Title: BOONE 2015
Post by: Motofun on December 27, 2014, 01:24:20 PM
Can't wait for the new year...already thinking about Boone and 2015.  It's gonna be a close call for me and Nancy due to work but I've already made up my mind that rally beats work hands down.  Probably get there on the 12th or 13th and stay thru Sunday the 17th.

Little Switz has indeed been repaved. It is gloriously smooooooooth now.

...Except for random gravel in the apexes. I don't ever recall gravel on 226a before the repaving job. It was pretty bad on a four-wheel trip mid summer. I was up on the bike in October and there was less of it. So hopefully its all gone before we get there in May.

yea they always build the shoulder up to blacktop level with gravel after paving and it makes a mess for a few months... great news! Sheila never been there yet plus i will have new pilot powers !

Question on the Boone Rally location, is it at the Boone KOA? I need to make some reservations and wasn't sure.
Ill be bringing the XR650 for some dirty riding, Tequila Dan is bringing his DRZ.  Dan and I got together before I came back up North and we had a good day riding trails and powerlines. looking forward to Boone!

Ill be rolling into Boone the 12th, after Boone I am headed west to Cali, shooting for a Rally Trifecta...East-West-Central

If anyone is looking for lodging during the Rally, I've got a DeeLuxe Kabin reserved - it's on the other side of the KOA from Rally Central, but it's got  a microwave, fridge, and a terlet. Reserved for the duration - Tuesday thru Sunday. Room for 2 more - PM me.

Surf report / update on 226A. Conditions are going to be EPIC this year.

I already mentioned how nice it was from a trip up back in Oct. I played hooky today and went back up there. I've never seen such a pristine section of piste outside of F1 track-walks @ IMS and Imola. Its seriously that good.

Even if I can't make the rally proper, y'all let me know what day you're doing the Swizz, and I'll meet ya for lunch.

Well, now you'vever got a couple of Canadians that are going to make the pilgrimage down to Boone for the first time; myself and zwartie. Because May weather can be unpredictable up our way, we will trailer our bikes down (NEVER trailered the bikes before as we've always ridden to our destination). If we get a break with the weather we'll ride down. We rode the Dragon last June.

Planning to arrive the afternoon of the 14th and leave the 18th. Really looking forward to the Rally !

Looks like Boone will be an every other year event, if Im lucky.  I really enjoy the ride down and back with Danny, not to mention riding and shooting the bull around the fire with you knuckleheads.  But this year is a no go.

The wife has started a business and works every weekend.  Still have one kid that cant legally be left alone and the others arent old enough to legally babysit.

Plus my son will be prepping for his black belt test, and that adds to the already busy schedule of sports, scouts, work, etc.

I've just about decided to pull the plug (on working, that is...).  I'm thinking of taking the track bike to Summit Point (WV) on Friday the 8th and working my way down to Boone for the Spring rally.  I may get there as early as the 9th if the stars align.  If not, Monday the 11th or the 12th...latest.
Finally got rid of all the snow a few days ago and took the '89 out for a test ride.  I kinda forgot just how awesome the old FJ's were....135 across the top of red rock mountain.  Now if only the brakes were to work. :rofl2:

Chris, sorry to hear it.  I enjoy that ride too.

I am all but in.  Until recently thought I was screwed due to work but now it's looking good.

My  kwakasaki has been a big POS since about Dec.  Can't figure it out.  Runs like crap.  Surgey at mid rpms, cuts off at idle.  Flashes a code re: vacuum sensor but I've checked and rechecked every vacuum line and replaced the sensor.  checked all the wiring connections, drained the tank, pulled the fuel pump, coils checked, new plugs, every filter..  I'm to the point that even if I figure it out soon it's in real danger of finding itself sitting in somebody elses garage.

