Went over to the west side of Denver after work, to make an appearance at "Old Bike Night" at GB-Fish n Chips......
Chatted with an old Friend for awhile, since when I arrived, He and I were the only ones there..........
We talked about his recent hunting trip, about the upcoming movie "On Any Sunday-The Next Chapter", about the new Kawasaki H2, about Bonneville, and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and electric/hybrid technology in racing applications(2 and 4 wheel)..............
I always enjoy listening to, and sharing stories/knowledge with him...........

By the way, Lee Carkenord says "Hi Everyone"
While we conversed, more and more bikes rolled in.......................including this gorgeous CBX
I've always wanted one of those...............

Lee's FJ still looks good considering the age and mileage (well over 200,000 miles)
Must be the quality maintenance he provides..........................

Excellent report! How often does this "Old Bike Night happen? Looks to be great fun and some good vintage bikes to ogle. My first girlfriend had a Honda Trail 90...That just brought back some great memories! :good2:

Always happens on the 1st Thursday of every month.............................I don't imagine the next 3 will have very good attendance, but you never know.........We could have a very mild winter this year. :good:
Awesome! Wish I could've made it - especially since I can ally got the bike running reliably for the first time since the Bonneville rainout. Just got home from a team banquet for the tall child which was directly after a parent teacher conference for the short child. At least they both went well :drinks:
Is Lee going to make the On Any Sunday showing?
Great post. Love good looking old bikes. Maybe because that's what I grew up riding. Can't stand the look of the new ones with the seat and tail higher than the tank. Your friend looks more like my Hardly buddies. Looking like that he has to own a Hardly but he still has the good taste for an FJ. In the correct colors too! Dave
200 000 miles :shok: That is unreal. Just goes to show how a little maintenance and TLC will keep these bikes going forever.

Funny you should pick this out as a classic, they are the biggest selling motorbike in Australia and the most common two wheel sight on our roads. The postal service uses them all over the country and are universally known as "Postie bikes"
Many events are staged around them from racing to long distance charity rides. I've got one powering a scale car, they are indestructable. Funnily enough, they recently went fuel injected and have been nothing but trouble, long live the carby.

Lee's look is "Mountain Man", not "Harley Rider"
Trust me, he is FJ through and through.....................................He has been an owner since the beginning...........Probably just as long as Pat.
(Not sure who might have bought theirs first :scratch_one-s_head:)
I am not certain, but I don't believe he has ever owned a Harley.................although he does associate with Harley owners from time to time...........and he rides to Sturgis every year (He rides his FJ and camps there)
He is an avid hunter, and I believe he used to race dirt bikes......................
Anyway, there are a few members on here that know him, and wanted to let them know that Lee still exists...... :drinks:

This one was 1977 vintage.......................and you just don't see alot of them in the states..............
Wow what a wonderful collection of old iron. I'd put that meet in the Chamber of Commerce Denver promo's.
Was that 200,000 mi FJ still on its first motor?

Not only is Lee's FJ on it's original engine...................He is on the original clutch!
I'm pretty sure everything is still original except for brakes and tires........................and I think he had one of his original cans rust through, so he sourced a used stock one from someone...................
Pat supplied him with some stainless braided brake lines also. :good2:
He keeps exceptional maintenance on it, and keeps even better record of his ownership/maintenance...................
Awesome report Alan :good2:
what a diverse showing of Bikes for a local event, waaaay cool.
that Hodaka, was it a Wombat?
Scott
Thanks for the report Alan. What a cool gathering! Great pictures.
...and yes, Lee is a special guy. I think he is close to the 300k mile mark of his '84. Over the years I have learned *a lot* from him.
I do wish he would visit here... I miss him.
It's great to see Lee's still around. He's one of the guys I met at my very first FJ Rally. I've always said, "When I grow up, I wanna be just like Lee."

I am not sure what model it was Scott..............I didn't see a name or CC size on it......
The picture that Burns posted looks right...........
Let's go visit him next year after South Dakota.
That almost looks like an Ace 90. My brother had one and it looked almost identical. Big R

Hey Klavdy, we could catch up with Lee on his return ride from Sturgis. Frank and I caught up with him near Douglas Wyoming at Ayers Natural bridge few years ago.

There is free camping there, not a bad place to hang out together for a couple of days.

Hey, both my kids live in Denver - we could drop by and scare the shit out of 'em. Bunch of flatlanders, rednecks, Californicators, and an unpredictable Aussie or two. Could be fun...
Great pics Alan! You need to convince Lee to attend next year's Dakota rally. I'd love another chance to talk with him.

Could be. I don't think there was much difference in the 90 and the 100.
You know the DT-1 Yamaha is often credited as Japan's entry to dirt bikes, but the Hodaka (some US design but mostly Jap) may have the better claim.

Classic indeed...the older I get the more true it seems...
Met him at "Old Bike Night" since the weather wasn't too cold today............
The meetup was a bust..............There were only 4 bikes that showed up.
(2) RD-400s, and (2) FJ-1200s
But, I did get a chance to chat with Lee for a bit, and he is seriously considering the Central Rally...............
I forwarded him the Campground information, and let him know the dates everyone is heading up..............So he will most likely attend..........
I also "Confirmed" exactly how many miles he has on his FJ1100.......................214,000 miles! :yahoo:
Hmmmmm... any others considering the central rally?

Tempted.

Hey Buddy,
I really want to go to this run, it's part of a long planned ride.
Bookings will be made a bit closer to the date.
