Title: 2015 Central Rally - Black Hills
Post by: Dads_FJ on March 08, 2014, 04:56:21 PM
It's a start, just need the when and where.  August 3rd-9th is the Sturgis Rally, so we'll avoid these dates.  Plenty of KOAs in the area unless there's another idea for camping.

I have never been to South Dakota, so anyone who has please give suggestions. I don't know how warm it gets in the area, Possibly a mid July weekend???

How is this for a location? Rapid City KOA.

Great idea George. :good2: I vote for Deadwood. I am a sucker for historical Old West. Go figure, I live in an old Cow Town.

the devils tower koa is pretty nice, altho you're really out in the middle of nowhere with not much as far as dining choices.  it does have a big campground, waaay larger than boone or the dearly-departed tellico plains.

Count me in for that Rally!
I hope that a good sized group can be rounded up for this one!
It's been a long time since I have been in the western part of S.D.

En route to Alaska last summer we stayed at the Mount Rushmore KOA. Once of the nicest KOAs I've been to in a long time. I believe there are a couple of nice restaurants right on the campground (or is it kampground?).

I'd be in as well....................................After taking the family through this area in a minivan a couple summers ago, I thought to myself, "These roads would be awesome on two wheels!"

I will be heading to Arkansas in about a month and a half to check out the accommodations and some ride routes for this years Central Rally. For the 2015 Central Rally, I will differ to anyone that has knowledge of the Black Hills area.

This is over a year away and I am already looking forward to heading the South Dakota.  :yahoo:

Fred,
Did you get the email regarding the STAR Black Hills Adventure Ride? It's June 7-9 2014. It's a guided ride with a mix of pavement, dirt/ gravel roads and some ATV trails. The ride starts from Rockerville SD and they say seat time per day is 6-7hours. I'm going, I'll post a ride report. Not Exactly a pre-ride for an FJ Ralley but I'm sure I'll learn something of that area that will be beneficial to us.

Lots of talk about rally shirts lately, was thinking of this on the back of the shirt with the fj-tuning fork on the front. But the tab will say 2015...

Thoughts?

The STAR 2014 Rally is in Rapid city first week in June. This is the MSTA annual rally. this is a huge rally they put on with a lot of thought and member input deciding where to have it. Within 100 miles of Rapid City you can reach; Mt.Rushmore, Black Hills, Devils Tower, Sturgis,Visit a decommissioned Minuteman Missile site or stretch out in the badlands... great location!

I'm digging the interest too!  I hope to scout the area out this summer and get some ideas for routes and get a campground dialed in etc... I'm also going to hit some friends up for ideas who make an annual trip to the area.  I've been to one other rally (Gunnison '05) so that's all I have to go on...  What are the typical miles traveled each day?

Not sure what else to ask, I want this to be  :drinks: and  :gamer:  and not   :bad: or :ireful: for all who attend.

I've blocked the time...       :good:

I dunno about the others, but my typical day's ride at the EC FJ rallies goes anywhere from 100-200 miles.

Personally, I tend to favor quality miles over quantity these days.

I'd say between 200- 300 miles per day would be a great plenty.
I'd like to see campgrounds in the Black Hills area, if possible.
Maybe even a trip into Wyoming, too.

I have just returned from the West Coast Rally. In discussions concerning next years West Coast Rally. A mention to possibly piggy back consecutive weekends of the 2015 WCR with the 2015 Central Rally came up.

The West Coast Rally will be held in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is 4-5 hours closer to the Black Hills than previous coastal rallies.

I was asked to see what are the thoughts of moving the Central Rally up 2 weeks and be held on the 5th-7th of June.

There would be an additional 5-10 FJ owners that would leave the West Coast Rally and head straight to the Black Hills for the Central Rally.

If it means more riders will attend I don't see an issue with it.  It's still early enough in the game so this new date still works for me.

For someone running their own business, it's going to be too close to the ECSR.

The ECSR and ECFR are always on my calendar, have been for ten years now.

Having just returned from this years Central Rally, and having an awesome time. :dance2: :yahoo: I know we now have the dates, and general location pinned down for the 2015 Rally. Has there been more thought on a specific base of operations yet?

I have never been to South Dakota. My 2 cents are the Deadwood KOA or the Mt. Rushmore KOA.

I have no idea what the large tourist season is. I am thinking that we may want to pin this down and block a group of cabins/hotel rooms now so we don't come up short later.

From what I've been reading elsewhere, tourist season pretty much runs the usual Memorial Day to Labor Day. However, the earlier you go in the timeframe, the better.

