Yesterday was awesome the weather was perfect for a ride.No extra clothes just shorts and a t shirt.Typically i follow the same route  to avoid slow traffic but i picked a new route and right away i see a big Harley in front of me at the light. After turning he snuck away through trafic and pulled ahead about 1/8 mile.Once traffic cleared I took of after him and it didn't take long to catch him and Pull up next to him at the next light.Needless to say when the light changed he took of in a hurry so I had to show him something. My 1100 left him standing still  :rofl2:.Twenty min later I was coming back on the same road when a bad ass Mustang came by at a high rate of speed so once again I lit up the FJ and went flying past him.I slowed down to wait for him and as he was going to pass I lit her up again I wanted to compare acceleration and absolutely crushed the Mustang again.I would guess the mustang had 400 hp it had street slicks on it and sounded bad ass.i had a great ride weather was perfect and crushing the Mustang was priceless.

				Scott,
Tell us that you at least changed out of your flip-flops before that ride.
Have you been following the thread on crashing on the dragon?  Good gear saves skin and pain.
And next time pick on something "quick", neither of your vanquished foes could have been a challenge.
I don't know of anything with 4 wheels (on the street) that can stay with an FJ until you're going Vfast.  But there are a number of other bikes that will not be so accomodating.

No flip flop's and i had my Helmet on.It was a very nice ride and it relieves a lot of stress. :good:

Sorry, but this really gets under my skin.
In general, if you ride a motorcycle, the vast majority of folks will eventually have an off or two, whether it's their fault or not.  Riding in shorts and a T-shirt is just plain reckless.  You run the very real risk, especially racing other vehicles, of making an extremely costly mistake.  Doing so dressed like that will cost you orders of magnitudes more than wearing proper gear.
We've all done reckless things on bikes. The more we do, in terms of severity and frequency, ranks us higher up on the 'squid-scale'.  Riding a motorcycle, racing other vehicles, in shorts and a T-shirt ranks you near the top of that scale, seems to me.
 WEAR YOUR GEAR!

I utterly agree with the idea of should wear gear....
But damnit, it's nice to have the option not to sometimes.
As for the FJ being brutally faster than stuff on the street..... mostly true, but do be careful, you'll get surprised sometimes!  They're great fun at the dragstrip though, bring a strap and lower the rear, get some practice, and go slaughter folks who are on bikes that are waaaaaay faster in theory.  Hobby of mine, y`see.. :)

everyone has the "option" to wear or not wear their gear......but remember this
Pain is real.... and when they are SCRUBBING out the road rash at the hospital you will be experiencing some serious pain in varying levels depending on how badly you get rashed.
that quick jaunt across town might be the trip that catches you out and boy wouldnt you feel stupid laying rashed up in the road with  leather/aerostich/motoport jacket/pants hanging in the closet ?
Kookaloo!

I think riding gear is a good thing and I should invest in some  :dash2: I have raced a handfull of times and never in traffic.I have been hit by a Toyota Tundra at about 50 mph whille on foot and had my leg run over and crushed.Got a busted collar bone at the same time so I know all about pain.I have  Titanium rod in my leg inside the bone from my knee down to my foot and my Right leg is way fater than the Left because it got run over.I made sure that i picked the best available spot to have fun with the Mustang to minimise the risk's.It realy was perfect weather and I had a great ride last night.
Dan whats a Squid ? I dont know.

Thank you sir I thought it was an insult.

				Scott,
I'm impressed you kept your cool when everyone jumped your case about having (reckless) fun. I think they have your interests in mind here though. End of the riding season you can get ridiculous deals on Craigslist and eBay for gear. I mean where shipping costs more than the purchase!

Oh! and by the way Scott,  :praising: (this'll be your mom speaking), make sure you put on clean underwear before you go out, you never know who may have to cut 'em off in the ER....

Scott-
It's really not meant to be an insult, more of a chastisement. We all make compromises and act like squids, to varying degrees and frequencies and severities, from time to time.  It just the higher on that 'scale' we are, the more likely we'll select ourselves out of our gene pools.
For me, it makes me cringe when I see/ hear about someone riding in shorts and a T-shirt, so I said something.  Interestingly, you were wearing your helmet, and were not wearing flip flops, so you have sense enough to see the value there.  Extend that sense to a jacket, gloves over the ankle shoes/ boots, long pant at least, -preferably something with armor, but I must admit, even though I always wear jeans, I don't always wear my armored pants...  Which makes me a squid too I guess...

And good the fuck onya mate, pay no attention to the tut-tutting scolds, wear whatever you feel like.
You are a grown man and they are a bunch of nanny staters.

Say what you will everybody is entitled to there opinion.Or you could come meet me in person and then decide if im a recless idiot or not.I try not to make opinions about other people without meeting them but thats just me.I know I need some gear its getting cold out I also know theres no better way to cool off after a days work in a sweatshop than going for a ride in shorts and a t,shirt.I also think that any one who is afraid to wipe out should be wearing gear because fear will get you hurt imo.So if any of you nay sayers want to come and put some miles on your bike we can go for a ride and then you post your opinion of how I ride or dress and I will be happy to listen.Otherwise I dont realy care what you think go ahead and think what you like.

Next they'll have us wearing fluoro.

I hate having to wear a seatbelt in the car as well,it should be my choice.

I guess I will jump in,seeing as this has become a safety gear thread.I live in a state without a helmet law.But that doesn't really matter to me,I always wear one.I have worn one since I was maybe eight years old.I work at a high performance Harley shop.I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it is true.Maybe ten percent of our customers wear a helmet. In the five years I have worked there we have had a couple customers die in crashes at bicycle speeds. But hey,it was their choice.
Given a choice I will wear as much gear as temp's will allow. But I also adjust my riding style accordingly. But after thirty-five plus years of racing on and off pavement,I don't ride very aggressively on the street.
I'm guessing I have crashed one side or another of a hundred times racing, several at 120+.So far I have only gone down once on the street, and that was on a 175 Kawasaki dirt bike before I had a license.I ended up on some guys lawn while he was gardening ,and I got up and moving before he could yell at me.
I am not afraid of crashing, but I know what it's like,so I work really hard at saving it.

I personally don't get involved in telling other riders what to wear.We all know the risks and can make our own decisions.I do get a little tired of people making the statement that someone isn't a real rider because he of she doesn't wear all the gear.
