Title: If money wasnt an issue, what are best mirrors to buy for FJ?
Post by: Vsekvsek on August 25, 2013, 11:05:55 AM
I am just about there-lol
I bought some cbr mirrors of fleabay. I didnt realize it but the previous owner had already done this(i asked after the fact). I still dont feel like I can see all that well. I can see past elbows but when I come to a stop light I have zero visability if someone pulls directly behind me. That freaks me out to no end because I was rear-ended in the rain and dont trust anyone anymore.
So....question still stands?

I've no idea what year FJ you are talking about but on my 93 the best mirrors I've tried are the Suzuki Bandit 1250model. I have tried the CBR units witch are an improvement over the stock units but the bandit mirrors are better yet.

What year of bandit mirrors did you use?

Hi Mark.

2007-09 Bandit 1250s part# 56500-38G21 and #56600-38G21.
They come with bases which required just a bit of machining to move the bolt holes to line up with FJ fairing mounts. I used an end mill and slotted the existing holes in the bases to line up with the FJ fairing mounts and used capscrews to mount them. Perhaps you could use the FJ bases but I didn't try that route.

On an 89.

You'll need the FJ bases and you'll need to fab up some angled adapters.  THEN, you'll have some most excellent mirrors.

Hmm. I might need to just go to a machine shop and pay someone to make extenders to bolt my mirrors too. I feel like just a tad extension would do the trick. Previous owner(whos a friend) told me he spent almost $80 for my mirrors now(i thought they seemed decent quality but wasnt sure).
Whats a fair price for one of these to have made at a local machine shop? Or other suggestions?

If you're talking about the angled adapter thingys, I made mine out of some scrap hardwood (Rock Maple)and painted them black. I can't remember what the angle was, but I think it was 15*.  I can get some measurements for you if you want.

I think that the angle is key as I had barely enough adjustment in the mirrors to make them work.  I think they bolt on to the CBR 250,  90*  rotation to how they are bolted onto the FJ mirror mount.

FJ Monkey showed a picture a while back in a similar application where he had a Phillips tip jammed under the mirror base to get the mirror base to angle out.  I think this angle is more crucial than the extension.  Also, I think the newer fairings (91 on??) have a different angle at the mirror base and wold not need this adapter.  What year is your bike? '89  if I recall?

I did not try the mirror without the adapter, but I really don't think it would work -- on the '89 anyway.  There's just barely enough adjustment the way they are with the adapter.

Yeah mine is an 89 and yes was talking about angled adaptors. I was thinking wood but brushed that off as I assumed it would be shaky. Ill have to give that a try though thanks. Gotta love the price

Kind of trailer park but it worked till I made some real adaptors, and 15* is what I used.

I'm going to do up some rear view cameras. One for each side. This winter.

I can't stand not being able to see directly behind, and CBR mirrors didn't work good enough. I added a bar end mirror.  Drilled and tapped the bar end weight and lathed it off flat on the end.  Provides an excellent view directly behind.  Picked up a pair of new-in-the-package Napoleons for less than the retail price of one at the Vintage Motorcycle Days swap meet.  Thought I'd never use them but couldn't pass em up for the price.  Glad I did.  Lots of bar end mirrors available at reasonable prices.

The best mirrors for your 89 are the 86-87 OEM FJ mirrors. If that setup is not wide enough adding 1 inch thick spacers will give you what you need. I have made these spacers for years, they fit lots of older Yamahas. I have a set of FZ1 mirrors on my 89FJ, the adapters would be $200 a set so I've only made 2 sets for my bikes.

Don't you find looking down at bar end mirrors you lose sight of everything else? the traffic around you disappears from your peripheral view?

No worse than looking in the left fairing mirror (I've only got a bar end mirrror on the left). In fact, I can see both mirrors at the same time. The only time I really concentrate on that mirror is in heavy traffic or approaching stops to watch the douche bag behind that's riding my ass after I've made sure I'm clear ahead.  I can't see them in my CBR fairing mirrors when they get that close.

I am surprised, given the title of this thread that Pat C. has not chimed in on his spendy-but-pretty 'sexy Italian Rizoma Radial mirrors (in black) that mounted to [his] bars'.

Per Pat, "They were $$ but worth it. The blue glass optics are beautiful.  The longer mirror arms moved the mirrors out over the hand grips which did 2 things;
1) improved the view, and
2) reduced the buffeting wind noise."

Well said Danny me boyo, but I noticed we were talking about fairing mounted mirrors and mine mount on the handle bars, so I thought I'd sit this one out.

Although, now that you bring it up....Rizoma does have some very nice fairing mounted mirrors, I just can't comment on them with first hand experience.

Their new model even has integral turn signals built into the mirror's body (redundant on the '89)

The entire Rizoma product line is top notch. I also have their LED turn signals which are bitchen.

Cheers

Money no object?

I'd have a set custom made to fit my riding position, and weighted appropriately.

Ran across this RAM mounted mirror, not sure how it'd look on the FJ, but hey form follows function right?

I actually have a pair of those on my duel sport dirt bike. My biggest problem is when you go over bumps(i am talking even small ones) no how hard you clamp down on them they start moving on thier own.

I ordered a set off Ebay. I am going to use the mounts that come with the mirrors and slot them as well. It shouldn't be too hard. I have to anyway because I was a little too aggressive with my OEM mounts and one snapped. I got it to hold for the time being but a better solution is using a mount that is not broken.

Hi cyclenut,

Where can I get an adjustable clutch lever like you have there? Is that a stock master cylinder?

My recommendation for mirrors is a set of Honda CBR250, 7" stem mirrors. They look fantastic, clear glass, and with a little modification to the fairing on my FJ1100, they are great.
For clutch, I put a VFR 800  clutch and brake. Love them. Both are adjusted, and the switch pins are plug and play.

Just buy the real Honda ones, the majority of aftermarket ones are junk....

Sorry, Mattman - it was on the bike when I bought it.  Definitely not stock MC but I have no clue as to it's origin.
After looking at pricing on new adjustable levers, might be cheaper to find a suitable used clutch MC that already has the adjustable lever on it.

How about thinking out of the box and trying one of these ? If I had the spare money it would be on my list.
