Title: Starting problem and fuel pump
Post by: kaalkoejawel on August 24, 2010, 09:28:42 AM
hi guys

so i got my second FJ1200 (the donor for my project) running, and all seems well, the bike runs nice and smooth and is very powerful.

but, when it is hot is stuggles to start. it did stand for a while and i have not tested the battery yet, but when it is cold the motors turns a lot faster when starting. when it is hot it sounds like the battery is flat. has anybody experienced this before?

then, i am looking for a fuel pump for this donor bike. i am currently using the project bike's pump. what other bike's or other types of pump can be used.

cheers!

FUEL PUMPs   Part No      Pressure Range   Max. Flow
  Brand      FED-40104    1.5 – 3.5psi   28 gph
  FEDTRO      FED-40105    2.5 – 4.5psi   30 gph
Sold on Ebay.au by       the_auction_broker  (Philip Island)
* FuelFlo        015        1  -  4psi   23 gph  1.5Lpm
   Repco supplied for A$110.00
Airtex -       ES8016S      2.5-4.5 PSI   30 GPH
5/16" hose barbs   It is a solenoid pump that stops fuel if no power

There are others too.  You need to be able to mount it and get the fuel hoses to and from.
You also want a low pressure pump like those above, not a pump for a fuel injected engine.

Cheers,
Arnie

it also helps to crack the throttle a touch when hot starting.

thanx frank, but it doesn't help if the motor is not turning fast enough to start.

changed the battery , but still no luck - but then again, this battery might be buggered as well!  :scratch_one-s_head:

I had the same problem recently. Started fine when cold but would not crank fast enough to fire when hot. Bump-started easily. I replaced the starter and has been fine since. Regards, Pete.

...thats the whole point of cracking the throttle, so the engine WILL turn fast enough to start. Have you tried it?

OTOH I have a starter here that I would love to sell you  :sarcastic:

bugger! i was hoping it would not be the starter but rather someting simple, like a bad earth connection.

ok, maybe someone should explain to me what exactly "cracking the throttle" means. i don't see how opening the throttle will make the engine turn faster.

how much do you want for the starter?

i just put in a new battery, but no luck. must be either the starter or bad wiring.

Opening the throttle perhaps 1/8 of its total travel when starting.

Allows more air in to the engine, reducing the amount of vacuum that the pistons see, which lowers the resistance to rotation at the starter.

thanks, ill give it a shot.

do all FJ models use the same starter motor?

Take the starter apart, clean and lube the bushings and clean up the contact surfaces with scotchbrite and contact cleaner. A broken hacksaw blade can be used to clean the grooves in the armature surface.  Usually all the starter needs to be good again....

I understand what you are saying. My bike won't start unless I crack the throttle hot or cold. But, wouldn't allowing more air into the cylinders as the engine is cranking also increase the compression, further adding to the resistance, i.e. the pistons pushing against a higher volume vs. pulling a higher vacuum? Just wondering as I sometimes tend to overthink things.  :wacko3:

Thus cracking rather than WOT.  Just to reduce the vacuum in the cylinder, but not create huge amounts of pressure (compression).
