The dealer will be more than happy to rebuild that for you.  It'll take 2 months, and cost $2500, and there will only be a 3 month warranty, but, they will be happy to do it.

Reminds me when some woman I used to work with had heard that I rode, and she asked my "SO, what kind of Harley to you have?" (slap hand on forehead).

They just are not able to think outside the HD box!

Having ridden a lot of Harleys and almost every other type of bike out there, I would not say one type of bike is perfect.  They all have their good and points.  Harleys are a lot of fun to ride, they open up traffic in front of you with a twist of the throttle, the ladies love them (Except for the FJ and a few superbikes or sportbikes which have some comfort, what woman would want to ride in that position (Looking like a dog fucking a football) for any length of time and who can blame them?), you have instant although unearned credibility as a biker, people are intimidated sometimes (good and bad), they actually feel quite light when driving and moving around a parking lot, there are thousands of biker events and the Harley people are more organized than the rest of us.

Personally, I prefer my old Yamahas, FJs, V-Maxes and Venture Royales because they are fun to drive, easy to fix and attract more than their share of attention where I travel.  If some people think that Harleys are not good bikes, they should try following my friends through the city of Mexico with wall to wall traffic.  They will amaze you.  May not be the fastest bikes on the road but if you have been driving bikes for a very long time, you should know, it is not the type of bike that makes you a biker. 

We, as FJ riders should know that better than most.  There are probably the majority of riders who do not ride much but enjoy owning a bike to share time with friends, etc.  There are also many people who absolutely love the repairing and modifications that we do to our bikes more than anything else.  Even if they didn´t ride much, who would not call them a biker? 

Just get on your bike and ride someplace new.

Way to throw a wet blanket on it Greg...

I too have ridden my fair share of Harleys.  Riding anything is better than riding nothing, on this we agree.  But my disdain for Harleys comes less from the outdated, under-engineered (even poorly engineered in some cases) bikes, and more from the Harley community.  That 'instant credit' you get by simply swiping your credit card, is not only undeserved, as you say, it seems to go immediately to the heads of some of these posers. This detracts, rather than adds to the larger motorcycle community.   

I had a driver that worked for me that rode a Suzuki savage / thumper.  He 'upgraded' to a $14,000 Heritage Softtail (1986 dollars!).  He told me how pleasurable it was to 'finally get to snub other non-Harley bikers, and not waive back to people that waived at him'.   This was the genesis of my disdain for the Harley community. 

A few year ago, I helped my neighbor get his Sportster back on the road.  It had sat for a few years, so it needed a going through.  We went through the carbs -expected, but there was also an electrical issue that took us a couple of hours to diagnose and fix.  He rode it a few times that summer but then stopped riding it because it would not start one day.  I was not impressed.

I rented a Harley Street Rod and rode it for 1,000 miles or so, a few years back.  Loved the low-end torque we passed 100's of cars, and it was not unpleasant to drive distance, but it was a tub in the twisties, and needed my intervention with the crappy tool kit several times to keep things from vibrating off.  Again, net net, despite some good, I was not impressed. 

Yes Harleys are bikes too and all, but I'll stick with products from Japan inc. until I see something better.

Sorry to put a wet blanket by having an opinion, I forgot for a second, it is an FJ Forum and nobody is allowed to like other bikes.  I prefer the mixed bunch of bikes rather than a meet with only one bike.  Of course, it would not handle the curves like a Japanese sportbike or even an FJ but they are designed for something different.  Different strokes for different folks.  If the things that some idiot wannabe bikers say or do piss you off, welcome to the real world.

Yes, Harleys have a different design principle than most of what comes from Japan inc.  No, you are incorrect, you are entitled to like whatever bikes you like, of course.  This includes Harleys.  Yes, diversity is what makes the world go-round. 

Never said I was pissed off.  I simply said I had disdain for the community.  The larger motorcycle community is generally a fairly inclusive one.  This does not always extend to the Harley guys and that's a shame.  If I feel anything, I guess it'd be pity.

Well, if Leon agrees, then I must now take it all back and disagree: Harleys are cool, they are well engineered and really better in every substantive way to other bikes.  I would ride one but I'm not cool enough, nor can I afford their lofty, and well deserved -I might add, price tag.   

Can't go agreeing with Leon... the universe is now put right again. For a second I thought the Mayans were right, Armageddon averted...

You could mass produce and market these, just like that, with the metal filings and oil slick (I'd use hardened epoxy) and, I'd bet a fair number of folks would buy these.   I'd call them, 'truth-nuanced novelties' and you'd sell thousands...
