Does Canada use UK gallons?  My recollection (not recent) is either US gallons or Liters, at least in Windsor.

BTW  Don't let your conversion difficulties force you to walk :-)

Many of you will recall some years ago a Boeing leaving Canada ( I think ) without an operational fuel gauge. It was permitted to do so provided sufficient fuel was loaded prior to takeoff.

It ran out of fuel!

What most would recall was they were able to glide to a disused airport somewhere in the USA at which a car event was being held and it's approach and landing caught on film, many people not seeing it till the very last because there was no noise.

The problem? A simple confusion over litres, which I recall Canada had recently changed to, and gallons.  They had loaded X number of litres and the pilots looked at the figures and signed off thinking they were gallons and had no fuel gauge to double check their diminishing fuel supply.

The passengers came very close to walking home not being an option.

I see you are the type who like to keep an argument going.  Canada is a metric country but the people still use the antiquated UK system (since legally, we are part of the commonwealth for now) of gallons when we talk about cars, liquor and other things as well. But continue nitpicking...it is fun to read...just sayin´.

Working on aircraft for many years once in a while while we would get a pilot hanging around while refueling and we would pull the "liters or was it gallons" routine and argue about it in front of him or her. It was a lot of fun giving them something to think about. :). All of our trucks were in gallons... The FE in lift aircraft usually would convert from lb's to gallons for there fuel request.

Things to ponder:

FJ fuel in Idaho 3.499 dollars per gallon.
1 gallon = 3.78541 liters
Conventional gasoline = 125,000 BTU per U.S. gal
Ethanol =   84,600 BTU per U.S. Gal (who is getting the short end on this deal ?)

Hi

Just an update on my reserve problem..  My FJ has been having a major overhaul over the past 3 months . Front suspension all back together this weekend so decided to check out reserve problem.
Disconnected switch and did a basic continuity check to find switch was open circuit in both positions.
I was able to carefully prise open the housing to find badly corroded terminals. A clean up with WD 40 then cleaned off brass connections with wire wool and re assembled. All good as new now . I will attach before and after pics of the switch

Phil :yahoo:

Cant seem to attach photos can someone guide me how to do it ?

Cant upload photos but see pics on my blog link below

As a footnote to this fuel tank reserve switch problem.
Got bike insured and registered today , had a day off work so off for a ride with spare fuel container to test out reserve system
After about 10 kms of fuel light flickering the bike started missing, so switched over to reserve with repaired switch and all was well  :yahoo:

Decided to see how far I could get before completely empty as I had spare fuel ( good for future reference ).  Finally petered out after 62 km,s

 Excellent Phil. That's exactly how to do it. Strap on a can of gas and ride on reserve 'till it dies.

Now you know exactly how far reserve will take you.

Although in using the reserve mileage for future reference, Don't to forget factoring in a head wind.

Good job laddie. Kudos.    Pat

The reserve switches on VMAX's have the same problem. On my ride home from buying my Vmax I found out the hard way :dash2:. the switch didn't work when I turned it to reserve, but if I turned the bike off then on the pump would run and I could ride another mile or two then it would die again :ireful:. finally figured it out a few days later that the switch was bad so I took it apart it was very corroded cleaned and greased worked great then :good2:.
