Title: Mi Brakes
Post by: homerfj1100 on March 09, 2016, 04:58:47 PM
I finally got down to fixing the crap front brakes on my 84/85 FJ11 and the solution gave me a surprise. 2 finger stopping. I've had some blue spots for a few years and could not be bothered with the expense of a front end swap for FJ12 forks. Hassle and you end up throwing away a set of good forks.
So I found some adapters for a VMax. Still, I bought them but was a wuss. Bought a few yards of braided hose. Guessed the banjo fitments. Really. Guessed. And they fitted. With a few problems that I eventually fixed. Not sure how I post pics but will if you wish. Ta. Tony

Looking polished and cleaned, 2 finger braking means it performs as well as it looks.

Did you check that the disc contacts all of the pad faces? I did a FJ12 front swap using the 4 pot FJ calipers but retaining the 16" wheel and found that I needed Vmax discs which are about 10mm bigger in diam.

It does look like it's only using the outside half of the disc. Looking at the rub marks on the disc.

I'd like to see a straight on photo. From this angle it does not look like the caliper is properly aligned with the rotor and the pads are not getting full engagement. I may simply be an optical illusion, but it sure looks off in this pic.

[edit] After looking at other pics online, one had the note: "You will also need to fit the 298mm flosting discs as fitted '93-'07, (as the original '85-'92 discs are too small)."
How big are the early FJ rotors?    :pardon:

Good catch. Early FJ vented rotors were 282mm OD

Nice, but the brake lines for the anti-dive should be routed on the inside of the fork legs  :good:

These are the ones I fitted. They're working great.

If someone will bring me their early FJ, or at least the entire fork/wheel assembly, and some blue dot calipers, I can machine some proper adaptors in my shop.

I can bring '86 forks and wheel, the Blue dots you will need source on your own. The salvage value of the metal might be worth it...

I don't need blue dot calipers for my bike.  At least, I don't think I do.

Guess I should have said... if someone brings me forks and calipers, I can make adaptors for anyone who needs them.
