84 FJ; What 17" front wheels will work?

Hello all,

I've been seeing that FZR1000 front wheels work for the later FJ1200's, but what will work on my 84?  I would imagine some of the early GSX-R wheels would work but I haven't a clue where to begin with that, and haven't the time nor inclination to experiment.   I just want to run radials and have a bit less sidewall to contend with up front.   Eventually I'd like to do the rear as well, but I like to burn my bridges one at a time.  Costs less too.   Cheers for any help.

Hello Dennis, welcome amigo! Good to see you have the best FJ...the classic, most beautymus '84!
Unfortunately several things need to happen before you can loose your '84's pig heavy, narrow 16" rim and pig heavy double vented rotors.
What you need to do to run the front 17x3.5" 87/88 FZR rim is to:
1) Replace your lower fork sliders with later model ('89+) FJ lower sliders. If you wish you can reuse your '84's stanchion tubes. Good time to add heavier springs, cartridge emulators new oem seals. eBay is your friend.
Reason: The mounting points for the brake calipers you will need to use on the new single faced 298mm rotors won't work on your existing '84 sliders. Wrong location. '89+ sliders = Right location.
2) Get some YZF R-1 blue spot calipers and a FJR 14mm master cylinder (m/c) Using your existing 5/8" m/c with the blue spots results in a very heavy brake lever, a much better feel with a 14mm m/c.
3) Get some '89+ FJ (298mm) single face rotors.
4) Reuse your existing front fender, axle, spacers and speedo drive.

FYI Here's what it will look like when you are done: http://tinyurl.com/5swvzh

You will be wonderfully surprised at the better stopping and handling this mod will do for your '84.

Cheers and welcome again..

Thanks Frank, coming from the FJ master himself, means a lot.
Since that picture, I've made several other mods to my '84. YZF1000 rear and FZR USD front.
Here's a shot Marsh took at our last WCR, being at night, it's not a clear picture.

Are the blue spot calipers superior to the YZF750 6-pot calipers, which I gather will also bolt on to later sliders?

yes. Power is similar, but the monoblocs (blue dots) are considerably lighter. I tried a set of 6 pots on my YZF600 and a set of "blue dots" on my YZF600 and the 6pots went back to ebay.

Paddy!!   What are you doing!?!   You are going scare away the new guy showing off like that!    :sarcastic:    First the red and silver, then throw in all the bonus shiny bits, he is going to give up before his Modifier's Anonymous card even shows up in mail.

FYI, it looks like your front tire is cupped.   :P   and where is that decal that goes on the chin fairing?   muwhahaha

Thanks, the fan! Useful to know (for the future... ;) ).

Well, mine is definitely not as mint as yours (omfg I wish) but I can't kick too hard; http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/99BWGN7JHMbWjEswCzjiRg?feat=directlink.  I haven't figured out where this forum's photo uploader is yet, so here is a link to the pics of the bike and where I ride/have ridden, starting from today;  http://picasaweb.google.com/brwnsoxx/TheMotorcycleChronicles?feat=directlink
