Went over to the shop where my bike's at to take a look on how it's progressing.
The mechanic were really stunned of how good shape and condition this engine was in, there were almost no sign of any wear and tear that you would expect at this milage. Even the crank shaft and conrod bearings were in really good condition. Guess i was lucky when i bought it?
Not bad for a bike that has gone 107.000 km and almost 30 years old  :good2:

Will be ordering some parts shortly, either tomorrow or Monday... depends. As of now I am looking at $950 to $1000 in parts..

Regarding the 2nd gear issue, he could not find that much fault in the gearbox. One fork was obviously worn (3?) other then that it looked really good. I had expected really worn teeth and so on, but the looked as good as new...
Anyway he will do the good job required to fix the gear issue  :good2:

I took some photos while the block was on the workbench, enjoy! NO DRULING OVER MY GIRL NOW, Y'all hear?  :rofl2:

Damn, all this photography stuff makes me hungry!!

Whant to check out my photos on the bike??

Man, I am totally getting a chubby looking at the innards of your motor. You are going to have one special FJ when you are done with all this work. Which speaks volumes as to the beauty of our beasts.

Right (ride) on, and thanks for the share,

I have that information all the time...

The range of the cranks is 27.2 to 30.0 of all of them I have weighed over the years.

I just pulled a crank that I am replacing from an engine today and it weighs 27.3lbs

Okey, could anyone tell me a bit more in detail about the undercut of the tranny? How much undercut is needed and on what? Read somewear its the upcut that needs undercuitting?

The parts related to the 1st and 2nd gear will be replaced along with the shift fork. A major undercut job will seariuly affect my budget and time frame, but will do what it takes to get it done.

Cheers

I believe Randy @RPM sells new 1st and 2nd gears that are already undercut so no need to do any machining when you receive them. Send him a direct e-mail.

He does? If so then thats excellent news! Have been in contact with him and will be sending a list of needed parts shortly. Will be sure to ask him.
The 1st and 2nd gear would be the 2nd and 5th wheel pair on the shaft if i am not misstaken?

They do? I'm no mechanic so I can't argue with any mechanical insight I'm afraid, But the mechanic working on the bike doesn't seem to share that opinion. I trust him, but it's always nice to get more information and other insights and opinion since there is a ton of information and experience in this community. Wouldn't wont let that go to waste  :good2:
Most of the gear wheels were in surprisingly very good shape. 3rd and 4th gear were the ones who had evidence of wear and would need to be replaced.

Have emailed a list of parts needed to Randy so I would hopefully put in an order today. Need to get clarified if it's enough to order the 3rd and 4th gearwheel (pre-undercut if available) and shift fork to erase the gear issues.
The time here now is 09:30Am and theres a good 9 hours difference to SoCal, so now I only have to wait for Randy to wake up and get to work

Cheers

The gears look ok but the dogs and drivers need cut.Pics show a big radius there. When they are rounded of like that they wont hold.Undercuting puts an angle on them that locks them together tight and removes the radius. If they were real bad they might weld them first then cut them.I have done 2 of my bikes after buying them cheaper because of 2nd gear issues.I bought gear sets complete of of ebay that were already undercut. That way I had all the parts I needed before I started.Had to do the 90 and the 85 the 86 is good the 84 I have not had out so it might need done I dont know yet.I now have  2 old sets so I could also send them off to get cut.Shift forks wear and can bend the earlier year forks are smaller and weaker than later year forks so its highly recomended to use later year forks.
Undercutting is easy if you have the right tools once you get set up it would take about 5 min to compleate.
