Xj750 cdi on Fj1200?

Heh... Not likely, and if so, probably not well--assuming the connector even fits?

That being said, I have seen some crazy CDI swaps work... two cylinder honda dirtbike CDI working fine on a Transalp Vtwin. And the XJ750 was along the same development line and is a Yamaha. I would say it can't hurt to try, but in theory, maybe it could. Probably not much though.

I wouldn't gamble more than $10 on it though; surely it isn't that hard to find a used CDI?

As long as you connect the right wires together, it should work.... An ignition does the same thing on any engine.  Timing advance curves may be different, though... If you csan find an XJ service manual, it should list that info.

I'd try the XJ CDI before I'd try the FJR piece...does the FJR even have a separate CDI?  I'd assume the ignition control is handled by the ECU controlling the fuel injection.

Definaty search the Internet to get an XJ manual to get the wiring specifics and advance curve characteristics. May need to slot the holes in the FJ backing plate for the ignition to adjust timing for any differences.

There are both carbed and FI XJR1200. They switched to FI about I have never seen an XJR in person (in their infinite wisdom Yamaha has never imported them into either North or South America), but from what I'm told, the carbed ones are very similar.

I recognise that name from www.xjbikes.com , The XJR1200 didn't get FI,  but the later XJR1300 did. You're getting the XJR and the FJR mixed up.

I painstakingly put this together from hand by screenshots from multiple pages from a pdf that I found on google. Different ones were taken at different zoom rates. It was tricky because I was on an 11" netbook!
