gas squirts out the carbs

hello
i just bought my first fj last week. i got it for $500.00. it has been sitting in his shop for about 3 yrs. it runs but not good and the clutch has no pressure to it. the only things that are wrong with it body shape wise is the front fender (i guess) is cracked and it is missing the lower faring. but other than that it is in great shape. (i think)

but i am starting on the motor trying to get it running good. to start out the carbs are squirting out gas out of the small hole on the right of the carbs in the pic it is inside the red ring

also the guy told me that the rings needed to be reseated..... is that posible? he told me to pour a little kerosene into the spark plug hole and let it set for a min then crank over the engine with the plugs out then reinstall the plugs and start it. what do you think? there is oil dripping from the exaust again inside the red ring

i am in need of some help as i have never worked on a bike before so any advise will be of great help

thanks
david

Hello, David,

You said you don't have any experience working on bikes... If you're going to take on this project yourself, I hope you at least have experience working on cars - preferably older ones with carburetors...

That said, the first thing you need to do is find out where that oil is coming from. It may be relatively minor, like a leaky clutch cover gasket, or it might be something bad enough that nothing else matters because you'll want to get your money back.

Assuming for the moment that your oil leak isn't a major problem, your clutch trouble might possibly be solved by bleeding, but it's quite likely that you'll need to rebuild the slave and/or master cylinders.

And your carbs are most likely going to need to be cleaned and the o-rings replaced... after 3 years of sitting, that's a virtual certainty.

But first find out where that oil is coming from - that must be your first order of business!

Hope this helps...

Is the fuel dribbling out of the orifice you show, or is it squirting out?  If it's squirting out, then the 2 large vent/overflow hoses attached between the two sets of carbs are kinked or blocked.  When this happens, the fuel pump pressurizes the float bowl and forces fuel up the main jet where it squirts out the emulsion tube (and directly into the engine) and out the main air bleed orifice.

If the fuel is just dribbling out, then you've got a float or needle/seat problem.

This is just for future reference.  Do what Steve says and fix the oil leak(s) first.  The clutch problem is bad seals and corrosion on the slave cylinder.

thanks guys
about the carbs it is more like a stream it will actually flood out the bike. i have to hold the throtle wide open to get it started.
i do have experence with cars and trucks i have built 3 "ricers" working on 2 jeeps and 1 older ford 4x4 (well soon to be 4x4)
so i am not afraid of trying anything new when it somes to engines.   and if it comes down to it if i have to rebuild the motor i will,
i was just hoping that it might be something simple that would get it road ready sooner but if this has to be a winter project...
so be it (hoping not though)

thanks

i forgot to say the oil only drips from the tail pipe when it is running.. so that has to be rings right?

The oil discharge may stop once you eliminate the excessive fuel from running through the engine. You are probably washing out your rings.  :shok:
The oil may be coming for your crank case vent as well.

Sometime you can take the carbs off, clean them with gum out, and this will solve the problem.  I have done it before, and it worked great, I just remove the fuel bowl screw, spray in gum out, let it set, sprayed all the orifices, and walla, bike ran great.  Some times it is just a matter of freeing up the floats.  I have had them get stuck before.  You can shut the fuel petcock off, then run the carbs out of fuel.  Sometimes this will let the floats drop and will solve the problem, maybe only temporarily, but it can give you a better idea of what is going on with your carbs.  I had Concours that would get a float stuck open from time to time, I just ran the fuel out of the carbs and the problem was solved.  It happen mostly when I would leave the bike on the kick stand.  If I use the center stand I never had a problem.

Anyways, that my $.02.

Later...  :bye2:

Glad to hear you've had grease under your fingernails before! ;)

I'm sure you've noticed that the area you circled in your pic is the rear of the 4-into-2 collector that covers most of the bottom of the motor; you know how oil can travel...

You mean that that the oil is coming out of the pipe, not dripping down from above it (like off the bottom of the motor somewhere)?

well i think it is coming out of the tail pipe but i haven't been able to work on it this weekend so i haven't been ablt to start it to make sure. it looks like it is dripping out the collector

SlowOldGuy

If the rings were bad enough to let oil "drip" from the exhaust, I'd bet that it wouldn't even run because it would instantly foul the plugs.  If it was rings, it would be smoking.

Easy enough to verify with a compression check (remember to open the throttle all the way and disconnect the coils if/when you do this.

David in TN,

If it'll fire at all, it seems far more likely that it's dripping OFF the collector, not out of the collector.

But just to eliminate that possibility, take off the muffler on that side and stick your finger in the collector to see if there's actually liquid oil further up the pipe.

You'll know in an instant, because for that oil to be dripping out of the pipe, there'd have to be a lot in there.

If it's not really oily an inch or two up inside the pipe, it's coming down from above the collector somewhere, and you'll need to find out where.

If there is oil up inside the collector, do the compression check.

As a matter of fact, a compression check would be a good idea anyway, just to give you a general idea of the health of your motor.

Let us know your progress...

Hope this helps,

Are you sure its oil? .... and not just black water (condensation with soot) cause by the gross rich condition induced by the crabs..er, carbs?

Potential oil sources:
Valve cover gasket,
Valve cover shoulder bolt rubbers,
Crud from the chain/countershaft sprocket,
Leaking clutch cover gasket,
Leaking countershaft sprocket seal,
Leaking crankcase breather tube,
ETC.

Replace with Spacely Seals and change the sprocket to a Cogswell Cog!

David, I am on the floor rolling and laughing my ass off. Thank you!....

After watching the fires getting closer and closer to my home I needed a good laugh.

By the way...How do I get one of your carb kits?
