Should we now tell him how expensive tires (tyres) and helmets and gas (petrol) is here?  Even after you add the taxes in the US or remove the GST here, the better deal is in the US.  (I'd still rather live here, though)

Craigo....just to illustrate Arnie's point.

A brand new R1 on "special" here in Aus is $17,490. I picked a random Yamaha dealer in the US (Yamaha of Warren OH).....they have the R1 listed at $13,590.

As you can see, even with the Aus$ at parity with the US$, our prices are way over the top.

OK then, just to illustrate even more, I paid $140 delivered, for a brand new 170/60-17 Dunlop Roadsmart.  What do you guys have to pay for the same tire?

I got a "deal" for a Michelin Pilot Road II 160/60x17 for "only" $250 mounted and balanced with me bringing them my wheel.  I think the Dunlop Roadsmart is a bit less expensive.

OK, I think we have got away from the question.

No one has shipped a bike over seas? no one?

I don't want a new bike just a nice used one, don't really care if anyone likes the bike. (this is a fickle crowd)

I like the look of the radian, fazer 700, and the XJR, they all look similar.

And seeing they don't make the FJ anymore. And that I have 3 running FJs and 2 in parts right now, something a little different would be nice.

I also would like a RZ500 but they don't bring that to the states either. I guess I'm old school.

Bob,

I've shipped bikes overseas, but only one TO the US.  That was a BSA 500 single sent to Seattle.  I have no idea how it was dealt with by US Customs or Seattle DMV.

I also had my Norton Commando 750 (the one in the pic) shipped from Detroit to Australia, and had no problem with Aus Customs, and very little with VICRoads.  They did make me put turn signals on it and get it checked for roadworthy, but that was all.  And since I had owned it in the US for about 10 years, they didn't charge me any tax to bring it in.

I also sent my RG500 to its new owner in France.  The French customs were vicious with him and charged him huge taxes and duties to bring it into France.
BTW  I owned the RG for 18years, and still miss it.  Magic bike.
If you want to know some "techniques" for bringing large 2-smokes into the US, I can put you in contact with some folks who have done this.

Sorry, I know that none of my info above has helped you with knowing how to bring an XJR into the US.

Bob,

Yeah, sorry about going off subject there.  Guess we will have to start a new thread about these things.

BTW, I have seen RZ500s and RG500s for sale on occasion here in the US.  In fact, there is a RZ500 on ebay right now, but is in Toronto, Canada:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-RZ500-Yamaha-RZ500-RZ-500-1985-RZ-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1e61cb6aabQQitemZ130489739947QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles#ht_816wt_958

I'll bet that you can get that into the US alot easier than the XJR.

Cheers,

So Bob,

How did things go with that RZ500 up Canada way?  I noticed it didn't sell on Ebay.

Those are cool bikes and if I were a rich man, I'd have one.  I always loved the 2 strokes.

Cheers,

I tried to contact him with no response

The way he described it, it needs a little work and was a bit pricey. (maybe they hold their value?) :unknown:

I'll find one some day, maybe I'll have to go with it's little brother those are real cool too.

Ah the bikes of my youth, it was great working at a dealership when I was young and couldn't afford to buy a late model bike.  (no peeing, pooping, or raining on my parade )

Has anyone had any experience in getting a bike shipped from the UK to US. I would like to get a XJR, but don't have a clue whats envolved with haveing one shipped. My dad had a VW brought back from Germany but that was many moons ago, there were a lot of hoops to jump thru back then.
TIA
Bob W

Bob,

If you are looking for a used XJR in the UK you wouldn't have to look far - currently 135 on Biketrader:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/yamaha/xjr/postcode/g775hr/radius/1501/cc-from/1200cc/quicksearch/true/page/1/sort/locasc

I've no idea about exporting.

Thanks mz_rider

I have looked over there. But till I figure out how to get it home, it's like pissing in the wind.
Just need to get off my lazy butt (cabin fever) and call some brokers, looks like two may come over.
Please keep ideas coming.

Buying second hand i think is a good option for an xjr. I was recently offered an xjr1200,in Kenny Robert colours for £1100. Im not sure what the shipping costs would be,but,i dont think it would be a fortune?
I left my decision to buy for too long, and the bike sold.
My plan,if id bought it was to junk the bodywork and seat, modify a z1a set of kawasaki bodywork to fit,and have a nice looking, good engined, fat forked, well braked, nicely suspended Kawasaki lookalike.
Less work than building an overpriced kawasaki z1 project.
Probably not to anybody tastes except my own.......

Travis398

Now I see what you guys mean. It really isn't a very good looking bike.

who in their right mind would want to ride that?
