A 91 FJ12..

And rising through the clocks on after about 1-2minutes runing at idle.., seller said it's because it needs a good run as it's seemingly sat for a few months..........they want £700 (about $1000ish)

It's a 91 with 46000 which isnt alot, but that oily smoke's putting me off, he said he sprayed the engine with oil to stop it rusting ect as it was stored....I've never heard of that before, putting some inside the bores and plug holes yes, but not on the outside.

I was letting it idle for a good few minutes but the seller turned it off, said it just needed a good run....I'm very wary, should i be

Just take for a 15 minute test drive.  If he sprayed it with oil it will have to burn off.

Could also be a leaky valve cover or grommet.  Check on the left side of engine for valve cover.  When they are on side stand oil in head goes to left side and may leak out a bit.  On start up it burns off.

When I was a kid. The first time I heard about fogging oil I was told it was for storing your engine to keep it from rusting. So with a name like fogging oil I ass u med you sprayed it on the outside. Until I  asked my dad and he set me straight.

Maybe this person did not have a dad.  :empathy2:

If it runs good, then it's just a little oil seepage.  The valve cover gasket and bolt grommets are probably probably stock and dry rotted.

I doubt he sprayed the engine with oil.  Sounds like he's just making an excuse.

There nothing catastrophic about a little oil leak (and it probably an easy fix).  Adjust your offer to the seller.  If it's otherwise a nice bike, you could easily be walking away from a gem.

Take a closer look.  Ask him to remove the tank or a side scoop so you can see the top of the head.  If he refuses, then walk because he's a prick.

I know (as in some seepage), I didnt think so either (as in sprayed it with oil.....or maybe he did)....the only thing is, it's only his home phone, there's no mob and i forgot to get it, and I cant be arsed phoning all the time....think I'll leave it though
