Well.......a few weeks ago I had an issue with the carbies on the FJ...... Well, yeah I got the carbies cleaned to a certain extent and had it running really nice un tuned, but with another disaster. The tank HAD being the operative word a magnificent paint job that was done by the PO.it WAS truly magnificent not a chip anywhere or a scratch ...it had quite a bit of fuel in it when I went and cleaned the carbs. So I plugged the fuel line to stop the excess from running out instead of locking the fuel tap, why i dont know still to this day why i did it. maybe because i had a bolt on my and at the time and that stopped the fuel running out when i disconnected it and for some ungodly reason which I am still quite pissed with myself for... I Turned the tank upside down on  lovely soft rags so it wouldn't scratch..... It never leaked all day as i checked it a lot being every 15 minutes for about 6 hours or more..... I had cleaned the carbs put them back together when I noticed a wet mark on the bench. When I lifted the tank, to my horror the paint had orange peeled and the 2 pack clear had sort of lifted and the YAMAHA stickers had peeled............... Yeah, did I scream .....could have heard me the other side of the world......It hadn't leaked all day until, I turned my head enough to not take notice. Guess what?......it leaked....At that point being more than pissed with it I walked away from it and haven't bothered with it since.....?. Its still in bits 3 weeks later.......I'm now contemplating doing away with it altogether... Lost interest in it. A mate of mine cut new stickers for me using the originals as a template but I just can't be bothered anymore.....took the tank and got a quote to repaint it the next day, and because its got a pearl gold stipe which has the tiniest amount of orange peel off it which i suppose i can live with, nobody wants to touch it as the stripe it no longer available and the $ to recreate it is absurd. Got a quote of $500 to repaint it and re sticker it. So now I look at the bike in the shed and , well for the moment. To hell with it. Was looking forward to getting it going but not so certain anymore. It's the little things that piss you off the most. Yes it was my stupidity for doing that. I did stand it on end however it still leaked from the fuel line,so I have no one else to blame but me. I'm contemplating now starting a business to recreate FJ stickers.

Bugger!!! I hate it when that happens. Maybe others have had to re-coat their tank with the gold stripe and have a good solution for you.

Had a similar thing happen to my '93 in 2007 ... I had stored the fuel tank on it's own under my work bench for the winter. Something dripped on it and in the spring there was a large patch of missing paint on top.

I ended up getting a custom paint job for the entire bike.

So, in the end, not so bad  :good:

Oh no :(
Sorry to hear that man, I did pretty much the same thing when I was taking the carbs off of mine. Didnt drain that gas and tilted the tank to take the hoses loose on the petcock and dripped gas all down the front of my tank. The paint isnt good because the PO desided to do a ugly flat black but it still upset me non the less. I have scratched my show car my 1967 Mercury Cougar working on it. Its sucks but thats how things happen sometimes. Sorry about the frustration but I dont think you should give up on your project.

Sickening, isn't it?

This happened several years ago, when my FJ fell over while sitting in a friend's driveway:

It had the Yamaha tank bra on it at the time (and is why I'll never have another one).

Fortunately, my tank bag, which is on almost all the time , covers it nicely.

Looks like some choice bits here including a tank that is nice and shiny. Possibly contact a memberin the UK that could pick this up and ship it to you.

Jeff sucks about the tank. The silver lining is your idea about the FJ graphics. Think this would be awesome. Maybe you can make enough to repaint the tank.

Not sure if 'woodcreekpete' still monitors this list or not, but he had some FJ tank stripes made up once, and was selling them.  It's been a while, but IIRC, he only had them in black.  If you only had a set, you could probably get them copied locally in about any color you wanted.

Mine had something worse than "orange peel",,,, it had "orange paint"

So I rattle-can'd it.

It isn't everyone's "cup of tea", but it works for me.

Jeff, that's really bad luck with the tank.

'Sign A Rama' , sign making franchises, there are quite a few in Melbourne, can do this.
They not only have the stripes to match, they will apply them for a very modest fee. From memory, it was about $40.

I looked into getting a tank done in '93 scheme and they could do the striping no problem.

Sorry to hear about this, but there re plenty of people on the net who will do them, also talk to the general, one of his mates does stickers an will cut all the graphics for the FJ, I thinks he's doing some for Darans new ride

Geez Noel,

40 bucks wow, it cost me 50 just to get two small stickers made up with my boats name, I just imported my new fairing decals from the UK for $50 landed as the local franchises were a total rip off.

you're lucky in Melb

I got a mate who did me the YAMAHA  stickers but he can't do the stripes as they are  chameleon in colour they change in the light. There the original FJ 88-9 ones. If I change them I have do do the lot. I'm thinking of getting silver vi yo and attempting spraying them myself in acyrilic paint with some additives so it flexes. Down side is its a costly experiment
