anyone ever had it happen without taking anything apart and ripping it? think that I developed an oil leak from it last weekend. not 100% sure yet though

Yes I've seen a few that get damp around there. Even on motors that have never been touched.

This is me fixing a base gasket leak currently.



Top end gasket set, rings and hone.  In my case, a check of the valves after taking the head off showed the seats are a bit crappy and probably not worth putting back together without doing them.
$400-$500 in parts plus labour.

If it's just weeping, live with it.  Mine unfortunately was a full blown leak.

Not an fj, but my gsx base gasket leaked from the day I paid for her , till selling her 9 years later, never weaped any more or less

Yes, it was a problem that Yamaha addressed with the current replacement gasket. It is no longer a paper/fiber gasket which was prone to tearing due to heat cycle expansion/contraction. I was a really big problem on the race cars where we see much higher engine temps.

It also became more of a problem with the larger sleeve/bore of the 1300cc engine and the loss of gasket surface at the block.

The replacement gasket is a steel gasket with a sealant sprayed on each side. These gaskets are almost bullet proof, except for when they get hot enough to melt the sealant from the gasket surface, I have only seen this happen one time.

I will never use a fiber gasket again, only the current steel one; Yamaha Base Gasket, Steel .010

I am currently out of stock awaiting my Yamaha engine order which I hope arrives next week.

It looks like it's out of a tractor or something, and since it probably only makes 16 horsepower, I would put it back where it came from

The irony is that those old engines outlasted my grandfather, and my dad, and will still be around long after I'm gone....and probably my grand kids.

 soooo.... i decided to check and see how tight the head bolts were and they were just barely not to spec. so i re torqued them but i also noticed my valve cover bolts were super loose. tightened them and the leak isnt as leaky. now, before i posted this post origionally, i had tightened the valve cover bolts not to long before that. is there any tricks to keeping them tight? not sure if i want to use locktite on valve cover bolts.......