If everyone hasn't thrown their hats (helmets) into the ring for the KOA's that you've mentioned, here's some options for accomodations ranging from low-buck to high-dollar. All were endorsed by riders from various forums who've used them. 4. and 5. have cabins

1. Six rooms only.

Hill City, SD

2. Motel, pool, at-door parking, FREE Mini Golf with room rental!

Hot Springs, SD

3. Unique motel in Custer, SD

http://rocketmotel.com/ (http://rocketmotel.com/)

4. Camping, cabins, resort

Hill City, SD

http://www.crookedcreeksd.com/ (http://www.crookedcreeksd.com/)

5. Historic lodge, cabins, camping...

Interior, SD (70 odd miles SE of Rapid City, but nice and in the Badlands NP)

I have done a bit of looking online, and information gathered from the WCR. Rooms per night cost at less than $90.00. I think the preference is for KOA's that allow campfires. (I believe the Deadwood KOA does not allow campfires). Personally KOA or motel works for me. I really enjoyed The Hub and having a full service restaurant onsite.

My 1st choice.  The Custer KOA cabins are $68.97 for the 1 room cabins and the 2 room cabins are $79.97 and they allow campfires. 7 one room and 9 two room cabins. Double occupancy

2nd choice. http://rocketmotel.com/ (http://rocketmotel.com/)

$89.00 a room This is also in Custer.

For me, a campfire is a must..not a deal breaker but pretty darn important in my book.

Before you book anything check out the Rafters J Bar Ranch.  I've camped there with my family a few times. Nice place with cabins and camp sites. Near Hill City and north of Custer.

Klavdy,

I am hoping that you and Baldy will make it to next years WCR and head east to the Central Rally the following weekend. I missed meeting you both at this years WCR.

Here's the website for Rafter J Bar Ranch.
http://www.rafterj.com/ (http://www.rafterj.com/)

It's a lot nicer than the KOAs I've seen in the Hills.  The Palmer Gulch KOA is crowded and hardly any trees.  They pack the campers in so tight it's like a used car lot.

The Rafter J Bar has a circle of cabins that would be nice to get and lots of tent spaces and then spaces for campers too.

I've camped there with my family 3 different summers, twice in our pop up and once in a basic cabin. Always had a great experience. It's centrally located and like Fred said the rates were always good.
It's been a few years but the website looks like they are still doing well.

!!!Threadjack!!!

To all you 2015 WCR Hopefuls, the arrangement these guys have sounds good to me as well with lots of flexibility on pricing.  I'm also concerned the current place is probably too small and maybe a bit remote.  It looks like 20 rooms and a bunch of RV space http://www.meadowcliff.com/resortmap.html (http://www.meadowcliff.com/resortmap.html), so I think we could not have fit the 2014 WCR in there and we'd need to split the group.  If we'd need to split up, I'd rather find out if we have alternatives...  what do you guys think?

Does anyone know of a campground arrangement up toward Twain Harte (I think) that has a similar range of options for lodging and it pretty big as I recall.  I don't remember the name, but it came up a couple years ago as a rally location maybe.  Or maybe I went there as a scout or ??  Randy - maybe it was your suggestion in the first place?

If we can find something like what the Black Hills Rally have setup, I'd like to hear about it.  One thought would be to move the whole thing to Graegle and ride around in the Sierra Butte...  A nice thing there is you're at altitude and enjoying cool air most of the time.  Ramos - you probably ride up there on occasion?  I think the Graegle area has lodging options we could consider as well.  There's the Gray Eagle Lodge (http://www.grayeaglelodge.com/cabins/ (http://www.grayeaglelodge.com/cabins/)), but that might be getting pricey.

Frank

Pat - you want to move to 2015 WCR?

Looks like Flynt made a good point on holding this where we can all fit, considering a large group coming in from the WCR.

I'm going to the West Coast rally then over to South Dakota afterwards.
In particular, IRON MOUNTAIN ROAD (http://www.ironmountainroad.com/) is intriguing.
Mind you, avoiding times when the herds of Harley slowbeasts  drift across the region is important too.
It's amusing for a while, getting past clots of them, but it gets old fairly quickly.
Wonder why they so often ride under the speed limits in parade formation on open roads?

Hey Klav...

I've been on that pigtail a few years ago in my car...the whole area is quite amazing!  I too am attending the WCR and then heading off to the Black Hills.  Are you riding an FJ from one to the other?  I'm trying to sort out whether to ride the whole bit or build up a trailer to tow it all out there...I would ride the FJ the whole trip with the slightest of excuses...like a fellow FJ rider or two who will log the miles.  Your thoughts?

