Today I was on my commute home.I had already given the required wave to a mix of four or five motorcycles already when i see a scooter give me the classic left hand low.I laughed in my helmet and didn't return the gesture. But I did have to think about it for the remaining miles home. Was I being a dick?

Well lets think about it? Did you not wave because you were laughing too hard and had to use both hands on the bars for safety?? or did you make a conscious decision not to wave because he was riding a scooter and gave ya the low wave of shame. Seeing as you had already waved at other riders I think it comes down to why you didn't return the mandatory hello fellow rider wave...
All in all it never matters what others think....as long as your not a dick......ROFLMFAO!!!!

IMO The superior rider should always wave first..... even in corners :good2:
scooters get a low wave since i believe they are some of the "bravest" unlicensed people on the road.... willing to dice it up with traffic while riding a motorcycle (and i use that term loosely) that can barely get out of it's own way........ well what can i say. :flag_of_truce: two strokes rule the streets ?
i have seen some hot scooter chicks and they get a horn toot along with a wave :hi:
you can be an asshole...everyone has and needs to exercise that right on occasion.......
just dont be a dick! LMFAO
KOokaloo is kewl !

In all honesty, I am more than willing to initiate a wave to any oncoming sport bike, touring or dual purpose.I am more than willing to respond to any cruiser, custom, or god forbid, a Harley.
The scooter thing just took me by surprise I guess.
Maybe I need to at least put them on my mental respond list to start with.
What sort of scoot we talking about here a 50cc screamer :empathy3: or a say 650 Burgman... :hi:

hmmm i didnt even consider them scooters.... more step thru motorcycles.... and you really cant tell the difference until you are directly beside them.
guess i was talking moped scooter.... you know... the rolling speed bumps.
Kookaloo!
I'll wave at anything with 3 wheels or less. I've even been known to wave at a miata if they have the top down and are driving in a spirited manner on a mountainous road. The surprising part to me, 7 out of 10 will wave back on average. I am not sure if it is just the fun factor of the miata or if there is an unusually high ratio of bikers that also drive miatas... I've associated pilots with being motorcyclists, but they don't usually wave back at anything over 10' agl.
So, wave to the scooters, they are worthy. For every scooter, there is one less cager aiming for us.
I've gotten cranky in my old age.
I wave (first, usually) to anyone wearing a helmet. That simple.
Rules out nearly all scooters, 95% of the HD crowd, and a fair number of fratboys on sportbikes.

unfortunately we have a helmet law here else i would say this plan has a lot of merit. :good2:
Kookaloo!
I wave when I can to whomever. The idiot on the scooter with crocks from a day or two ago took the risk to ride, and paid for it. He/ they deserves a waive.
Every once in a while, when I'm feeling annoyed, when I pass a Pack of Hardleys, I'll do a low subtle wave for the first one or two then if, I get nothing in return, as does happen about 50% of the time, I'll wave like a raving maniac for the rest, just to f with 'em.
Dan
I wave to everybody riding , just to watch them try to take a hand off in the corner without falling off their bike :rofl2:
most wave back, and the scooters I can't tell from the mc these days.

I wave at anyone riding anything with two wheels and a motor.
From the weed eater powered skateboard to the trailer towing touring rigs, I'll wave.
For the record, my family owns 4 scooters. Two Honda Metropolitan II's, One Honda Metropolitan Met "One" and a Honda Ruckus. My kids and I have been riding for a lot longer than it has been legal for them to ride on the streets, we live in a small midwestern town that is VERY scooter friendly. Not a lot of traffic, and a police force that realizes a family doing something together, such as scootering, is a lot better than the families that do nothing together.
In Missouri, scooters under 50cc and "restricted" to less than 30MPH on level ground do not require a motorcycle helmet or licensing - you are supposed to have a valid drivers license. My kids always wear a helmet, as directed by a police officer, probably for hiding their ages as much as protecting them, but whatever -
Curse me all you want, my kids have been riding on the streets since they were around 10. Not one accident, and they are excellent riders. They all started on a old Honda Z50 and we still have it - the scooters are far more applicable to street riding.
We finished a 42 mile scooter ride yesterday, my wife, son and I - along with several others, a "scooter gang" of sorts.
We get waved at on the scooters far more than I do on the motorcycle, they seem to appeal to a wider range of people.
Continued.....
Back to motoracism or moto-snobbery, there are those few people who ride and will look at you while you wave to them but for whatever reason do not wave back.
I figure this is due to a few things.
One, they are newbies or totally insecure and are afraid to ride without both hands on the handlebars. Or it is possible they are in a position that makes them uncomfortable to wave, whatever, they have good intentions.
Secondly, they really did not see my wave for whatever reason. more good intentions.
Finally, they are motoracist or moto-snobs and they can kiss my arse. No good intentions here, no sweat off my back, they're the minority and more than a few of them rank as "toxic people" and I've learned over my half a century on this planet that they are best avoided, not worth my time.
OK - deep breath......
Many times, the "low" wave, it hard to see. Sometimes the people you think are not waving really are. High wave, low wave, open hand, peace sign, the "live long and prosper vulcan thing" - that's nit picking, heck, even a head nod is good enough for me.
Hell, I wave to everybody. I did notice a few things today, on a ride to Wisconsin with about 20 cruiser riders from the Chicago area...mostly Harleys and metric cruisers; I was the only non-cruiser in the group....
1. There's a HELL of a lot more women riding these days.
2. A lot of people riding two-up leave the wave to the passenger.
3. A lot of H-D riders don't even wave to other H-D riders. Not sure what that's about, but whatever...
I waved to a number of scooter pilots...a Zuma, a couple of Ruckuses (Ruckii?), etc. They seemed taken by surprise that someone would wave. :unknown:
More important than the wave is your attitude.
Are these riders of "other" 2-wheeled contrivances, still bikers, or brethren?
And, most important (to me) is, IF/when you see one on the side of the road, do you stop and offer assistance?
Cheers,
Arnie
We don't wave here in Western Australia. We nod.
I won't nod to scooters, hardleys, trail bikers. I used to, but after not getting the expected nod back, have given up.
Sometimes I even confuse pretend hardleys with hardleys, and don't nod at them either.
Are scooters a part of the brotherhood? Only if they elicit respect, eg when a Bergman can keep up with my ZRX1200 in the twisties (and they sometimes can).
Bill.

