Just wondering if there are any FJer's out there who reside in the Lower Mainland or Fraser Valley of British Columbia. I need some hands on assistance from someone with experience, at least more than I have which is very little, with running problems on my 92 FJ, any replies would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

There are a few FJ riders down there. Derek for one and a couple others. I am in the interior just north of Kamloops. Welcome to the nut house. Big R

Hi Mike I'm in the South Surrey area. Not a ton of experience but have learned a lot from this group. Happy to help if I can.

I'm on Vancouver Island.  Would do as much as my busy schedule allows, but with the ferry its not too practical.  Do a search for similar issues on here, then ask any questions that doesn't answer.  There is a lot of FJ knowledge on this site.

Thanks for the replies.  I don't expect anyone outside of the Lower Mainland to swing by, more just curious if there were any other FJ owners nearby.  What I'm interested in is someone with a similar bike that in their opinion is running well, I don't have anything to compare mine to and that would help.

Andrew if you're in Surrey and happen to be heading out this way for whatever reason and have time to stop by that would be great.  Seeing how you have the identical bike it would give me a good benchmark as to what I'm missing.

This all started after letting my bike sit for a year, started it a couple of times but no riding.  When I started it this year it was running really rough, hard to idle, backfiring, etc.  I poured some Seafoam cleaner into the gas tank and took it for a good ride a few weeks ago up to Harrison Lake and back, seemed so so on the highway but not running that well.  I then pulled the tank, drained the gas, changed plugs, changed the oil while I was at it, changed in line fuel filter.  This may have helped a little but still not running where it should be. I guess the dilemma is do I pull the carbs and attempt cleaning them, big job, no experience. Not sure if cleaning is enough or if I have to pick up rebuild kits for each carb while I'm at it, cost from what I've seen will be around $200.00 for all four.  Option B is to buy new carbs and just install, not sure that is the way to go, you can spend a lot of dollars really quick on these bikes, I'm trying to limit that.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Pull the carbs and clean them. 1st, get RPMs screw and o-ring kit, so you can replace the float needle seat rings. I've had mine apart several times over the years, and they still have most of the original parts in them, including the float bowl gaskets.
With the instructions available in the "FILES" section, you'll have no problems...

Okay, pulled carbs today with assistance from Tapartacus, he was kind enough to come out to Abbotsford and help me out, much appreciated.  Removed float bowl and diaphragm cover, carbs were spotless, zero gunk.  We removed the main jet to check for blockage and found what may have been a very slight blockage in two of the four carbs, cleaned everything up and reassembled.  Still need to check float height and then I will reinstall, however that may not be for a week or so. Is there anything else I should do or check before doing so?
I should also add that Tapartacus has a sweet ride, very smooth and I imagine running the way these bikes should.  He has convinced me to be patient and promised we could achieve the same with mine, can't wait.

Thanks for the responses.
