Hey all,

I won a Vance and Hines Timing Advancer on  E-bay about a month ago.  It only cost me $10.50 shipped so I figured what the hey.  Anyways, I finally installed it a couple of days ago, and took the bike out for a ride yesterday, and I must say I was impressed at the improvement it made for such a low cost and simple installation.  Took about 5 minutes to install, biggest issue was keeping the crank from turning while losening the rotor nut.  I just broke out a BFW (monkey wrench) to hold the rotor in place and that was end of that problem.  After that it is a simple plug and play installation.  I really didn't expect much concidering the low cost and simple installation, but the V&H Advancer in combination with the V&H exhuast really seems to work well.  It actually pulls a bit harder all the way around, and revs up a bit quicker. The only thing I noticed so far is it doesn't want go past the red line as easily as it did before, but it pull stronger getting there.  So, I guess I will just have to shift a bit quicker. Now I just need to get the clutch done, which should be by the end of next week.  After that I will get the bike on the dyno.  I had it on the dyno about 2 month ago and it hit 102hp at 6500rpm and then the clutch started to slip.  So, I have be riding the bike easy since then.  But, I can't take it any longer, I need the full rush of adrinaline through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.   :yahoo:

I will post Video when I get the bike on the Dyno again.

Later,    :bye2:

I was wondering since they don't  make these anymore, if we had pictures and measurements on yours, if new ones couldn't be made

Why not just widen the keyway on a stocker?

That would be one option.  But I don't know how well in would stay in place considering the high revelations of the crank.  Another option would be to make it so you could move the points plate.  I don't know, for $11.  I am not complaining.

There is usually one on e-bay for $25.  It is not there right now, but it will come up again.  I just got lucky finding mine so cheap. :i_am_so_happy:

They are a 5 degree advance.  Actually - you can achieve the same exact same effect with the stock advancer and a dremel tool and about 10 minutes.  George Bowers had instructions years ago posted on the Yahoo forum I think.  I'll see if I can find them and post them here.

Did they make these for the 1100's?

Yes, part # 16161.  It is the same as 86-87 FJ1200, but is different than the 89-up.

I have never seen the 84-87 part for sale before, but I am sure they are out there.

I had to click the buy it now, but it arrived 2 days ago. Now if the SNOW would just melt and warm up I could go out and put it on !

I put a pick up in my gallery for those of you that want to see it.

Yesterday was our first nice weather day in a while so I installed the advancer on my bike. It does rev quicker now and it seems like there is just a hair more power. The install was easy but took me about 10 min to get the crank bolt loose, a pipe wrench is your friend to hold the old rotor in place.

Hi there,
I got interested with the "home made" changes to the ignition timing.  Earlier in this post there is a mention that "George Bowers had instructions years ago posted on the Yahoo forum.." Would someone know where I find information about fabricating the original advancer to achieve the 5+ degree?
Factory Pro had a product just like that, part number RTR-YAM-5. I can't find any for love or money; If someone knows where to buy one I am interested :)

Slot the mounting holes for the sensor plate so you can move the plate.  Going opposite the rotation direction of the crank will advance the timing.  Since the crank rotates CCW, you would need to advance the ignition plate CW.

I've performed the slotting of the plate mod , , as randy from rpm said, just file it out to the shadow/edge of the bolt /washer mark
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

Did the same. I went up to around 7 degrees. I noticed down in Calif. at the WCR I was getting some pre ignition... I will turn her back to 5 aprox 5 degree's when she is up and running again.

Anyhow the mod is easy....

Please find an update; I got an ignition plate from a cycle wrecker in Woodstock Ontario to do the modifications. Calculate how much is 5 degrees of a circumference of 92 mm, which is 4mm. Notched the hole 4 mm counter-clock (to the left of the hole), so the plate would rotate clock wise by 4 mm. The engine now purrs nicely, less vibrations, and it pulls from 2500 rpm with no hesitation. I am satisfied with the modification. I have the original plate in case I'd want to return to the original timing. Next, I got to tune the shims....
Thank you all,
Eyal

You could of save some cash mate, and just stotted your original plate, no issues to just spin it back to standard
