bloody fuel gauge, stopped it bouncing anyways...

I have a bouncy fuel gauge that was slated in to be repaired/refurbished at my leisure, but the other day it was being extra bouncy and in it's exuberance it actually jumped the little stop post in the gauge and now sits solidly well below zero.
That stopped the bugger bouncing on me! Take that fuel gauge!

Anyone else had this happen?




I got a bouncy tacho and speedo too, might do it all at the same time...

 Try a strong (rare earth / neodymium ) magnet. Just wave it close to, and in circles around the needle in different spots. Last time it happened to me, I found the best results near the axis of the needle.
For the Speedo, try cleaning and lubing the cable, worked a treat for me. Not sure about the tach.

Meant to say, the magnet will only get your get the needle back to the other side of the pin to the "bouncy state", not fix the problem. If you haven't already, do a search and you'll find other posts about stopping the bounce.

The fuel gauge has run dry of the liquid that dampens it. Some have attempted to refill it, with mixed results I think. The best (I think) solution was to add a stop pin by melting a small cut off piece of pin into the face.

Speedo.... Check your cable, lube your cable. If that don't work then wait and see if it starts to sing like a scalded cat. I ended up fitting an 84' speedo into my 86' with minimal effort. It still bounces a little but the cat has left the building, and the clutch cover stayed on the entire time. Imagine that?

I had the same problem with my fuel gauge, it bounced so much- it went all the way around.  It is much better now, I do not have the silly thing going off in the corner of my eye.

Now I judge my fuel economy by mileage.

I think I read in a post here that someone talked to an old Yamaha rep who stated the cause is the way the fuel level aparatus is installed at the factory, ie bent slightly to make a better fit.  I may be mistaken though.

I got a bouncy tacho and speedo too, might do it all at the same time...

I was going to take mine apart this winter and put some oil in it as described in one of the older links. Just not sure how much is too much. does anyone know the amount that would be required.