There's another reason you left out.
It's the "I don't give a fuck about you, you ain't my "Brother" just because you ride a bike" thing.
Wavings retarded, something best left for hayseeds and simpletons.

You see a lot of nodding here in the midwest too.
And when you are driving in the rural areas, almost every driver waves.
The number of 2-wheeled riders who do not wave back is very small around these parts.
That's OK by me!
Waving?
Best left for ill informed Seppo fantasists.
Wild Hoggers.
These gurning, middle aged mongs and neophyte drama queens who will wave across five lanes of the Interstate, feeding their pathetic fantasies of some mythical "Road Brotherhood" , waving like their heads on fire and wasps are attacking them, just WTF are you fools on?
Just because you are on a bike does not make you part of anything, what's next, air kissing?
Waving marks you as a person who drives a bike, not someone who rides one.
Now the nod, the nod is subtle, the cognoscenti know about the nod.
People that do not acknowledge their fellow riders are in the minority in this part of the country.
I hope it stays that way.
My kids, they ride scooters partially because it is all they can "legally" get away with around here.

They are riders, not sure if they wave or not, never noticed.
I have seen riders of every type of motorcycle wave at them.
Good on the youths for riding and their Parents for not letting P.C bullshit get in the way.
Good the fuck on all of them.
Now, back to waving/not waving.
Take into consideration the countries that ride/drive on the correct side of the road, England, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia etc.
Which hand would you suggest they use to wave?
The nod is sufficient acknowledgement.
For someone who endlessly rags on and on about the US sucking, you certainly seem to visit a lot.

I am not sure if I would wave to this guy........but you've got to be pretty masculine to pull off a shirt like that! :sarcastic:

Wait, you mean they don't have throttles on the left?
What if you are the proud owner of a Moped/Scooter AND an FJ1200? Do I need to be nice and wave :bye: when I drive my FJ and then convert to a complete tool :nea: if I drive the Moped?
IMO (as someone mentioned earlier) if you are dumb brave enough to drive a moped at "Mach -5" on the streets, then you deserve a wave. It may be a pitty wave or a signal of some sort, but at least some recognition returned to the person that is on two wheels.

That machine is , in my opinion, cool.
How could you not have a huge smile when riding it?
Lets look at the NOD and how it evolved.
England, New Zealand, Japan, Australia etc drive on the left.
That means when you approach another vehicle, it is on your right hand side.
Bit hard to wave with your right hand, no?
Plus , the above countries are not all touchy feely faggoty like some and don't see the constant need to have their choices validated by strangers.
Just started riding lately I did ride back in 82-83 but just got back in the sabble. It seems that most riders out here either nod or give a low wave,I have been reading this thread and i dont know what I should do know. Most people I see do the left hand wave.I dont see either being mandatory but if you want to then go for it.I am on the water all the time and every one there waves when you go by. :flag_of_truce:

thats why i have a vista cruise on my FJ .... when i'm passing a bunch of harleys i lock the throttle and give them the right hand wave.....
i guess here in America we are a bit better at problem solving eh ? :good2:
To be truthful I had to get used to these gestures again after being off a street bike for maybe the last fifteen years.I got the FJ on the road and running last fall.On it's maiden voyage someone waved and it all came back to me.I don't even notice it happening around me when driving in a car.I don't remember it being so common.I do tend to ride with my left hand off the bars, and sometimes I think it would be easier to just keep waving until the next bike (or scooter) comes towards me.About the time I get my hand back on the bar someone waves again.Maybe there are a lot more bikes on the road than before.

Thanks. I usually have a good smile whenever I ride anything on two wheels. What always gets my attention is the people smiling when they see me on it. It attracts a lot of attention.
