Air box mod

My air box went on a diet...... It will do until I can get some pods on there.... :yahoo:

as a bit of a noob, what does this mod do?

was the airbox that much of a restriction?

Yes it is, allows the motor to breath better, u can go the  uni pod filter or instead of taking off half the airbox u can drill holes in either end what ever takes your fancy lol

Well the stock box for me was a pain in the ass.

First: it was hard to get the PVC hose hooked up properly. &*^%^%#@

Second: I was never convinced the air filter was up and tight against the air box. The clip/retaining bar to me was a bad design.

Third: it always seemed difficult to get the end panel back on and like I said, I couldn't see/check or inspect that the filter was tight up against the box after the end panel was back on. 

Now I have none of those problems. I can now visually see my filter. When whats left of the side panel is removed the filter is still held in tightly in place by 2 small screws through the filter flange into the box as a back up.

Plenty of room to reattach the PVC hose.  :good2: :good2:

I plan on mounting a replacement fuel pump under the air filter in the newly found open area.  I know that pump will never fail in my warm and dry garage....... When it happens I will have a plan.

Oh and I guess it flows air easier but that wasn't the reason I cut the box.

I will go to uni pods anyhow in the future but this makes me happy for now.

Do you have to rejet for this mod? Because I hate that box and having to line it up with the sub-frame.

No I did not re-jet. The K&N filter (I use the term "filter" very loosly) Had already been installed by the PO. I did "re sync" and adjust the fuel air screws on the carbs after I trimmed the bottom of the box off. My plugs look OK and it seems to run good. Next week I will be able to reevaluate after 7 days on the road and altitudes ranging from 7000 ft (Donner pass) down to almost sea level.

As a note just to be clear during the same time I advanced the timing approx. 4 or 5 degrees. Still seems to run good here at 3000 ft. I am running Standard premium gas and use about 1/2 ounce of StarTron additive in my fuel tank because of the ethanol gas.

My primary reason for cutting the box was for inspection making sure the filter is up tight against the box and sealing also easier to service when required. I was also tired of fighting that PVC line............ I see some value in keeping the PVC connection into the air box as intended from Yamaha. Probably a minor thing but just my preference.

If UniFilter makes a flat filter then I might look into that rather than pods. The K&N while free flowing is probably a little lacking in the "filtering" of undesirable particles. I would not recommend anyone go out and buy a K&N, buts that just my opinion.

For me cutting the box makes things simpler and more reliable at minimal cost. (had to buy a longer hose for the PVC connection, couple of dollars)  :lol:

I may do the same with mine because fighting with that air box is a major pain. My bike has been rejetted for the exhaust and k&n so I think I should be good to go.

Thanks !  :good2: I see Power Sports has them for 20 bucks through Amazon also. The e bay price is about the same. He wants 11.00 to ship. I will order one. It has to be better than a K&N...
