Screw on Filter Mod - Possible without Draining Oil?

I just finished changing the oil in my 85 FJ.  It's a minor pain, due to necessary removal the Kerker exhaust in order to get to the drain plug.  Sure enough, I left the original gasket in place due to the replacement gasket being a bit over-sized.  Now oil is blowing back onto my right shoe either due to the gasket or something I may have caught between the filter casing and the mount.

I'm viewing this as a sign from above to invest in Randy's screw on filter mod.  Hate the thought of having to remove the exhaust yet again to empty the oil I just replaced.  Can I remove the filter and install the mod without losing too much oil, or will I just end up with a mess?

Check to see that you did not accidentally pinch the kick-stand safety wire between the bike and the housing.  VERY easy to do....

+1 on what Dan said. It's happened to me a couple of times, easy to do.... The answer to your question is yes.
The answer to the problem is the RPM screw on filter mod.

 :hi: The spin on/off filter mod from Randy is excellent...I've just fitted one to my '85  :good2:

Lean the bike over to the right and you should be able to take off the OEM filter housing without loosing much oil...Then again, you could always use a clean oil/windshield washer style jug with the front cut out to drain the oil in to and reuse :good:

If you have just changed the oil and filter, why not order the adapter and install it at your NEXT oil change.

The only oil you will lose is what's in the filter, no biggie.

Here's a tip I learned from the guys here on the forum: I too have a Kerker header on my '92 which blocks access to the drain. What the guys taught me was to drain the oil by removing the left side oil cooler fitting on the oil pan. I changed the Allen head cap bolts to a hex head so I could get my 10mm box ratchet on the bolts from the side. I Leave the bike on the side stand and due to the taller ride height dialed in on the back shock, all the oil drains nicely out of that side of the bike.
Yes, the oil does get on your header, no getting around that, but a squirt of S100 soap and it will wash right off. It's a good time to wash all the  accumulated  bugs off anyway, at every oil change (except for DavidR)

Sure is much easier than dicking around with that Kroaker....

Let me take a crack at this.  Technically, 'Moditis' breaks down as follows: 

Mod+ itis. 

'Mod' of course, is short for 'modification'.

'itis' is New Latin /Latin / Greek from the feminine of -itēs -ite, meaning disease usually inflammatory of a specified part or organ: 'inflammation of' eg. -laryngitis or appendicitis, or bronchitis...

ergo, we have inflamed or diseased/ [metastasized] sense of, or urge to, modify (one's FJ).

Easy peasy to understand, there is however, no known cure.  Once contracted, one of the few known short term reliefs, is the act of modifying.  It's resistance to treatment is more potent than the most virulent staff infection, or flesh eating virus.  Some owners have reported temporary relief by selling their FJ.  However, pangs of Moditis resurface along with the often-reported phantom-FJ syndrome, in short order.

The spin-on filter is a gateway drug, it's all downhill from there....
