Took my measurements today........

Started by cleaning the top of the engine...........which consisted of 3 cans of brake cleaner, and a bunch of compressed air.



Removed the Valve cover bolts/grommets........Then a rubber mallet to dislodge the valve cover.
Pretty clean in there considering the mileage.........





One of the first thing I noticed, is slotted cam gears..........I didn't think they came with these from the factory? I couldn't see any name on them? Since I'm the second owner, I'm guessing the first owner had these put in when he had the top end serviced at some point?



Next I pulled the plugs......I put these in about 3 years ago......



I also marked the crank rotation, so I wouldn't accidentally turn it the wrong way and F it up.



Next, I laid out my worksheet, and my feeler gauges.



Before I started measuring, I used a fine honing stone to smooth off any burrs off the leading edges of the feeler gauges, and used the micrometer to check the accuracy of said feeler gauges..........I found a few of them to be off, so I re-marked them.....



I used the "Cam lobes pointed 180 degrees away from the valve" method, and went back around and measured them all a second time to verify my measurements.

Turns out that only 4 of the intake valves are still within spec.
The other 4 intakes, and all 8 exhaust valves are too tight..........

Next up is using the tool that Lee C. let me borrow, to take the shims out and mic them. See how many I can get away with moving around, then hopefully finding a shop that will let me exchange some or all of the rest.

Way to go Alan, slotted cam gears very nice, if you get a degree wheel then adjustments can be made for stretch in the cam chain.

Presuming your timing is stock, it's interesting to see how far to one side the exhaust sprocket is.

Thats the first thing I noticed? And I was wondering about that myself?
It would be interesting to put a degree wheel on it, and see what the cam timing is set at?
When I bought the FJ, the previous owner said he had the top end of the engine done by a guy who builds Legends Car engines, but thats all the information I got from him.
I assumed it was a shop in Phoenix, but it may not have been.
