Am I just being a tightwad or is this possible?

I had a fair search and couldn't find the answer to this question, so thought I would ask here.

I got a shitty mirror, it has a small amount of the silver peeling off the back, now I was wondering if it is at all possible to just change the glass in it?
The thing looks like it is a sealed unit, and looks impossible to just replace the glass, am I right?

Just a tightwad.... I love your posts... Consider better mirrors...
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

if your that scroogy,  take to it with a heat gun, glass will come out, could take some work to get the housing back in shape
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

try lane splitting in heavy traffic with your elbows extended, you should pick up a nice selection of mirrors  :good2:

So the answer is no one knows? Because the oem mirror for a 92 is close to 85 bucks! Replacing the glass maybe 10 bucks for custom cut?

I have heard that some have replaced the glass. It requires heat to soften the plastic and surgeon's touch not to break the glass stuffing it back in. Or you could put after market CBR mirrors on like I did and see past your elbows. They look better on the bike as well. See http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1562.msg34868#msg34868

You need to remove the mirror bases and use the FJ base. I had to grind some material off the FJ base to fit the new mirror stalk.

So the mirrors will bolt straight on when removing the base?

The CBR mirrors look much better then stock. Is there a specific year modell the mirrors needs to be from?

Hmm... EBay here i come (again....)

Yes, the base needs to be the FJ base. Getting the CBR base off will require some heat, thread lock is tough stuff. And you will likely need to grind off some of the FJ base to clear the CBR stalk, not much. I can take a picture if you need to see it.

Simi_Ed posted this when put them on: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=283.msg2091#msg2091

Yes please. I would appreciate it  :good2:

Pictures delivered, see below.

Not quite in focus but you need to tilt the mirrors on the 86/87 FJ, before I had the wedges made I used a Philips bit jammed under the high side. Tilt was perfect and it never fell out.

Hard to see but look at the right side where the stalk kicks over. I used a Dremel but a hand file will work and almost as quick. Another advantage is you get to keep the boot for the base. Remember to slide it on before installing the base, and do one side at a time to avoid mixing them up and redoing it to fix it.

Allow me to add, as a cheap, scheming bastard, that I attempted to change/remove the glass in a couple of mirrors of mine. To be concise: what a frustrating clusterfuck! Damn, did I get pissed off.
I'd say don't bother, just get replacements. I found that GSXR mirrors also work on my '92 without monkeying under the base. (Don't remember what year/displacement at the moment though. Sorry.)

$18 incl. postage a pair (to Aus). Look great, glazing not terrific but you don't notice when riding, don't vibrate, I can see behind me for the first time with rocking my body side to side and all I had to do was elongate the holes a little.
I'm very happy with them and see no need to upgrade them for better quality ones.

CBR600/1000RR '03 - '10. I'm sure about the model but you had better double check the year, it's on here somewhere. I can give you the seller details if you want.
