Dyna ignition coil kit

Hola, amigos

Anybody has fitted and tested a couple of Dyna DC4-1 mini coils? My bike, European model, fits 2,2 ohm coils like these

Hola Alf, I have been told that for FJ's using the stock ignition box, 3 ohm coils (Dyna greens) is what you want to run. For FJ's using the Dyna ignition, 2.2 ohm coils (Dyna greys) is the hot set up.
Therefore, I am unsure that those 2.2 ohm coils will be safe with the stock FJ ignition.
I see that the Dyna literature mentions caution about using low resistance coils.
Others can chime in here...

Snarky Bob mentioned the other day about racers using Dyna red coils which I'm unaware of...

Hola Alf.

I recently purchased a set of dc4-1 coils from ebay.The picture in the ebay ad showed the same mini coils pictured in the ad you posted.What I received was the normal larger sized grey 2.2ohm coils ( I am running the dyna ignition) which  required some minor modification to fit but seem to work well.I suspect the mini coils may have a different part number but am not sure.This website shows different part numbers for the mini coils.

US 88 on models fit 3 ohm OE coils, but European 88 on models fit 2,2 ohm ones, hence the question if anyone have tested the 2.2 ohm mini coils, but I see that DC 4-1 are the normal size coils, not mini

Pat, at the archive I´ve been reading that the Dyna coils are not better than the std ones, is it true?

Thanks Alf, I didn't know that there was a difference in the oem EU vs. US ignitions allowing the 2.2 ohm coils.

Interesting.

I'm still running the stock coils on both bikes, but with the relay mod, so I can't comment on the Dyna's.

In the past, Randy and Bob have expressed the benefits of the stock coils, and they have a lot of experience in this field with the racers they service.

Correct.

The coils have them same values between O.E. and aftermarket. The difference is at the plugs wires. The aftermarket utilizes carbon core automotive style spark plug wires with a connection at each end; coil & plug. The wire ends are then crimped on the soft wire and are a weak connection point. They then use the spark plug wire as the resistance of the secondary ignition circuit.

The stock coil uses a stainless steel solid core secondary wire. The wire, while replaceable at the coil, is sealed and does not have a failure point at the coil base connection as there is a needle that pierces over an 1" into the solid core of the wire. The spark plug boot then screws onto the end of the spark plug wire for another positive connection. The spark plug boot is bake-o-lite and is not susceptible to breakdown due to hear.

If you ensure there is the proper voltage source at the stock coils, you cannot generate any more spark voltage, as long as the coils test within the specifications of the service manual.
