Slip on's versus luggage

Hi folks, just looking for a bit of general consensus as to (what if any) issues you have had with your luggage?  A colleague of mine with an fj had an incident where it melted part of his saddle bag and as I have Givi mono key luggage with only 2 inch of clearance.  If I was to consider something like a delkevic add on does anyone have any info about clearances or issues of heat damage to luggage?

hi nurse, , no first hand experience with hard luggage, but I used to have throw over ( soft ) panniers on my gsx, took a 3.5 hour ride one weekend to see my dad, , bag had about 2" clearance once loaded, thought it would be ok , but unloaded when I arrived and had a nice shiny melty spot about 3" around on the bag just above the pipe , no stop and go traffic just highway/ awesome road , , had been in traffic I'm sure it would of melted through and lost my clothes  :lol:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

years ago I had similar concerns and put stick on reflective heat shielding (got big sheets from the dirt bike section of the local bike shop) on the bottom of my panniers both soft and hard, made me feel better, tho I suspect it had bugger all effect.

But then again nothing melted. Thinking about it one of my Givi panniers may still have it on it  :bye2:

You can mount just about anything you want.  There are enough strong mounting points on the back to support a lot of weight.  I mounted huge Harley Davidson Softtail bags on my bike with 2 inch strapping using the mount points.  It is strong enough for my wife to stand up one foot on each when fully loaded (the bags, not my wife).  I also built a platform off of that to mount a two-helmet trunk as well.   After my experience, just use your imagination, I have about 2 inches between the bags and the stock exhaust and didnĀ“t have any problems at all during my trip from Mexico to here in Panama.  Depending on how much stuff you like to carry, personally, the more the better and the FJ1200 just keeps pulling it all without a hiccup.

never had any issues with my Hepco becker bags melting or even getting hot.

How timely! After years of riding with 45L Givi side cases on my '92 without incident she had her first "meltdown" last year. See link below for more details on what happened and my first attempt at adding a "heat shield": http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=6238.msg55036#msg55036
Here's what the heat shield looks like after returning from our 4-day ride to Punxsutawney, PA this past weekend:

As you can see, the heat shield is quite literally toast! I believe most of that damage was done riding the last 2 hours on the superslab at around 130 km/h. That being said, the contents of the case were not damaged...this time.
Next Steps: I am going to fab (or get someone else to) an aluminum heat shield that will bolt on to the back side of the Givi wing rack to ensure that the exhaust cannot make direct contact with the side case. Will post the details when I get it installed.

Yours looks like a single side exhaust, is that right?  Do you (or anyone else) think this may exacerbate the issue.  I guess in simple terms you are putting twice the amount of hot gasses out through one location, which could increase the chance of meltage!  But the temp of that gas will be relativly constant wont it? So that temp will be the same wether its one or two exhausts.  I guess the deciding factor will be proximity of exhaust to the luggage?  and then its a case of coming up with some sort of heat shielding that will be up to the job! :scratch_one-s_head:

It's a V&H 4-1 exhaust on my FJ. I believe that this would not be a problem on the stock exhaust because the mufflers are considerably lower. Not sure about other slip-ons, though. When I had my '86 (yes, I rode an ambulance for 11 years, then moved on...) I had the Cobra F1R slip-ons but didn't have the Givi luggage yet so I don't know what impact they would have had. They were pretty short pipes but did point upward so maybe there could have been a problem. That being said, this is my 7th full season with the '92 and the Givi bags and I didn't have a problem until last season. I think part of the reason is that I removed the exhaust system 2 winters ago to get the header pipes powder-coated. When I reinstalled the exhaust system I believe the muffler was pointed a bit more upward than before. The only thing (other than the heat damage) to verify this is that the muffler used to interfere with the rear swing-arm stand unless I positioned it "just-so" and that doesn't seem to be the case any more. Again, the long-term solution will be to fab up a heat shield that goes between the muffler and Givi case with an air gap on either side. I'm going to be riding to Alaska and back next summer (15,000 km) and am hoping I won't need to use a fire extinguisher along the way!

Here's a company that do some cool heat protection stuff over here in the uk. Not only stuff for protecting a surface but also for insulating the source of the heat in particular exhausts
