I hate to have to post this......but Cand is really sick and I am at my wits end !!!!! ....nothing seems to work...... I was 30 kms out on the BBQ ride when I lost power over 4000 rpm's...and turned around and limped back home.....I knew (or at least thought) it was paint flakes in the gas tank....and Carbs....pulled the tank and had it relined.....then the shop cleaned the bottoms only of the carbs.....put her back together and fired her up....ran for about 5 minutes when she started to bellow smoke out the tails...then.....she dropped 2 cylinders....and farted to a dead stop. Took her in to the shop and was told that the Pick ups where pooched. Paul..then sent me his Coils as well as another CDI box. They worked on it for 2 hrs switching sides and parts.....and concluded that the brand new Dynatech ignition coils where cooked....and probably created a chain reaction........ with Pauls pick up coils...only one trigger was firing...I am not sure what he was saying....but I am about to commit Hari Kari......does anyone have any idea what the hell is wrong.....now keep in mind..I am a home builder/carpenter.......so be gentle pleeease... I am fragile right now...

Coils, good or bad, will not harm the ignition pick up sensors.  They do not share any circuitry.

Sounds like you need to isolate whether it is fuel related or ignition related.

Start by confirming if the plugs are sparking.  Also check for corroded connectors.  I've seen more than one FJ lose a coil due to a bad connection somewhere.

Ok.....I just got a reply from the guy whom I bought the pick up coils from......and this is what he thinks

Kevin,

That really stinks. What you need to check is the alternator output, and carefully check the wiring to it. The alternators overheat and drop a leg. They the over heat and melt the plugs together and cause a short and a ton of resistance. The ignition system over taxes and starts breaking down. I'd bet a shiny quarter your alternator plug is melted together.

does this sound likely???

Doesn't make sense to me.  Your alternator wire runs up under the left sidecover and then under the seat.  Look for a 2-wire connector with a red wire and a brown wire. This connector tried to melt on my '85, but I caught it in time and got it cleaned up before it caused any problems.

I recently replaced that connector with 2 bullet connectors for a better connection.  It might be a problem, but it shouldn't be the cause of what your experiencing.

Each coil should pull approx 6 amps (12 volts/2ohms), but the ignition box itself uses hardly any current.  So I don't see the ignition system overtaxing anything.  I think the headlight uses more current than anything.  And this still wouldn't cause the coils to go bad.

Hi David...thx for the inquire.....I opted to grab a brand new compete ignition system....dynatech 2000....and some stock ignition coils.....just waiting for the parts to arrive.........sometimes the process of elimination can be expensive....... :dash1:

Hi David.......hople all is well.....just got a call from the shop and I did not get the news I was hoping for. Put a brand new ignition sytem in her today and still missing 2 pistons...........brand new upper and ignition coils...CDI box and pugs and wires.....my gut is telling me it's still in the Carbs. Tank was removed and relined but the shop told me they only cleaned the bottoms of the carbs not the entire unit. Is it possible that some of the jets are broken or missing.....the pistons all come on after 5000 revs...but under 5 she drops 2 pistons.....now that was what was going on before I sent out for new parts......I'm going to have to take up a collection soon if this goes on much longer....... :flag_of_truce:
