Bob,
I've shipped bikes overseas, but only one TO the US. That was a BSA 500 single sent to Seattle. I have no idea how it was dealt with by US Customs or Seattle DMV.
I also had my Norton Commando 750 (the one in the pic) shipped from Detroit to Australia, and had no problem with Aus Customs, and very little with VICRoads. They did make me put turn signals on it and get it checked for roadworthy, but that was all. And since I had owned it in the US for about 10 years, they didn't charge me any tax to bring it in.
I also sent my RG500 to its new owner in France. The French customs were vicious with him and charged him huge taxes and duties to bring it into France.
BTW I owned the RG for 18years, and still miss it. Magic bike.
If you want to know some "techniques" for bringing large 2-smokes into the US, I can put you in contact with some folks who have done this.
Sorry, I know that none of my info above has helped you with knowing how to bring an XJR into the US.
Arnie
Bob,
Yeah, sorry about going off subject there. Guess we will have to start a new thread about these things.
BTW, I have seen RZ500s and RG500s for sale on occasion here in the US. In fact, there is a RZ500 on ebay right now, but is in Toronto, Canada:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-RZ500-Yamaha-RZ500-RZ-500-1985-RZ-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1e61cb6aabQQitemZ130489739947QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles#ht_816wt_958 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-RZ500-Yamaha-RZ500-RZ-500-1985-RZ-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1e61cb6aabQQitemZ130489739947QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles#ht_816wt_958)
I'll bet that you can get that into the US alot easier than the XJR.
Cheers,
CraigO

Thats what i'm looking for good imput. I'll call the guy in Canada see how low he'll go seems a bit high to me.
Pat had a good idea also, but I would NEED help from someone over seas.
Thanks for they imput, please keep it coming.
Bob W
So Bob,
How did things go with that RZ500 up Canada way? I noticed it didn't sell on Ebay.
Those are cool bikes and if I were a rich man, I'd have one. I always loved the 2 strokes.
Cheers,

I tried to contact him with no response
The way he described it, it needs a little work and was a bit pricey. (maybe they hold their value?) :unknown:
I'll find one some day, maybe I'll have to go with it's little brother those are real cool too.
Ah the bikes of my youth, it was great working at a dealership when I was young and couldn't afford to buy a late model bike. (no peeing, pooping, or raining on my parade )

Bob,
If you are looking for a used XJR in the UK you wouldn't have to look far - currently 135 on Biketrader:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/yamaha/xjr/postcode/g775hr/radius/1501/cc-from/1200cc/quicksearch/true/page/1/sort/locasc (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/yamaha/xjr/postcode/g775hr/radius/1501/cc-from/1200cc/quicksearch/true/page/1/sort/locasc)
I've no idea about exporting.
Stuart
Thanks mz_rider
I have looked over there. But till I figure out how to get it home, it's like pissing in the wind.
Just need to get off my lazy butt (cabin fever) and call some brokers, looks like two may come over.
Please keep ideas coming.
Bob W
not quite what you are after but at least you only have to download it!, oh yes then stick it all together!!

Buying second hand i think is a good option for an xjr. I was recently offered an xjr1200,in Kenny Robert colours for £1100. Im not sure what the shipping costs would be,but,i dont think it would be a fortune?
I left my decision to buy for too long, and the bike sold.
My plan,if id bought it was to junk the bodywork and seat, modify a z1a set of kawasaki bodywork to fit,and have a nice looking, good engined, fat forked, well braked, nicely suspended Kawasaki lookalike.
Less work than building an overpriced kawasaki z1 project.
Probably not to anybody tastes except my own.......
Now I see what you guys mean. It really isn't a very good looking bike.

KOOKALOO!
That model isn't comfortable for long rides.
She also doesn't cast a shadow- that's a warning sign in any relationship.
My thoughts about turning a xjr into a kawasaki lookalike, would for me be fun,to get people looking and then possibly realising its not what they think.
Looks wise,i think (ahem..)the model above would be lovely to have a ride on,and the bikes not bad either...
I was actually looking at an xjr1300 before at the local shops, and with a nice 4-1 exhaust,i thought it looked pretty cool. Hmmm... i fancy looking for one for myself now.
Well back from Germany where I spent the last few weeks working on my Brother In Laws Arabian horse ranch. Here is the link for all you horse lovers out there.
http://www.wagnerarabians.de/ (http://www.wagnerarabians.de/)
I did, however, get into Zwickau to the Yamaha shop to find a XJR1300, which I found as a customer's bike in for service. I was able to sit on it, but not give her a spin. Not that I really wanted to as it was in the 30s Fahrenheit. None the less, the bike felt very top heavy. The bars were high and narrow. Reminded me of the Suzuki 1200 Bandit I had. Except the Suzuki had wider bars and I felt more in the Suzuki than on top, like the XJR. If I had to choose between the 2, I would take the Bandit, hands down. Just my opinion.
I did buy a nice Givi tankbag for 40 euros. Nice bag that'll swallow up a helmet. Or, 3 pairs of jeans, 4 t-shirts and socks along with a heavy sweatshit in the main compartment. Then the sides will hold the camera and cell phone with plenty of room for other small items.
Cheers,
CraigO
