Mystery wires

Attached are pics of a couple "mystery wires" which I've puzzled over for at least 2 years now, in the hopes that someone here can help identify them. Everything on the bike works (everything electrical, that is) so I'm not sure what to make of these.

"Whoso identifyeth the wires of this bike, is rightwise King born of (your state, province, or municipality here)" - or an "Uncle Herschel's Favorite" from Cracker Barrel.

unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

Try uploading the pics to imageshack.us, and then posting the 'forum code' here (or just putting a 'direct link' inside tags, sans spaces).

I'm pretty immersed in the wiring diagram at the moment, I'd love to have a go at it!   :good2:

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

That top one is thte infamous "green connector" that is used on the California models to activate a valve between the carb vents and the charcoal cannisters (I think).  This connector makes a good "switched" source for electrical goodies.

I can't blow the second picture up enough to see it.  Kinda looks like the alternator lead (but that should have a red connector housing).  Is it a single wire under the left sidecover?

Wow those pics are tiny. Not even going to try, haha.

The second wire(s) consist of one yellow and one brown into a white connector, located behind the right side cover.
Thanks for the info on the other one. It will come in handy.

Isn't that the "spare" connector of randomness?  Brown wire sounds familiar there.

I direct you to this page:

And then to the wiring routing diagrams in the 'service manual' that's actually a supplement (given in odd/even pages) in the 'files' section, which give visual clues as to what is (should) be located where.

Hola and welcome to the community!

Really nice bike and good purchase! Congratulations!

There are some tricks that avoid/decrease oil consumption
1.- Use 20/50 or 10/40 (cheap) mineral oil API SG to avoid clutch slippage. And the thicker oil is more appropriate for the air cooled tolerances
2.- If synt oil is used the valve guides o-rings get cooked & rock hard in consequence and the bike spend oil
3.- Don´t use the owners manual procedure to check the oil level. Do it when cold. With the owners manual procedure you overfill the crankcase and the excess oil go to the airbox and then to the engine

I´ve not read that the valve guides were changed. If the oil consumption is there, as it seems, and you only change the o-rings or valves, the oil consumption will continue. Before to make any re-bore I would change the valve guides and  fit Randy valve guides o rings http://www.rpmracingca.com/

Be careful: the Randy shop is addictive!

For more tricks too I have a couple of things in my web

Regards

Alf

Where does this green connector to be found?
BMW 1150GS
Moto Guzzi California 3

I did find my green connector, it was hooked up to another green one, which makes my bike a California model i suppose.
