Oil filter housing WARNING

Hi, Just a reminder to you all to be careful, even with a simple job!

  I have just started to change the oil & filter on my latest FJ. The previous person who serviced the bike made the classic mistake of trapping the side stand wire under the oil filter housing, then overtightening it as it would have weeped oil thus cracking it. The evidence is clear as the wire is double wrapped with insulating tape!
I have just ordered a new housing (£59.00).

I am sure this issue has come up before, but I hope this reminder saves someone else a problem.

Thats a fair and reasonable point, but I am planning to keep this bike as standard as possible!

Get the adapter and put the housing on the shelf like I did. If for some ungodly reason I want to go back, I can. I think I would perfer to extract all my teeth with pliers before I do though.

rpm adapter makes it so much easier for filter changes, and dousn't stand out like you think when fitted ,
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

rpm adapter looks better IMHO and functions better, keep the original in the parts bin :)

remember Original does not = good or functional, its just what they could afford when they built the bike.

Lots of things you can do to an already good bike but I have to say the Spin on filter change is great to say the least. Makes oil changing a pleasant and quick operation and it looks good to boot. Put the stock stuff in a box and give it to the next owner if they want to use it.. They won't...... 10 out of 10 rating.

Hi Movenon & all you other guys who have responded. Its seems a pretty conclusive and convincing set of views. Clearly I am a little out of date! I have not owned an FJ for about 7 years, so I have some catching up to do. Now that you have explained the merits of this conversion I will definitely convert to this system.

:good:   You won't regret it, IMO.

Several good filters are available in black, so it's not something that stands out as modified.

Agree on the change to the spin on adapter. Just fitted mine and would be quite happy to send on my original housing to anyone in need.
Fitted the black K&N 303 filter and it looks fine. If you like a bit of sparkle you can get the chrome one.

WARNING , stay away from rpm , it improves your Fj , randy has the best service , too many fantastic Fj items you. will/must have , , very addictive, you have been warned  :good2:

if you're gonna stick with the stock filter housing, don't even think about touching that phillips head drain screw.  it'll strip out in no time.

Yep, if you are gonna stay stock then just JB weld that screw in place.... It will end that way give a little time, and fill in the Philips as well so anyone else won't try to remove what was JB welded in....

                    You have all thoroughly convinced me to change to an RPM spin on, but in the meantime I am sorry to show my ignorance, but what exactly is JB welding?

JB weld is the brand name of an epoxy like product that is really tough. You have similar products in you country, just different names.
