clutch slave adjustment??

I was reading about motocross bike clutch slave units and they were talking about adjusting the slave cylinder with shims after many hours of use. They were self adjusting for a while and then after the clutch plates wear down to half of original thickness or so the slave needed to be shimmed. Is our slave continually self adjusting?  [84-1100]