Of anyone who has done their fair share of riding, who hasn't had to deal with these rolling roadblocks, be it HD's or GW's? Always an issue in scenic areas that are a draw for riders, and cagers alike.

Going early in the morning can help open up the roads for you, but that can be difficult with a bunch of riders. There's always some that can't get rolling quick enough, gotta have a full breakfast, need a cigarette, need gas...

Speaking of roads, does anyone have any opinions of any of these routes in the general area, if they've ridden them?...

There are exceptions. I regularly ride with a workmate on his Goldwing. He is in his early 60's , rides two up and always takes the lead. He sets a very brisk pace and it is always entertaining to watch the sparks fly. I have also known a few HD riders that have no problems keeping up. One guy is an ex motocross champ that just happens to ride Harleys. He has owned one since he was 18 and now has four of them. I feel sorry for the guys that were into that scene before HD became a marketing giant as they cop the same "wanker" label as the gay pirate crowd

I've got a half arsed plan for they are the best laid ones.
Go to America.
Hop on bike in L.A.
Ride to Northern California and the Westy.
Go to South Dakota via Oregon, Washington,Wyoming and Montana.
Take about a month or so doing it.
Consider going back to L.A  via Colorado,Utah etc.

You do have to be careful, as most of the tunnels are one-lane only, and there could be a motorhome in there coming the other way........................ :negative:

My plans will include a trip to see Devils Tower in Wyoming, a blast up into Montana, just to say I have been there, back through Sturgis, and of course the Mt Rushmore trip squeezed in there some where.

John,

I can. I did that design on the CustomInk website. I have spoke to a local t-shirt printer and I can get the price down. I can go back in and have a sample shirt made and then post pricing.

I was in a high-level discussion about this last night.

Thoughts are for me to come in on Friday sometime, do the Rally thing with the FJ brethren , then stay on for a few more days, with this SO coming in on Sunday sometime, and explore, sightsee, and do some back-to-nature things like hiking. Then I ride back, and the SO cages it back.

Reserved my cabin for 5 nights......................I am arriving on the 2nd, and heading back to Denver on Sunday the 7th.
I'll do a couple days of exploring and side trips before the bulk of the members arrive.

The gentleman said that the cabins are already filling up fast, so I suggest if you are planning on reserving one, don't hesitate!
Can't wait to see you all there once again.  :drinks:

Thanks for the reminder fellas!
I just got my cabin reserved.

Alan, we will be there the afternoon/evening on the 2nd of June also, we can finally ride together again!

By the way, I just got my first snow of the year here today that I had to shovel! YUCK!
Crazy to think of making motorcycle reservation at this time of year, but I'm pumped to go anyways!

Hell yeah! I'm looking forward to it...................

We got our first snow this past week, and I got called in to work snow-shift at 2am on Thursday morning..............When I drove in, my Jeep said it was -7F  :shok:
I wasn't prepared for that this early in the season...........
It's been snowing on and off today as well.....I'll probably shovel again in the morning.

Hi all

This is Jamie Simonette also known as son of Dads_FJ.

In reply to FJScott on the topic of offroad riding I would be interested in doing some offroad riding while out in the hills. Is your XR street legal? I have an '06 YZ450F I was thinking of getting a title for and a lighting stator (and a light of course)to be legal on the road. My dad can run a light on his '75 TY250 so he might be in too.

Yes my XR is street legal. would be awesome to have a day exploring offroad. I have some routes that some adventure friends took in that area at last years annual STAR event in Rapid City.

I can't say for sure that I will be road legal by then but if all we were doing was pure trail/dirt riding I would for sure be able to participate. I guess I'm not sure what is available for trail riding in that area.  :unknown:

That would be great George. That would be Dave's cup of tea. He thinks he's fast..but not so much. He is a good rider though. I'll be riding with you guys too. I like to stay out of the lead. I have a problem keeping my inner animal under control.

I have finally converted my first cruiser rider to the Sport-Touring advantages.

My friend Jason who has a Yamaha Star Raider S and had planned to ride the Raider at the rally, purchased a 2003 Yamaha FJR yesterday. It runs very well, but is a bit like how my FJ looked when I got it. Cosmetically challenged. :shok:

I have that same cosmetically challenged problem but I don't let it stop me from riding. I just wear a dark face shield so I don't scare the other drivers.   Dave

Anyone in search of a room?
I may have one bed open in my cabin.
My son had to back out due to vacation scheduling conflicts.

Thank you for the responses, I have made contact with one rider, and looking to PM the other to share with my open cabin vacancies.
At this point, I would like to hold off on any more request until I finalize the two request I currently have.

If any thing should open up, I will be more than happy to help out.

