Just took my bike out for its maiden voyage with me in the saddle the other day...  Good Times! I was trapped behind slow moving cars through most of the twisty's which was a bit of a drag, but it gave me a chance to become more acquainted with the bike. On the way home I was finally blessed with a nice open stretch of good road & opened her up a bit. Nice, smooth & powerful... When I glanced down at the gauges I was hovering around the 130mph mark or so...  :yahoo:  Then I woke up & realized it was all a dream. As a law abiding citizen I would never go that fast on a public freeway.

Probably just my bike but I find my speedo a little optimistic compaired to the GPS. Like 10 mph off.   Had mine up to 115 by GPS about a week ago and any higher I would have to be tucked in behind the windscreen.. I guess it was windy that day.

Wow! After 10 minutes at that velocity, I'll bet 80mph felt like walking speed.

It was in Montana, (before they restored the speed limit).

Almost EVERYTHING feels like walking speed out there.

On a stretch of autobahn through a valley in Germany in the mid `90's, I took to opportunity to go as fast as I possibly could on my 1990 FJ.

Speedometer indicated ~160 mph, but I suspect that I was more in the 150 mph range.

Glanced in my (vibrating) mirror, and saw a Mercedes STATION WAGON flashing its headlights, quickly approaching from behind!

He blew past me, going 20 to 30 mph faster!

Dammit, it's just NOT FAIR!!! <shaking head>

I've never really looked when holding it wide open for any distance (short distance!) but I have seen 225 on the GPS after a ride.
I have also seen 315 on it!? My son borrowed it to go flying without telling me.

84 3 mph
85 150+ mph
86 110 mph (only had her out twice)
90 140 mph

Im not sure what top speed would be as I was not there yet.I think I saw 140 on the clock in 4th gear.17/38 gearing.

I saw 150 MPH indicated twice. Fuel vapor locked both times - even after removing the rubber flap in the fuel cap. Not sure why. The engine stopped and I coasted to the side of the freeway (Austrian highway), re-started and ran fine after that.

I certainly don't make a habit of pushing it that fast, and I wouldn't recommend it. You can die quickly.

That's true, but as you now know better than most here, you don't need to be going fast or on a bike!

On that run, I was riding between Billing and Bozeman (I-90), cruising along about 80mph when a car came up behind me with about 30-40mph on me.  He blew right on by, and into the distance.

About 30 minutes later, the same scenario occurred, with the same car driving off into the distance.

Shortly thereafter, I pulled off the Interstate for gas and a drink.  About 30 minutes after getting back on the road, I spotted the the same car (again!).  This time, I pinned the throttle as he caught up with me, and held it there as he again passed me and drove off into the distance.  I held it there at an indicated 145 for about 10 minutes, but there was no hope of catching up, as he was completely out of sight.

The car in question, you ask?

A Ford LTDII, like this one:

I have no idea what he had under the hood to push a brick like that through the air that fast, but it obviously had a lot of horsepower.  It may have been the speed, but after I thought about it, I never heard much exhaust noise from it, either.

I had about 75 lbs of gear strapped on the FJ, including a large barrel bag, so not very aerodynamic.  Even without it, there would have been no contest.

Depends on the race.  a moderately worked V8 can have enough HP to push that brick to 180, certainly fast enough to walk away from an FJ at the top end.  -Although to be able to actually drive that fast, in that car, it simply MUST have had front-end/ suspension mods, to be able to actually keep it on the road at those speeds.

But... race that same pig from say, a standing stop to 100mph, and the results will not be the same.  The FJ, or most any other bike really, would be way in fornt of that car...  HP/ weight ratios are a bitch...

Don't think I've ever run the FJ to its max speed..but I have been 220+ on another bike.. I let off the throttle before it ran out of steam..
