Exhaust gasket, or lack of?

Just putting everything back together after a big service, and I've started it for the first time, got it running but it sounds like a tractor!  I balanced the carbs and that's made it better, but still, it's noisy! It's been quite a while since I stripped it down I've forgotten what it should sound like! Was going to fiddle with the carbs and idle some more but ran out of time.

It sounds as if it's coming from the exhaust on the front of the cylinder, when I removed the exhaust to access the sump bolt, there wasn't any gaskets, so I refitted without... Should there be some?  Exhaust is a Remus GP fitted by someone previously, blowing a bit from the can but that's at the other end of the bike.

Jobs in the service included carb strip and clean, oil change with pan removal and clean, new clutch plates, and valve check. It also blew a fuse when restarted, but don't think that's related.

Yes there should be gaskets between the pipe and the head. Go to RPM Randy he can set you up, if not your closest dealership.

They're kinda hard to see sometimes, but there's definitely a gasket needed.  You might even be able to see the fire if you start it in the dark.

I would order from RPM but shipping and time become a factor (uk based!) I'll pop up to my LBS who's a Yamaha dealer.

Thats what you are looking for . As the last person said that can be hard to spot as they are not blatantly obvious . There will be a recess in the exhaust port if they are not there . it`s easier to spot if they are missing than if they are there . Logic will tell you it isnt right if they are not there .

Those gaskets get compressed and kinda bond to the ports, I had to use a pick to get them out when I swapped exhaust systems... It  looked like there were no gaskets, but , as she had the original exh. on her, I knew they had to be there...

I found mine sitting in the ports, a bit of levering with a screwdriver got them out.  New ones going in tomorrow, hopefully back on the road in the afternoon!