Thanks guys, and I look forward to seeing you all once again.

Here is a very short ride to play tourist and scenic photographer. 56 miles that includes Needles Highway and Mount Rushmore. This also incorporates the wooden loop-over bridges.

Needles HWY 87 and HWY 244 to Mount Rushmore conveniently both basically start at our camp ground.

I stopped by the printers today and am having 2 shirts printed as a trial item. The difference will be on the front. one will have the same emblem that the 30th Anniversary t-shirts have and the other will have the FJowners logo that is on the top left of the web page. The backs will be the same. Currently the shirt colors I am using will be white and light grey. The Mount Rushmore image that is in the South Dakota license plate won't work on dark colored shirts. I am trying to keep the cost below $20.00.

I'd like to see campgrounds in the Black Hills area, if possible.
Maybe even a trip into Wyoming, too.

Leon

Here is an longer ride to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. 244 miles, with the towns of Spearfish and Deadwood included. Ride this one clockwise and stop in Deadwood for a late lunch.

This could be a second ride for the day, 65 miles. It does cover some of the same route as the above route, but covers some more roads to the east.

Fred

I still think red would be a good color it's not really a dark color.  :good2:

Put me down for the double gents. 2012 was an epic run from porterville to gunnison, so I'm keen if I can swing the work thing.
Oooooooooohhhhh yeah

I'd say between 200- 300 miles per day would be a great plenty.
I'd like to see campgrounds in the Black Hills area, if possible.
Maybe even a trip into Wyoming, too.

Leon

Here is an longer ride to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. 244 miles, with the towns of Spearfish and Deadwood included. Ride this one clockwise and stop in Deadwood for a late lunch.

I'm a relatively new member, so I'm coming into this conversation late.  Have any dates been set yet for this rally?  I can probably do it, and perhaps with my significant other.

Two years ago, I hunted Wyoming and did drive near Devil's Tower, and on the way home, went through Mount Rushmore.  The area near Rushmore was as pretty as it gets - windy and beautiful forest.  The actual monument was less... memorable.  :)

Post by: FJ1100mjk on February 14, 2015, 07:46:40 AM
SO is not coming along. Says it's too far to drive back and forth to. Really? I still love her though. Anyways...

I am opening up my cabin to any others who may need a spot to stay at the Rally. I've reserved a four person, non-AC, Comfort Cabin. Reservation is for check-in on Thursday, and check-out on Sunday.

I have been in contact with another member who is north of the US border, who has expressed a desire to share, so there are two spots still open.

I am not a stuffy fuck. If you are a broad-minded type of person, who's had their share of life's ups and downs, and loves riding motorcycles and talking about them (ANY brand, year, or model), then we'll more than likely hit it off.

Those who are legal recipients of Medical Marijuana will not be turned away, BUT your actions with its personal usage are subject to all local and state laws while staying at the Rally, and include those of the Rafter J Bar Ranch http://www.rafterj.com/ (http://www.rafterj.com/) as well. You know that anyways.

I am not a big fan of indoor cigarette smoke, so if you smoke fags or belvederes inside, please refrain from doing so, if staying at the cabin. It may be a moot point anyways if the Rafter J Bar Ranch doesn't permit smoking in the cabins. I never checked into it.

And oh yea, I am known to snore. Just a heads-up.

PM me if interested, and to keep the back-and-forths to a minimum on this topic's posting area.

I just got the proofs from the local t-shirt shop. I asked to have the front logo adjusted a little, otherwise I am pleased with the results.

Price should still be below $20.00. Because of the South Dakota license plate image, Black or red t-shirts would bring the cost up to over $30.00 a shirt.

Thanks Kurt. No trophies or extra hardware, just a cast to wear for 8 weeks. Thankfully it happened on the last day of the rally however, I'm super bummed I'll miss the central rally. Have a great Rally! I'll see you guys again at a future rally.

I am...most sadly...out.  I have some major (but all good) changes going on that I need to be home for and as many ways as I spun routes, dates and times, it just doesn't work.  :negative: This all just came up in the last two weeks and I'm about crushed to not be able attend the Black Hills Rally.  I honestly think this one will go down in FJ history as being epic!  I AM going to make the WCR...but even then, I'm pushing it...but hell, ya gotta ride, right??   :good2:

I will be there in spirit...just imagine the Cap'n sitting at Al's Bar and Grill...swapping stories with Leon...shaking hands with CanDman for the first time...riding the twisties and planning routes with my favorite Canadians...having a glass of wine while catching up with George...having a chat with the K-man about best routes during and after the rally...Lending Steve one of my strippers....asking Garth what we did wrong with the thermite at the WCR...enjoying the old friends and meeting some new folks...who will be my old friends next year.

