Do you guys in the States have different fuel additives to us?

I work exclusively on carby motors (and the FJ's) these days and I just don't see the problems you seem to have with dirt and blockages.
I cleaned the FJ carbs for the first time at 90,000 k's, and they were as clean as a whistle, which didn't surprise me.

The only issue is occasionally a particle blocks a main jet but never any evidence of a general build up of crud.

Do they add ethanol to your gas? That's the biggest problem here in the States, we have 10% ethanol in our fuel. They're talking about going to 15%  
It causes several problems, the worst being the crud that comes from the ethanol absorbing water... Damn know-nothing Federal beaurocrats mandating things in areas about which they have no freakin' clue!

Ditto what Noel said.. In NZ we are ethanol free although at least one compnay is starting to offer a 10% blend at the pump. I pulled my carbs down and the only thing i found was rust gunk from the tank, the rest was so shiny and clean you could've eaten off it.. if you like the taste of 96 octane BP that is..

yes, Ethenol is available for those wanting to save the Planet one dirty carby at a time, but you have to seek it out rather than avoid it.

California has just changed over the the "winter" blend of fuel which can be as high as 15% ethanol. The standard summer fuel is listed as 10%, but that is from the California Air resource Board website that was last updated in 2010...

The ethanol is the biggest issue as it is #1 corrosive and #2 evaporates quickly. Once both of these things happen...the pilot jets are plugged...

California is trying to save the world, not the state...

I know I read an article a few years back about the geographical origins of the fuel.  I seem to remember that the highest quality comes from the Arab nations, followed by Russia America and a collection of third world countries last on the list was North Sea stuff.  As I understood it they blend the poorer stuff with higher quality Arabian stuff.  All our cheap supermarket fuel comes from Russia.  The really poor stuff (from North Sea is used as heating oil)

As for additives like anti foaming agents I think that varies between manufacturer 'recipes'.  A few years back there was an incident where a batch had to much anti foam agent and loads of cars where damaged.  The refinery somehow managed to dodge the bullet landing the customer with the repair costs!
