From Hastings in East Sussex. New to the site (and fj's). This is my first, I've had it nearly a week. I bought it primarily for commuting each week, but as I don't own a car only a fireblade that's just died it's my main transport for me and my son. It's not done many miles over the past few years and runs lumpy as anything. Hopefully after I have ransacked this site it will be a lot better. Lol. Just need to read loads of carb cleaning threads ;-)
It's a '89 on a G plate
Welcome Mat! I'll be the 1st to tell you: Clean your carbs, change the o-rings under the needle valve seats, get a carb screw kit. I'd tell you to upgrade to #40 pilot jets, but your bike probably has them from original.
RPM Randy http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=24 (http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=24) has them, maybe Doc has them as well (UK FJ owners club). You'll probably do better ordering from Randy, according to folks that have dealt with both. Randy has treated everyone here very good!
Ed
Welcome Mat ! Sounds like you need to clean the carbs when you get a chance. Lots of help and information here. Check out the files section.

Thanks guys. It's my first job this weekend along with new plugs. I'm sure it's only running on three, but I have no choice but to use it. I do a 70 mile commute twice a week. Hopefully it will get me home so I can have a go at the carbs. Does randy deliver to the uk? I will check his site out properly when I get home on my laptop.

Yep, orders head to the UK almost daily.
You might also look at the 30 year anniversary rally coming up in a couple weeks too; http://www.fjfjrbiker.co.uk/index.php?topic=19577.0 (http://www.fjfjrbiker.co.uk/index.php?topic=19577.0)

Thanks randy. I will definitely check that out. I wasn't sure I would like the fj. But once the engine is running sweet I can see it being a keeper and it would be so cool to take the boy to some rallies. How much would those parts Ed mentioned cost posted to the uk. I'm not sure what they are listed as on your site.
Here are the parts recommended below. The pilot jets you select the size required which will be the #40 and the S/S screw & 0-ring kit will take care of everything in the carbs.
Mikuni Fuel Pilot Jet (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Carb%3APilotjet)
FJ11-12/XJ12/XJR13 S/S Screw & O-Ring Carburetor Kit (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=carbkit)

A vaporized victim of the digital thermite!
Ransack away!!, but bring a really big ransack! Tons of info, reviews, tips, and camaraderie here.. Welcome..
Well I have fitted new plugs, run through a good quality carb cleaner mixed in the petrol. It seems to tick over easier and seems more responsive. But it still doesn't pick up revs very well and runs lumpy almost as though it's running on three cylinders. And vibrates just as bad as ever. It's this vibration that really worries me. It's very bad. If you're holding on to the bars it will very soon make your hands tingle, if my heel rests on the frame as well as the pegs. My son feels it through his gloves as a pillion. Obviously the carbs need a good clean but I am waiting untill all the jets and o rings I've ordered from Randy turn up. What I'm wondering is could dirty carbs cause this? When I ran it earlier the engine was not moving at all relative to the frame but the carbs were giving a small jiggle every second or so... Pulsing almost, Is this normal? I seem to remember something about engine mounts seizing up. What would I expect to feel from this? Near side front engine mount (uk).
Sorry for the lengthy and most likely garbled post ;-)

is the #40 for pod and/or airbox filtration?
When you get the kit from Randy and have the carbs off check the files section and sync the carbs..that should help .I'm going to have to do the same with my 86 when i do my carbs..although my vibes aren't as bad as yours
Thanks Redwolf. It's a bit of a relief to hear that unsynced Carbs can cause a vibration. I was worried it might be something in the engine that had given way. I will deffo check on here for cleaning and syncing. I have never done it before. Tried earlier to unscrew the caps on top of the carb but the screws weren't budging. Gonna be fun :-(

Actually, the majority of FJ's benefit from the larger pilot jet regardless of the air filter configuration.
Randy
thanks Randy. I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm thinkin' I need to go this route as well, The bike feels lean on the bottom; it staggers a little at light throttle and pops back every once in a while; both traits are more noticeable with a cold motor and are lessened by a bit of choke. Like I said, feels a tad lean.

...and are lessened by a bit of choke. Like I said, feels a tad lean.
Yep, and since you induce the choke and it runs better, you have confirmed a lean condition.

Should the 40's and O-rings clean that up?

Should the 40's and O-rings clean that up?
Possibly, maybe, could be...
but if the internal orifices of the carbs are clogged slightly, nothing will fix that unless they are ultrasonic cleaned.

I was thinkin' that. If it isn't breaking any rule of the Board could you tell me what you would charge to go through them and what sort of turn-around I'd be looking at?

The current rate of carb rebuilding is $135.00 labor and the minimum of the screw & o-ring kit at $22.00. If other parts are required, they are additional.
Turn around is usually just a couple of days.
Randy - RPM
OMG! I wish you were in the uk I would just drop them off to you for that price!

That is a great deal. All future carb problem questions should be answered "just send 'em to Randy"
