The ceramic looks cracked in the first pic. I prefer Denso Iridiums over the NGK. I have heard stories recently of knock off NGK's

You could be right, makes sense, I'll check it out when I get home in a week (just returning from fj rally). Thankyou great suggestion

Make sure you replace your resistor caps when you put in new spark plugs. That carbon track will be on the inside of the caps as well.

A set of NGK Iridium DPR8EIX-9 #2202 and resistor cap XD05F #8072 will take care of this problem.

Just checked the plugs, they are carbon tracking but the cracks are definitely cracks and not just carbon tracks, the spark was actually coming out of the cracks to the body  and not from the plug cap itself.
Anyway I now have standard NGK's but because of the higher compression and hotter running I'm using colder plugs (9's instead of 8's). If these colder plugs work better I'll eventually switch to the equivalent Iridiums
