I received an email asking me to sign a petition opposing mandatory Hi-Vis clothing for motorcyclists.
This is the first I've heard about this and don't know if this proposal is even being considered, but I signed anyhow.

I believe as of this year its mandatory in France to have something like 50% of your visible surface area covered in hi-vis

I'm told I'm cynical, pessimistic and generally miserable. I say that I'm realistic! The fact that reality sucks is not my fault!

That stuff just make you easier to find after the accident. We had a member here a few months ago wearing Hi-Vis or something close and was hit in a round-about. Good thing he wasn't wearing a helmet, might have broke his neck.... (he had all is gear on....) Just having a short rant....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

I can't see that ever becoming a law in the USA. Michigan just repealed the helmet law! Besides, there are way too many "bikers" (Harley riders) out there keeping the black leather market alive and well. They would never put up with those sissy hi vis jackets and gear.

Sounds a bit fishy to me, must be the transitional bioluminescent lanternfish oil extract!

Victoria is known for introducing some vile anti motorist initiatives like the Motorcycle Safety Levy which I believe is an addition to the TAC levy also the use of unmarked speed camera cars, oh my goodness how uninformed and rude of me, safety cameras  :diablo:

This where it becomes a problem for the rest of Australia, they see the dollars raked in and say geez look how well it worked in Victoria they will do this the same with the Hi viz shit.

The next step is the Insurance companies who will mandate that you have to wear a certain % of Hi Viz (a la France) so that when you do have an accident and they get your gear and declare you are under that % by .00000000000001 they will refuse to pay any insurance.

Riding gear manufactures will have no guidelines to make the Hi Viz stuff to and will either not do it or will just wack on a price hike to justify putting on a 2 cent bit of reflective tape.

I have signed the petition and given a Victorian post code.

The French also have a law that makes all motorists carry their own breathalizer kit, if you are stopped without one you get a hefty fine..if you are stopped with one and they tell you to use it you have to produce another before you are allowed to ride on, even to the nearest fuel stop or you will get fined for not having one...

When I ride with my Hi-VIZ vest people pull out in front of me more often than they do without it. Maybe this is just a rural thing ? But my theory is that they can "better" judge my speed and therefore "think" there is plenty of room to pull out. Anybody else had that experience?
