We call them engine guards (Try not to use the word "CRASH" on a motorcycle site) and they are a Renntec product. Randy at RPM is now the North America dealer for them and can get all of their product for all bikes. This might help http://www.renntec.co.uk/international_dealers.html
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Looking stock.... I'm glad all this bodywork is safely put away.

There is a misunderstanding. I awas not asking about the Rentec engine guard (thanks Randy for the info). I was asking about the red "disc" just above the guard

If it is not a damper, what is it?. I like it

Those are horns, one on each side.

How do they sound mounted on the side? Are they much louder as you blow the horn on someone you are going around, who just cut you off.

Hell yes!    you can wield the sonic pain onto whomever you like!   Of course its not like my supertrapp (no discs) isnt giving them a huge ear FULL of FJ love on the pass anyway  :hi:

The Hella Super tones are so loud it really doesnt matter which way they are pointed....but i do think they are more effective being out in the open as compared to under the fairing.....out in the open they make ears bleed in all directions..... 100% success rate for stopping the idiots who want to pull out in front of you .... if i see their tires creeping i lay on the horns and dont let off until i am past them.....every single vehicle has stopped moving (so far) when getting the horns.

There's nothing like watching a non attentive person jump clean out of their seat (even with their windows up)

if they start drifting over on me ... i give'em a taste of the horns.... works much better than kicking their doors or taking their mirror off....

the horns are also dual tone so IMO they make a really expensive sound ...no one wants to hit a Merc or Beemer so they start looking around when they hear me. :good2:

really good price here.

http://www.amazon.com/Hella-SuperTone-Horn-Kit-118/dp/B000CRZXPI

you MUST use new wiring from the battery with a relay in order to make these horns do what they were designed to do..... which is to be loud and gather attention.... with todays texting/book reading drivers you have to have some shock and awe to get their attention.... they may not see me but they WILL hear me and pay attention..... this horn button never gets tired!!!!!  :music:

video below is a pretty good representation but the horns are under the cars bodywork so they are muted somewhat....still overdriving the recording microphone.... those really piercing high frequencies can actually penetrate a dumbass drivers brain pan!

Stock RS horn vs. Hella Supertones

Years ago on the "old board" I was inspired by that photo of Frank's bike (and Frank) and and can definitely verify everything said. They are brilliant. My kids christened them "the horns of death" - severe ear bleed if you are close enough...
Just about to transplant them across to FJ2....

LOL Glen,
"Horns of death"  reminds me of a funny story.

Every year ,about the time the Tour de france comes on TV, our local roads are taken over by roving packs of bicyclists who think the race is taking place anywhere they decide to ride...... i mean they will actually block the entire road.

I got behind one of the packs and tried filtering thru them but there was just too many of them (maybe 100?) and not enough space for me to safely get past so I laid on the horn button hard and steady....... they were all looking around and giving me shitty looks but after 5 minutes of steady ear bleeding noise, one by one they started lining up on the side of the road ....... i wasnt about to let them have a nice peaceful bike ride while they were being road hog assholes!

i didnt let off the horns until i was past each and every single one of them (giving each cyclist a combo of ear bleeding full tone and one finger salute).....I felt like Moses parting the sea as a huge line of traffic also followed me past the lined up bicycles.

Supertone horns never get tired! :dance2:

Tried to add this before.....

....and no, I don't usually park in rivers... 90 seconds prior it was bone dry....
Unfortunately, the Supertones failed to "part" the waters this time...

KOokaloo indeed sir!   :good:

I totally understand your pain.  Here in the People's Commune of Portlandia, the Bicycle Brigade of the Anti-Destination League clogs our roads incessantly during the summer months.  I shall have to seriously consider augmenting the FJ's arsenal with a set of Hella's in my continuing fight against the ADL.

SlowOldGuy

Same thing here in Texas.

You'd think they would be busy doping instead of clogging the roads.
