My exhaust fell off my new FJ!!!

So went out for a ride with my father on my new FJ :yahoo:

Did 120 miles no issues/problems along the coast here in California.


That is the last picture I took before heading home to watch the Superbowl.

As you can see, the cannister and exhaust is all there.

About 15 minutes later I was on a favorite road of mine and was opening it up a bit, and I noticed that the sound was a little harsher on my ears then I had remembered. At first I thought it was because I had removed my ear plugs.

5 miles later, my exhaust sound went from behind me to directly in front of me. I immediately tried clearing my ears thinking that was it and when it wasn't I pulled over realizing it must be my exhuast. I noticed both my cannister was gone and my connector piece from my headers to the can was also gone. Retracing my steps I found the connector pipe but was unable to find the can even going back a few miles. When I got home I traced through pics and so tomorrow I plan on going back to where the above photo was taken and retracing my steps from there.


In case I don't find it, Henry said he had gotten a great deal off someone here on FJowners, if that person is around can they tell me what kind of exhaust it is so I can replace it with something similar? Or can anyone? He did a bunch of work on the bike and has it tuned for the exhaust so I don't want to go back to stock if I don't have to, unless I can't find a similar can and have to. Here's another pic if it helps to identify....

Sorry to hear that your muffler and mid pipe fell off. It appears to me that you have a SuperTrapp internal disc muffler with a 2" inlet. If you are unable to locate it on your search. Here is an eBay link for a new one. Measure the OD of your mid pipe to make sure it is 2". There is a 2 1/2" inlet one available also. Hope this helps.

That looks like a Supertrap can. From your picture I can just barely make out the SS on the back of the can.

You know why it fell off...right? That's a long muffler can. From the picture look at where the clamp is located in relation to the weight of the muffler can. That's quite a cantilevered load, just waiting for failure.
You need to shorten the mid pipe so that the muffler clamp is located at least 1/3 the length of the can.

Check eBay to see what is available, also give Randy @ RPM a shout. He is working on a exhaust header for our FJ's and he plans on having several different muffler cans available as options. Perhaps he will have something for you..

I'm the one that gave it to Henry, but I don't know much about it.  It came with the wrecked '92 I bought from Klavdy/Marsh, but I replaced it before putting the bike back together.  It was sitting in my storage and Henry needed an exhaust, so I gave it to him.  I think I know about as much as you do about it unfortunately...

- It said Supertrapp on it, but was not the disk-type like I've had before
- the header was in good shape, mid-pipe was badly thinned from scraping in turns, and the can itself was in great shape

What I suspect: :scratch_one-s_head:

- The header, mid-pipe, and can were not a matched set...  (someone actually told me that, but I can't recall who)
- The fitment issue and subsequent loss of parts is related... I wonder if Henry used a different mid-pipe since the one I gave him was pretty thin and even rusted in the thin spot?  Maybe that's why it is longer than it should be?
- You'll need to shorten or replace the mid-pipe to get the clamp more onto the can...  assuming you can find it or buy another.

So if you really need to buy a mid-pipe and can, maybe its time to get a new exhaust?   :good:

Ask Randy about his FJ exhaust system, might be ready soon, all SST I think.

Ask Randy about his FJ exhaust system, might be ready soon, all SST I think.

That's just perfect! I rather wait to change my exhaust to something that i know for sure will fit my FJ. Been searching a lot on the web for exhaust, but why make it harder when you can get it all form one place?

So I've decided to replace the Supertrapp with another Supertrapp.

I still need the connector pipe though, anyone know if your local muffler shop would be able to do that or if I have to go somewhere online or elsewhere to get it done right?

If the diameter of the pipe you need is a commom size, i.e. 2", 2 1/4", or 2 1/2" then you should be ok with local muffler shops being able to bend a pipe for you.

Yeah, the header outlet is 2" and I plan on purchasing a 2" supertrap to replace the one that fell off.

My new Supertrapp arrived today!


Need to get the Collector pipe that goes from the headers to the Muffler fixed, my old one was hit or something when it fell off and the side the slips on/over the header is kinda squared off. I heard that a muffler shop might be able to re-round it for me so that's my first attempt, if not then I will try and fix it myself.



But it's sooooo shiny.

It came with 10 discs, but recommends to install 4-8 of them for a stock tuning set up. I'm not sure what the PO has  it tuned for, so I'm thinking of starting at 6 and seeing if the bike explodes. Also going to figure out a better way of attaching it so that it doesn't fall off this time. I'm thinking a quick spot-weld would be the easiest. The directions say there is a retaining plug that you can install, but I don't see it in the packaging.

The 'Retaining plug' that is being referenced, is usually a Phillips head screw that goes in the hole on the underside of the muffler. It screws into a threaded hole on the aft flange of the baffle.

The muffler should have came with a mounting strap that goes completely around the muffler.