If I wanted to deal with a bunch of FI-computer nonsense like this I'd have kept the bmw.  :pardon:

Luckily old trusty-dusty with it's gravity fed carb is sitting in the corner good to go.

dang Danny that sounds just like a wrong vac hose to the sensor. damhik :) put a vac gauge on the hose at the sensor make sure its got hi vac ~ 15 in,  at idle... and low vac when open the throttle.

pillage, then burn

Hey thanks Troy!   I'm pretty sure it's plumbed up right.  Its a twin, and the two throttle bodies only have 3 vac ports between them.  two are plugged (used for synch) and the third goes to this sensor.  Now have new rubber lines, plugs, an ebay'd sensor and the same problem.  I don't have gauges that will measure low pressures like that, but maybe I'll find one and check.  From what I've read on the web, starting to think it might have to do with throttle position sensor.  Have the factory service manual so I'm going to try and test that out this weekend.  all words of wisdom greatly appreciated.  :good:

Me too Frank.. and when this problem first started happening, that evaporative/cannister and plumbing all went.  Ugly, useless and it the way.  Gone now, and my tank vent goes to ground as god intended.. think I'm good there.

Sunday morning - Departing Central IL around 7:30, after a sumptuous Mother's Day breakfast at the Indian Valley Inn. Slabbing it to Harrison, OH, just northwest of Cincinnatti. Boring, boring, boring. And the forecast calls for rain.

Monday - Slabbing it again to London, KY. Still boring, but then on to Kingsport, TN where I'll pick up 421. This is where the fun starts.

Tuesday - 421 all the way to Boone. Right through Shady Valley. Should hit the KOA some time in the afternoon.

KOOOKALOOOOOOOO!!!

I will leave Thursday morning and ride up on the FJ, should get there in time for dinner.  (I was planning to ride up Wednesday, but a work conflict pushed it back a day.  I was also hoping to buy Dave's 998 as seen at Tellico last year, but work conflicts pushed that back at least a month.)

Departed Boone about 8 AM - got poured on for a couple of miles near Johnson City, then rained on again around Corbin, KY for a little while. Nothing serious. Got to Louisville around 4:30.

Awesome Rally. Maybe the best weather we've ever had in Boone; definitely some of the best rides I've ever had. Pics when I finally get home...another 350 miles to go.

I got home about 3p. Nice ride, all back roads, no troubles.  Within an hour of home I came close to a performance award, settled for a warning.

Great time as always..  Possibly some record breaking best weather ever.

I got a couple pics to post later

We're (zwartie and I) sitting having a beer in Dubois, PA after riding just over 600 miles on the way home. We had torrential rain for 20 minutes on 219 creating small silt laden rivers across the tight switch backs. Also did a gravel road while detouring on the blueridge pwy. 219 has some great twisty sections and found a gem in #72 with great pavement and twisties. A long day filled with great roads. We have about another 300 miles to go! Great times at the rally

I had a great time and so happy my family made it up on Saturday.
The weather was amazing and the riding was fantastic. I wish we could do it more often.  :drinks:

Hey Rob I passed you guys yesterday morning around 8a, did you see me?  Highway 18 just west of Sparta, I was headed east.  Waved but didn't realize it was you two until you were basically right beside me.

Good meeting you guys, hope you can come back.  :good2:  have a safe rest of the trip home.

I made it home around 2pm, with hardly a drop of rain until I got to my actual hometown.

Great time, MAN it was great to see everyone.  Andrew and I rode with Rock a bit on Saturday, it has been *years* since I got to do that.

Photos to follow eventually (slow hotel internet.)

Funny, I did see a guy riding a bike like yours but didn't think it would be you Dan. We had a great day today, arriving home at 8:45pm. 2173 miles round trip and worth every bit of it. Got to get back. Soon.

This is how we start fires at the ECR. Thermite? Feh.

You carry that on your FJ? Thermite is instant ignition and packs light, and no need for a power cord...

This is 4 shots of damn hot starting in 5 pounds or less... A pound of molten iron is no match for a pile of fire wood.

That's a good amount of miles in the saddle on the FJ!
