Hey, justin here, san diego, 85 FJ11 with the airbox removed and k&n pods in place running a little less than ideal.

hard to start (choke on full, no choke, in between). takes a while holding the starter to actually get it to start too, so bad that i have often killed the battery trying to start it up. once started, i get a bit of jumping around and backfiring at low rpms.

I went ahead and got the UNI dual pods after looking around on here and decided i was going to maybe try to handle the install myself. Especially after calling a shop and the guy telling me he won't work on the carbs without the stock airbox, some businesses don't like money i guess. :unknown:

i don't know a lot but i do know that attaching the new air filters is the least of my worries. i'm minimally familiar with carbs but what i do know is that the mixture has to be right. any advice from some of you that have maybe done this yourself? am i barking up the right tree with the symptoms listed? specifics on what i'll need when it comes to disassembling, cleaning, reassembling carbs optimally?

Thanks.

:hi: Hi and welcome to the crazy gang hang-out... :yahoo:

Back to basics question...How was the starting before you discarded the stock air box and added K & N pods to your FJ??

John.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely, in an attractive & well preserved body...but rather to slide in sideways, body completely worn out and and with your last dying breath screaming, "HOOOYA LIFE, lets try that again"!!!

jdsjds

thanks, monk.

John, it was gone before i got it so i can't say. i've seen that others have successfully made the pod-swap on here though and i just want to know their secrets.

Hello Justin, check to make sure your choke is properly activating. Take your tank off. Follow the choke cable down to the carbs. Now rotate on/off the choke collar on the left bar...see the cable pull the choke slider rod as you do this?
The rod which spans all 4 carbs should easily slide when you turn the choke collar...and at the same time, the sliding rod should open/close the choke links at each carb...all 4 links should open and close together
If the choke activation is working correctly then you need to take the carbs off and clean out the choke fuel circuit.

Read up in the carb Files section. We have all the info right there for you to use.

The problem lies not with your choice of air filter, but with the gunk that's in the carbs. Don't give up. Pat

Sounds like stock jetting, probably dirty a bit as well, with too much air.

Bigger brass, clean the bits out, job done.
