Make sure your choke isn't on or cable bound up. Then check your throttle cables. Take the seat and fuel tank off and check the cables. Should idle close to 1000 RPM. Do that first then on to some other things. :). Let us know how you are doing.

I have another question.A little smoke comes from under the seat and that happens when i let it idle for a while.I put half a can of seafoam in it.could that becausing build up in the carb to burn off?

If the crankcase breather pipe, which runs from the top of the crankcase to the bottom of the airbox, has become detached at either end or has split you will get this.  Most FJ's will pump a bit of smoke out there.

Glad to see you picked her up. She looks to be in really good condition. What a great Christmas present you gave yourself. Be careful here, you will catch the mod bug and soon your little beauty there will be updated with 21st century running gear.

Merry Christmas,

Iam not mechanically inclined but iam about to start trying.Found a tag office opened today.Got the title and tag.Went to take it out for a little spin.It idles to high between 2500 and 3000.Could this mean he set the idle for a reason like that or does it mean it just needs the id adjusted. If so iam about to learn how to do this. And i guess it means i will have to remove the tank to do this..
Could mean an intake leak. Randy RPM has orings to fix it. Mine as soon as it warmed up would go up to about there, and no matter what I did I couldn't get it down. Except if I unplugged the vacuum advance. I checked the vacuum advance by replacing it with a spare. Still did the same thing. I had done the starter fluid test and even sprayed water. To check for intake leak and got nothing. So I replaced the orings, problem went away. Check every thing else first. And if nothing works show this to your mechanic friend. Intake orings are easier to repace than it looks. I had them out of Randy's carb kit, and didn't put them in because I thought it was too much work. spent several hours of frustration trying to figure the high idle. I finally put them in as a last chance effort. Took about 15 minutes. wish I would have just replaced them with the rest of the kit.

Welcome. Great looking bike I'm jealous

More likely oil from bad cam cover bolt grommets and/or the gasket burning off...

Don,
It was nice to chat with you on the phone yesterday. You sound excited to be an FJ owner, which is a good thing!

One thing I forgot to mention is the carbs. The older carb diaphragms tend to wear out over time, and develop little pinholes or even larger worn strips where the material abrades.

New diaphragm/slide sets are really expensive, but some here have had luck patching theirs with a product called liquid electrical tape. (I have some if you find that yours *ARE* worn.)

I mention the carbs, because if the bike has been without routine maintenance for any length of time, they will probably need to be thoroughly cleaned for you to get the best performance and reliability out of your new machine.

Plus, you have to remove the carbs to replace those intake manifold O-rings, so that's a good time to have a look at them.

Just food for thought. I know you have your hands full right now.

An oil change would be a good starting point. Maybe even change out the clutch and brake fluids, just to start "fresh".

Here a website where you can buy diaphragms for your carbs for about $21 each.  Personally, I opted for a set of new carbs from Randy at RPM Racing and I am very happy with my purchase.  More power, better fuel economy, less vibration, better starting and just overall much smoother.

Don,
I have a set of mercury manometer gauges for balancing the carbs, when you get to that point. Balanced carbs make a *HUGE* difference!
