Changing the seal is the easy part, getting the bolt off of the rotor is the hardest part. The replacement seal slips right in after you get the old one out.

Just replaced the crankseal last weekend. Like Randy said, the hardest part was getting the rotor bolt off. I had to use an air gun. Removed the rotor and both pickups(move off to the side) and with small scewdriver and dental pics, I was able to pull the old seal out. Used the old seal as a driver to install new seal. Was actually quite easy. The replacement seal is a bit different than the original seal. It does not have the lip on it, which allows replacing seal without splitting cases. TRoy has a good pic of the two different seals on the yahoo group site. Do a search for crankseals.
Picked up the seal from Randy, and a few tips. Thanks again Randy.. :good2:
Oh ya..drain oil before removing old seal.

It also looks like there is two o-rings in the groove and they also look blue which I believe is the smaller o-ring. There are 2-3 different o-rings & groove depths. If they have the small o-ring(s) in the large o-ring groove it wont seal. The missing flange should not really create an issue as the o-ring seals around the case O.D. & the alt inner I.D.
Some epoxy to repair the flange to ensure the o-ring doesn't slip out of the missing section would be cheap insurance. But since the o-ring is forced to the rear of the groove during installation it should never get to the front or missing section. You need to measure the groove width as I believe the two bolt alternators use the larger/thicker o-ring which is black.
I can get you a part number next week and I might have one of each new and in stock. If not I should have a good used one lying around.

actually there is just one o-ring, i took several pics of this but none of them came out very clear.
I'm sure you probably have seen the broken alternator bolt in the case, on the two bolt alternators?
well that is what i found after i bought the bike and the other bolt was loose enough for the alternator to push it self out a little.
i may have changed the o-ring (not knowing there is different ones) got the broken bolt out and bolted it
back together, i think it was okay for a while. But lately it seems to be leaking more and more oil.
Bob loaned me an alternator for now so I still have a ride, but would like to fix this one if i can.
the alternator seal couldn't really leak that much oil could it?