I only have ONE request:  I don't want a report of ANYone breaking rule #1 and that everyone has a great time.  I suppose that's two requests, but they sort of go together.

I was planning on sleeping with him!  :shok:

All kidding aside, we all know that "Life Happens".
Sometimes plans just don't work out, and new plans are formed.
I had to cancel my Rally plans 2 years ago, when I switched jobs. It all worked out fine, and I'm in a better place.

You loading up early? Are you guys leaving monday?
Title: Re: 2015 Central Rally - Black Hills

Sunday AM.  Arrive hopefully Monday late afternoon.  A bit early but there is no direct route from here to there and being where it is we would like to spend as much time as we can there.  To far for just a two days.  Driving time computes to 17 + hours not counting stops.  So figure 18 to 19 hours on the road one way.
A planned stop in Cody. The guys from the WCR have about the same driving time, perhaps a bit more.

My son stopped by and it was a good time to enlist his help loading the bike.  I did some minor adjustments on the FJ while in the trailer this morning (never stops..).  Also loaded some misc BBQ and camping stuff.  I rounded up 6 misc. chairs.  An odd collection but better than a rock.  Might run across another one or two this Sat. (neighborhood yard sale).

From looking at the weather it is going to be "variable".  Dress warm (Hill City is at 5159') bring rain gear or at least be ready for it.

George

Nicely done!  Hopefully we'll see you there and not on the side of the road along the way.  If I see any FJ parts that fell off I'll pick them up and bring them with  :drinks:
Little change-o-plans for me, I picked up a passenger and am going two-up with my youngest Johnny! (Jamie's still in attendance on his SV650).  We're heading out Thursday AM.

Some states (Kentucky, for one, IIRC) don't require a plate for small trailers.

Minnesota just requires a one time registration sticker that's placed near the tongue.

In Kansas there is no registration or tag required for trailers that have a gross vehicle weight less than 2000 pounds. I got this tag for use when I go out of state. Keeps from being hassled by LEO's of other states.

We pulled out at 6:00 am this morning. The Rally was a huge success. :dance2: Everyone stayed upright :yahoo:, at sometime over the weekend everyone got wet while riding. Some members almost got stranded by the flood that rolled through Hill City. A bunch of Harley's got swept up in the flood. No FJ's were harmed. There is an incredible video that should be posted of the Hill City main street being over run with water.

When we get home this evening I will post a ride report with photos.

I just got home from the rally, a total of 1266 miles round trip on the truck/ trailer and 506 on the FJ for the times we got out to play between the rain storms.

I have tons of pictures and video that I'll post when I get settled in.

Thanks to everyone that attended to make this one rally to remember, I had a blast!

Looking forward to your reports guys.

I love that "Box" trailer! (Don`t they have to be registered?)     :drinks:

It has a (permanent) Arizona registration tag on it.
The plate is mounted on the other side.

I like the "Box" sides on it, cause I can throw a bunch of other stuff in there with the FJ.

"AL's Bar & Grill" requires a lot of gear!  :hi:

Boy, what a great time for me. My first attendance at a FJ Rally.  :yahoo:

It was a real pleasure meeting many of you for the first time, and a few others for the second too.

I had some super riding with a number of you on Friday, going to Devil's Tower Monument in Wyoming. One of my goals of the trip to the Black Hills, and one that was not achieved, was to ride with a number of attendees, but because of a number of things, a rain-out courtesy of Mother Nature on Saturday, did not allow the time to do that. However, I did get to hang with all of you while at the resort.

I stayed on longer to take advantage of dry conditions and ride around, seeing seeing roads and riding routes, that I missed with some of you.

On Monday, I rode back up past Devil's Tower in Wyoming, then up into Montana (just to do it), then back down through Spearfish Canyon Road (stellar road and scenery), and then down the western side of the Black Hills in Wyoming, then over to the east to ride the Wildlife Loop again, then continued north towards the resort, and got a chance to ride the Needles Highway. All told, that day, I rode 450 miles. Quite a few in one day, but I'm pretty sure I saw everything that I didn't get to earlier in the trip, and then some.

Bombed it back home 635 miles in the heat yesterday. Total mileage for the trip: 2,414 miles. Considering approximately 1,270 miles of that was back and forth from Minneapolis to Hill City SD, and some for a side trip to Badlands NP on the way to the Rally, I definitely got some nice riding in  and around the Black Hills region while there.

Very happy that I attended the Rally, and happy to hear that there were no accidents for anyone, and that all returned safely home.  :good2:
