Hey guys.
I'm in the middle of the Bering sea so I can't go out in my garage to look at my 92FJ for comparison. I am ordering all parts required for a brake upgrade and I am down to calipers. I want the R1 blue dots but not sure which years are compatible with the 92 forks. Looking at them on eBay, seems like 2 different configurations, triangular shaped and a more rectangular shaped. Just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on the buy now. Thanks
Scott

You're looking for the non radial mount type like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/02-03-YAMAHA-R1-FRONT-BRAKE-CALIPERS-yzf-1000-yzfr1-2002-2003-02-03-yzf-r1-/390632454849?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5af3823ac1&vxp=mtr

The R1 changed to radial mount in 04 or 05.  Do not get the newer style.

Derek

Mid '03 on the R1's Derek, but the early '03 R1's were non-radial gold dots.

Cheers

Scott, anything from an R1 from I think around '98 thru to mid '03 will do the trick. They went to radial mount in mid '03 and they will not fit the FJ legs.

I found lovely gold dot callipers... they comes of from Yamaha FZ8  2012 and looks this same as older blue / gold...

So the question is: will it fit?  :wacko3:

I am not 100% certain that they will work. The FZ-8 has inverted forks, but the calipers do not appear to be radial style calipers like the newer R1's. If you can get them for a good price, go for it. IMO they appear as if they will work.

I do believe that you will have to de-activate your ABS to use these calipers.

I wondered about this as well Fred...  Not that I'm contemplating X-dots, but I knew that there were some different part numbers for the REAR brake system between ABS and non ABS '92 models.  I wondered what the differences were and why.  After a lengthy part-for-part number comparison on ALL brake components, I found the following similarities:

The FRONT calipers are identical between ABS and non-ABS models
The FRONT master cylinder is identical between ABS and non-ABS models
The REAR caliper is identical between ABS and non-ABS models
The REAR rotor is identical between ABS and non-ABS models

I found the following disparities:

The FRONT rotors are different between ABS and non-ABS models at the hub (because the wheel has to accommodate the ABS sensor)
The FRONT and REAR brake line schedule is different between ABS and non-ABS models (to route to and from the ABS pump)
The REAR master cylinder is different, but for the life of me I can't figure out how.  There is a different part number for the MC assembly as well as the rebuild kit, but from outside appearances, they contain the same bits.

Given that the stock front calipers are the same between ABS and non-ABS '92 FJ's, it would seem that there is nothing special about the caliper itself that makes it ABS-worthy.  Same would go for the similarity with the master cylinder.

Would there be some artifact in the ABS performance if one were to just change the calipers without changing the MC (different hydraulic ratios?)?

They are definitely different on the inside. I found that out the hard way several years ago when an ABS member bought the non-abs rebuild kit and he wasn't able to ride for a few weeks while I ordered the correct kit.

On another note, I have blue dots and FJR M/C on my 92 and the ABS still operates.
