Cracked mirror - should have listened.

Many years ago my 3XW mirrors made a buzzing noise and when I took them off the bike and shook them around I found that the weights inside were loose, so I drilled a hole in the bottom of each mirror housing & gently pumped silicone into each until nothing moved around inside.  All good.      That lasted until recently when my mirrors began the buzzing noise again.      This time around I made use of this forum and did a bit of research on what others had done to overcome the buzzing noise.  Many had installed certain CBR600RR, CBR1000RR or their knock-off equivalent but I was happy enough with the 3XW originals and after the research here I figured that I might be able to stop the weights from moving again if I once again pumped some silicone in but after reading Klavdy's comments about not putting too much in there in case the mirror glass cracked or shattered I thought I'd be a bit of a smart arse and use No More Gaps instead of silicone as it was more pliable  Well, guess what?  Yep, you guessed right.  I pumped too much in and the mirror glass did the old snap, crackle and pop.        It's still in place but shattered.   At that very point and many minutes later after letting out many swear words I wished I had listened to Klavdy's warning comments.  Oh well, shit happens.  Now looking for a right side 3XW mirror or perhaps CBR600RR, CBR1000RR or their knock-off equivalent.

No worries mate,, I still have them,  went and checked, but I've kept the mounts on the 88 and fitted cbr mirrors,so if you find out they will work I have them, ,

Listen to Frank. He knows of what he speaks. Even if you have to go back to Yamaha oem, do that.
The Honda oem mirrors are bitchen. The glass and optics are top notch.
The Aftermarket optics are shit. Like looking at aluminum foil trying to see behind you....really.

You have to look up a spares list for your bike, get the part quoted etc, bit of stuffing around but the savings are worth it,

I finally tired of looking at my elbows and twisting my upper body to see behind me and lashed out on some CBR mirrors. I thought I would buy a cheap set to see how they fitted up and make sure I could live with the smaller glass area before committing to a decent pair. I handed over the mighty sum of $18 incl. postage. I rode around with one of each for a few weeks and decided I liked the CBR mirrors.
What I also noticed was the optics when riding were excellent. Sure, if you look hard at them stationary you can see it's not as good as the OEM, but once riding, when you focal point is the image not the glass, I would defy anyone to pick the difference.

I guess I just got lucky.

I resisted the need to upgrade for years but now I have it makes the world of difference.

For anyone wanting to keep the original and have a rattly weight inside. I cut a neat triangular piece out of the bottom, glued the weight back on and stuffed it full of fresh foam then glued the piece back in the bottom. You can't see it when the mirrors are fitted unless the bike is lying on its side or upside down in which case you would probably not be worried about the underside of the mirror.

For me it was mostly the normal vibrations on a '92 (almost none) would cause the mirrors to buzz so badly you couldn't see shit unless the engine wasn't running.  What was really strange was opening the OEM Honda boxes and finding practically identical mirrors to the EMGOs (they're very good knock offs)...  mounting looked identical, stalks, mirror body, but yes the glass is not nearly as nice.

Put them on anyway and viola...  no more buzz.  I can read car license plates behind me while zipping down the freeway now and can't make these mirrors buzz at any RPM.  They were 10X the cost (my Emgos were $20 or so), but seeing just one LEO behind me makes them good insurance...  and they have paid off repeatedly this way (I should probably slow down a bit).

This drives me crazy. What could possibly be the difference between the OEM's and Emgo's that causes one set to buzz and the other to not? Is it a fancy-measurement on the weight? Does nicer glass not vibrate? Or is it better foam inside?

I feel like surely it should be possible to mod the EMGO's to not vibrate.

Noel, I might be willing to pay for postage for your old ones. I hate my current mirrors, some aftermarket solution concocted by the PO that is ugly as sin and only shoes your biceps. I literally raise my left arm up and my right arm out to look behind me. And they vibrate horribly.

I don't know what sort of technology they have over there but here, by the time they are a fly speck in your mirror or a dot on the horizon, they have already got your speed.

Noel, I'm usually looking behind me for LEO's as well. Sometimes they are speeding and catch up to you, sometimes they enter an on ramp at just the right time... And maybe they didn't clock you but caught up with you to try and get your speed by speed-matching (have had this done before).

Definitely a factor in my rear mirror usage. For now, I just end up looking behind me before every lane change. It's a good habit to have anyways. Developed it driving my first car... An '84 VW Vanagon that had dysfunctional mirrors that would fold in on you under the weight of the wind.
